Educated at Wyggeston Grammar School in Leicester and Clare College in Cambridge, where he earned an honors degree in Natural Sciences, Sir David Attenborough was born in London in May of 1926. After serving for two years as part of the National Service, he worked in the editorial department at the University of London Press.
Sir David has been a broadcaster for nearly 50 years. It all started for him in 1952, when he joined BBC Television as a trainee and ultimately became a producer at the historic Alexandra Palace studios in north London. The live studio shows he produced ranged from those geared toward children and the kitchen to religious and political broadcasts, ballet, and archaeological quiz shows. After ten years of producing such shows, he left to pursue doctoral studies in social anthropology, but the BBC welcomed him back in 1965 to serve as the network’s second controller when BBC2 was only a year old. He was promoted to Director of Programmes, overseeing both of the BBC’s television networks, after four years during which the network established itself and became the first in Europe to transmit in color.
Sir David left in 1973 to return to his programming roots. First, there was the Southeast Asia-focused Eastwards with Attenborough, and then there was The Tribal Eye, which explored the world of tribal art through the lens of sculpture, weaving, and metal casting. It was also during this time that he began his long run as the voice of Wildlife On One.
His first big series, Life on Earth, was published and delivered by him in 1979. The history of animal life as we know it was chronicled here. It was the most ambitious series the BBC Natural History Unit had ever attempted, with 13 episodes each running for 50 minutes. It received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, was nominated for numerous prizes, and went on a world tour.
The Living Planet, a 12-part series that surveyed the natural world from an ecological perspective, was a fitting sequel to Life on Earth, and in 1990, he finished the third and last installment of the Life trilogy, The Trials of Life, which focused on animal behavior. The First Eden, a review of human impact on the regions around the Mediterranean, Lost Worlds, Vanished Lives, a series about fossils, and Life in the Freezer, a documentary about Antarctic species, were all presented by him in addition to these larger series.
The Private Life of Plants, The Life of Birds, The Life of Mammals, a survey of terrestrial invertebrates entitled “Life in the Undergrowth,” and “Life in Cold Blood,” which dealt with amphibians and reptiles, are just some of the series he has made that cover particular areas of the natural world in depth. There was a book to go along with each of these main series. The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, and The Frozen Planet were all series he narrated as well.
Sir David has been honored with numerous honors and accolades during his career, beginning with a knighthood in 1985 for his contributions to the world of broadcasting. Our Planet, narrated by David Attenborough and produced by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for Netflix, will premiere this year. The series was made by Silverback Films, the same company responsible for the groundbreaking Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, and The Blue Planet series for the BBC, in association with the World Wildlife Fund.
Sir David Attenborough released David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet, a feature-length documentary co-produced with WWF, in the fall of 2020. Attenborough has spent his 96 years traveling the world and filming the incredible diversity of life. For the first time, he considered not just the seminal events of his life as a naturalist, but also the profound shifts he has witnessed. As Attenborough’s declaration as a witness to the natural world, the documentary is forthright, illuminating, and urgent. An inspiring message of optimism for future generations is delivered alongside a compelling first-person depiction of humanity’s impact on the environment. Multiple Emmys and the coveted Grierson Documentary Award have been given to Silverback Films and WWF for their work on the film.
Sir David has been President of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation and a trustee at the British Museum, the Science Museum, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He is a widower with an anthropological son and an educational consultant daughter. Music, tribal art, modern pottery, and natural history are some of his favorite pastimes.
After his time in the Navy was up, he found work as a children’s book editor. In 1950, however, he submitted a job application to the BBC. He was turned down at first, but the BBC kept his resume on file, and a few months later he was offered a three-month training program to become a broadcaster. He worked hard and was promoted rapidly in the fledgling BBC TV service. Soon after, he became linked to numerous nature-focused shows like “The Pattern of Animals” and “Zoo Quest,” and was put in control of all non-fiction airings.
He is the patron of the World Land Trust, an organization that purchases rainforests and other areas with the intention of preserving them and the creatures that live there, and has received honorary degrees from several colleges across the world.
