Bio

According to their profile on MTV.com, post-punk pop group Depeche Mode has become “the most successful ‘electro-synth’ band ever” thanks to their innovative use of computer technology in the 1980s. In England, Depeche Mode has been popular almost since the band’s inception in 1981.

But, in the United States, the band only had a sizable cult following before the release of Violator in 1990. Since then, Depeche Mode has enjoyed massive success, with multiple top 40 hits and millions of album sales. The group’s fame continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s thanks to albums like Songs of Faith and Devotion, Ultra, and Exciter.

The members of Depeche Mode identify themselves as “pop musicians,” and they appear to be at home in that genre, which has contributed to the band’s success without requiring any fudge or pretense. Depeche Mode is actually one of the few bands to add legitimacy to the pop genre. Martin Gore, a songwriter, once told Spin magazine that “most pop songs just don’t portray life the way it truly is.” “Not every moment of your life can be filled with joy.

Throughout the course of our career, I’ve worked hard to pen both serious and lighter fare. I’m aware of the fact that we often face accusations of melancholy, but I think you’ll find that our songs also have a sense of will to move on. Even if things are rough, there is always a silver lining.” Most popular bands enjoy the spotlight and actively seek media attention. Depeche Mode members almost never do anything to gain media attention, instead saving their shows for stadiums. This silence in print dates back to the band’s formative years in England.

In 1980, Vince Clarke, who would become the band’s main lyricist, established Depeche Mode outside of London. Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Dave Gahan are three other original members who also hail from the London suburbs. They were drawn to the new generation of music-making machines that rock music had ushered in, such as synthesizers and drum simulators. Gahan stated to Rolling Stone, “We started doing something completely different.” “They were taken as they were readily available and would be useful. You could just grab a synth, tuck it under your arm, and head out to a show. You connected right to the PA system. Since an amplifier wasn’t required, a vehicle wasn’t essential. We frequently rode trains to concerts.”

In time, though, Depeche Mode made inroads into the crucial radio market. The typical rock format radio stations refused to play Depeche Mode because the band had been criticized for being “synth wimps.” New Wave and dance club goers who dug the band’s techno-pop sound and daring lyrics saved them. Former Vice President Al Gore recently told Rolling Stone: “There are many converts to the cause of “genuine” music. We find their view that electronic instruments like synthesizers and samplers are incompatible with soul music to be completely incorrect. We believe that the song itself is what gives the music its soul. What matters is the performance, not the instrumentation.”

The members of Depeche Mode knew early on that their sound would not work well in a live setting. This made them one of the few prominent pop groups to openly use pre-recorded material to enhance their live performances. This has given the band the freedom to be as controversial as any of its contemporaries, which has helped them achieve such phenomenal success. According to New York Times contributor Peter Watrous, “using…tapes to improve a band’s performance is less of willful misrepresentation than of keeping up with the times technologically and giving the audience what they want.”

An audience that comes out for reasons other than listening to music has emerged as a result of the merging of post-punk performance ideas—where improvisation isn’t valued—and consumer-driven images—where people come to share space with a performer.”

After the release of Violator in 1990 and the associated World Violation tour, Depeche Mode finally found popularity in the mainstream. Appreciate the Silence, Policy of Truth, and Personal Jesus helped the album break into the top ten and go multiplatinum in 1991. According to All Music Guide critic Ned Raggett, “Depeche here hit remarkable heights indeed,” describing the album as “Goth without ever being foolishly hammy, synth without sounding like the clinical caricature of synth music,” and “rock without ever sounding like a ‘rock’ band.”

With the success of Violator, the group released Songs of Faith and Devotion in 1993, which also became an instant hit. Although the album’s economic and critical success, its synth-heavy, yet largely guitar-driven tracks were not well received by critics. Christopher John Farley of Time said, “This is a slickly produced, extremely listenable record, yet there is in the end a lack of nerve.”

After the publication of Songs, the band had a four-year break due to various factors, including Wilder’s departure in 1995 to work on his solo project, Recoil, and Gahan’s heroin addiction, attempted suicide, and protracted recovery. Gahan’s vocals were stronger and more under control on the group’s 1997 album Ultra, which yielded the songs “It’s No Good” and “Barrel of a Gun.”

After the publication of the successful singles compilation The Singles 86-98 in 1998, the band went on tour in its support. Mark Bell, who had previously worked with the band on the album Exciter and its lead single “Dream On,” was a familiar face to the band due to his work with the Icelandic pop singer Björk. After the release of Exciter, the band went on a 24-nation global tour that lasted for five months.
