Spain’s David Bisbal is a pop singer, composer, and actor who has won a Grammy. His specialty may be contemporary pop, but his gritty, emotionally rich tenor vocal technique draws equally from rock and dance music as it does from the Spanish flamenco, jota, and zarzuela traditions. Like with all of his subsequent albums, his first, 2002’s Corazón Latino, was an instant success in Spain and has continued to do well there and in the United States.
His album Buleria, released in 2004, was certified diamond in Latin America and sold over a million copies in Spain. It was not until 2009’s Sin Mirar Atrás that he found success in the United States. After spending five weeks at the top of the charts in its native country, it topped the Latin Rhythms Albums chart on Billboard for 10 weeks and eventually went double platinum on the strength of three hit singles. Acustico: Una Noche en el Teatro Real, a live audio-visual album released in 2013, reached number five on the Latin Pop Albums list and earned him a Latin Grammy.
Tu y Yo, another album he published that year, also charted in the top five. He released the platinum-selling T y Yo en Vivo in 2015 after a successful tour around Europe, Spain, and the Americas, and then in 2016 he released Hijos del Mar, which reached the Top 5 in both the Billboard 200 and the Streaming Top 50, and was certified platinum in Spain. Born on June 5th, 1979, in the Spanish city of Almera, David Bisbal Ferre is a member of the Basque ethnic group. Jose Bisbal Sr. was a professional boxer and a passionate flamenco guitarist. He started high school in Almera’s IES Al-Andalus, but left before completing it. The younger Bisbal was unfazed when his father placed him in the position of day worker at a nearby nursery. From the moment he could first communicate, music had been his greatest interest.
Around the age of 10, he was already writing songs, and despite being very timid as a child, he eventually worked with local artists in a wide range of live situations. The producer of the Orchestra Expressions heard him perform with a local band and approached him in 1997. Astonished by Bisbal’s performance, the producer gave him the position of the orchestra’s lead vocalist.
His singing abilities greatly improved. Bisbal left Orchestra Expressions in 2001 after three years to try out for the first season of Operación Triunfo, a reality music competition series filmed in Barcelona. He placed second out of the sixteen competitors, behind winner Rosa Lopez. There was a second round of competition, and the top three competitors all advanced to compete for the chance to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest. Next, he followed López to the tournament in Tallin, Estonia, where he finished in second place and provided verbal support.
Bisbal became a household name because to Operacion Triunfo, even though he came in second place. His first proper solo album, Corazón Latino, was out in 2002 on the Universal subsidiary label Vale Music. Corazón Latino, produced and written in large part by Latin pop hitmaker Kike Santander, not only topped the Spanish albums chart, but also sold over two million copies globally thanks to a trio of chart-topping singles. In addition, “Lloraré las Penas” helped make the album a minor hit in the United States. In 2003, Bisbal won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, one of several accolades for which he was nominated after the success of his first album.
Without Mirar Atras was released in 2009, and for the first time, Kike Santander was not credited with any composition on the album. A deluxe version of the album included a duet with English singer Pixie Lott called “Sufrirás,” however the switch did not appear to impact the conclusion, since Sin Mirar Atrás dominated the Spanish charts.
Bisbal’s third live album, Acstico: Una Noche en el Teatro Real, was released in 2011, and he followed it up with another concert CD, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, in 2013. Bisbal’s fifth studio album was recorded starting in 2013. The finished product, titled T y Yo, was unveiled in March of 2014. The album topped the Spanish album charts for five consecutive weeks and performed well in other European countries. The song “Diez Mil Maneras” also achieved chart-topping success in Spain.
In 2016, Bisbal combined his extensive philanthropic activity with his singing career by releasing Hijos del Mar, an album whose lead track “Antes Que No” addressed the plight of children who had been forced to flee their homes and was released in support of UNICEF in Spain. The album debuted at number one in Spain and went on to earn a platinum certification. The album hit number four on Billboard’s Latin Albums chart and number one on various streaming services’ most played lists.
Throughout the following three years, Bisbal released a succession of singles, compilations, and videos while he toured and worked for various philanthropic organisations. Both “Perdon” (with Greeicy) and “If T’ La Quieres” (featuring Aitana) were released as singles. Bisbal’s 17-song LP En Tus Planes came out in early 2020. In addition to the aforementioned hits, he has also produced a number of bilingual duets, including “Tears of Gold” with Carrie Underwood and the bi-lingual “A Partir de Hoy” with Sebastián Yatra and Alejandro Fernandez. In Spain, where it was released, the album went straight to the top of the streaming charts and was eventually certified platinum.
