Diplo was born Thomas Wesley Pentz on November 10th, 1978 to Barbara and Thomas Pentz in Mississippi. His family roots are in Germany. From an early age, rap and techno music particularly piqued his interest. When he and his family relocated to Miami, he was exposed to Miami Bass for the first time, a genre that would go on to significantly influence his musical sensibilities. At a period when rock music was mainstream and Rap was only beginning to gain popularity, he felt out of place due to his ‘odd’ musical preferences.
After graduating from UCF, he continued his schooling at Temple University in Philadelphia. He began his career as a DJ at the bars and parties in that area. Although he was a talented musician, he lacked the necessary professional expertise and had to pick up his craft as he went. Thomas Wesley “Diplo” Pentz has established himself as one of the most innovative and gifted musicians in the American music industry. The ‘Major Lazer’ Dancehall music project was created by American record producer, rapper, musician, vocalist, and composer Major Lazer. Together with DJ Skrillex, he formed the electronic powerhouse duo Jack U.
He first gained notoriety with his mash-up mix tapes, and soon he was in demand to play at Philadelphia nightclubs as an electronic dance music expert. His popularity grew among the local clubgoers, and he and his pal DJ Low Budget soon began hosting club nights under the moniker “Hollertronix.” In 2003, they dropped a mix CD named “Never Scared,” which catapulted them to stardom around the world. Despite setbacks, Diplo never stopped pursuing his goals, and in little time at all, he had released his debut solo album, Florida. As a result of his work on “Major Lazer,” he gained massive popularity around the world.
He befriended DJ Low Budget, who had similar tastes to Diplo, and the two eventually formed Hollertronix, a party night where each DJ could play whatever they want. They used their savings to throw themed nights under their brand at California nightclubs. Both their group and individual mixtapes were huge hits in the Philadelphia club scene, with Diplo’s Never Scared being recognized as a top album of 2003.
After establishing himself as a musician and becoming successful financially, Diplo wasted no time in starting his next business venture: a recording studio he called “The Mausoleum,” which was eventually used by artists such as Shakira, Plastic Little, and Scream. While DJing in 2004 on one of his remix songs, Diplo made a good impression on M.I.A., who promptly called him in for a meeting while he was inadvertently playing one of her songs.
Their combined efforts yielded the mixtape “Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1,” which went on to achieve such widespread recognition that it was named by The New York Times as one of the greatest albums of 2011. Eventually, Diplo and M.I.A connected with DJ Switch, and the two of them collaborated on a song called “Paper Planes,” which made it into the top five on the Billboard 200.
All this success was overwhelming for Diplo, and he swiftly rose to the position of producer, working with such notable artists as Shakira, Kid Cudi, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg, and countless more. On his new album, tentatively named Mad Descent, he tried out some Brazilian sounds, drew on his extensive travel experience, and added some new, exciting elements to his music.
Several new artists, including Gucci Mane, Rusko, and Jamie Fanatic, have worked with Mad Decent since the label’s inception in 2005. By working with both new and established musicians, he was soon producing hits for superstars like Lil Wayne, Britney Spears, Usher, Justin Bieber, and Ariana Grande.
Diplo and Switch founded Major Lazer after being signed by Downtown Records to record an album together that drew heavily on Baile Funk and Miami Bass. In 2010, the pair traveled to Jamaica to record their album “Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do,” which was followed by an EP titled “Lazers Never Die.” Major Lazer’s second album, 2013’s “Free the Universe,” followed Switch’s departure.
Through their partnerships with other musicians and high-quality output, the band rose to the position of “best music group in the country.” The follow-up album, 2015’s “Peace is the Mission,” featured the smash hit “Lean On,” which racked up over 800 million streams on Spotify and 2 billion views on YouTube to become one of the most viewed music videos of all time. Other songs from the album also performed exceptionally well.
The 2016 track “Cold Water,” which Major Lazer produced with Justin Bieber and the Spanish artist MO, topped the charts in numerous countries. In the latest album, “Music is the Weapon,” Sia, The Weeknd, and Ty Dolla Sign all had a hand in the production. Diplo has also entered the fray, teaming up with well-known DJ Skrillex to debut as Jack U in 2013. ‘Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack U’ was their first joint effort, which was released in February 2015 and featured a number of other artists. The album’s title track was a number-one hit in numerous countries, and the album itself was a huge hit in clubs all over the world. This team eventually won the 2016 Grammy for Best Dance Album.
Diplo hosts a late-night program on BBC and is a staunch supporter of up-and-coming artists outside of his more well-known work. As a result of his appearances at many benefit concerts, television chat shows, and music festivals, he has developed a cult-like following. He is currently composing the score for “When Harry Met Sejal,” an upcoming Indian film starring Shah Rukh Khan.
