Cori “Coco” Gauff (born March 13, 2004) is a tennis player from the United States. She is the WTA’s youngest player in the top 100, with a career-high ranking of world No. 19 in singles and No. 25 in doubles attained on September 13, 2021. Gauff won her maiden WTA singles victory at the 2019 Linz Open at the age of 15, becoming her the WTA Tour’s youngest singles champion since 2004. She and Caty McNally won three WTA doubles titles. Her father was a track and field player at Florida State University and subsequently worked as a teacher, while her mother was a track and field athlete at Georgia State University and later worked as a health care executive. Her father had limited tennis experience as a kid. Gauff began training at the Mouratoglou Academy in France at the age of ten, under Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams’ longtime coach. Mouratoglou added, “The first moment I saw Coco will stay with me forever. She came to the Mouratoglou Academy to try out in 2014, and I was amazed by her determination, athleticism, and fighting spirit… You can only believe it when she looks at you and tells you she’ll be number one.” Gauff was sponsored by his Champ’Seed foundation, which he established to provide support for talented juniors who lacked the financial means to attend high-level training.Gauff continued to enjoy success, winning the USTA Clay Court National 12-and-under title at the age of ten years and three months to become the tournament’s youngest champion ever.
Gauff was previously ranked No. 1 in the world as a junior.At the age of 12, she competed in the prestigious Les Petits As 14-and-under event and advanced to the semifinals.
Gauff started playing on the ITF Junior Circuit at the age of 13 and quickly advanced to Grade A and Grade 1 competitions. She didn’t lose a set until the final, when she came back from a set down to beat McNally in three. Gauff became the fifth-youngest girls’ singles champion in French Open history with the victory. She became the world’s No. 1 junior a month later after winning another final against McNally at the Grade 1 Junior International Roehampton.
At the year’s final two Grand Slam tournaments, Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals in singles. At both competitions, she did better in doubles, reaching the semifinals with partner Mara Lourdes Carlé at Wimbledon and winning her maiden junior Grand Slam doubles title with McNally at the US Open. In the final, Gauff and McNally defeated compatriots Hailey Baptiste and Dalayna Hewitt in straight sets. Gauff competed in the Junior Fed Cup with Alexa Noel and Connie Ma in September. Against Ukraine, the team advanced to the final. Gauff and Noel won the Junior Fed Cup by defeating Lyubov Kostenko and Dasha Lopatetskaya 11–9 in a match tiebreak. Gauff concluded the year in the Orange Bowl with another Grade A singles title. She finished the season ranked second in the world, behind Clara Burel.
