Clint Hurdle Bio

Former Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder and manager Clinton Merrick Hurdle was born in the United States on July 30, 1957. He is a former player and manager in the MLB. In addition to managing the Colorado Rockies and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Hurdle represented the Kansas City Royals, the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets, and the St. Louis Cardinals during his playing career.

Hurdle participated in 515 games at the significant league level throughout his career, earning the title “phenom” from Sports Illustrated at age twenty. Following his retirement from the game of baseball, Hurdle went on to become a manager. During his eight seasons with the Rockies, he was the one who led the team to the franchise’s first National League (NL) pennant in 2007.

On November 14, 2010, the Pirates decided to employ him as their manager. Under Hurdle’s leadership, they had their first winning season and berth in the playoffs since 1992. During that season, he emerged victorious as the National League Manager of the Year. His father, Clinton Hurdle, was a baseball player at Ferris State University, and Clint Hurdle was named after his father.

When Hurdle was four years old, his family relocated from Michigan to Florida so that his father could begin working at the Kennedy Space Center. This required the family to relocate. A member of the Cocoa Astros of the Florida State League, Hurdle served as a bat boy when he was a young youth. The Merritt Island High School, located on Merritt Island, Florida, is where Hurdle received his diploma.

He was admitted to Harvard University and obtained a scholarship to play college baseball and football as a quarterback. However, he chose to play professional baseball instead of attending Harvard University. He was offered a scholarship to play college football and college baseball. During the 1975 Major League Baseball draft, the Kansas City Royals picked Hurdle with the ninth overall pick in the first round. This was the Kansas City Royals’ selection.

The Royals offered him a signing bonus of fifty thousand dollars in exchange for his services. 1977 was the year that he made his debut in the big leagues with the Royals. In 1978, he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on March 20 with the banner “This Year’s Phenom.”
Through 1981, Hurdle was a member of the Royals, but he was never able to reach the level of play indicative of his high selection position.

1980 was Hurdle’s most incredible year, as he started 109 regular season games in right field for the Royals, who won the American League pennant. Additionally, Hurdle faced the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1980 World Series and started in right field for four of the games. It was in December of 1981 that he was dealt to the Cincinnati Reds. After spending the whole year of 1982 with the Reds, he was placed on waivers.

His signing with the Seattle Mariners occurred in February 1983, although the team dismissed him later. The New York Mets signed him in April 1983, and he played for their Triple-A club, the Tidewater Tides, for most of the season. The Tides established a new franchise high for runs batted in with 105 during the 1983 season, which Hurdle accomplished. Additionally, he featured in thirteen games with the Mets.

Once again, he was a member of the Tidewater Tides in 1984. During the 1985 season, he participated in 43 games with the Mets, and during the 1986 season, he represented the St. Louis Cardinals in 78 games. Throughout his baseball career, Hurdle played in 97 games for the Tidewater Tides and three games with the Mets before calling it quits in 1987, when he was 29. During his career, he played a variety of positions, including right field, first base, third base, catcher, and designated hitter, with his other positions.

Furthermore, Hurdle participated in three distinct winter ball seasons with Tiburones de La Guaira, a team that competed in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League competition. He led the league in home runs (18) during his rookie season, 1977–1978. He also had a batting average of.305 and 52 runs batted in. He participated in the game in 1979–1980 and 1983–1984. During each of the three seasons he played in Venezuela, he led the league in walks.

In 1994, he became a member of the Colorado Rockies organization and began working as a hitting instructor for the minor leagues. He continued in this role until 1997, when he was promoted to hitting coach for the Rockies. Following Buddy Bell’s dismissal at the beginning of the 2002 season, Hurdle was advanced to the position of Manager. He received a contract extension for two years on April 2, 2006.

The Colorado Rockies won 13 of their last 14 games to force a tie-breaker game with the San Diego Padres to decide who would win the National League Wild Card. In 2007, Hurdle coached the club to a record of 90-73, which was the most incredible finish in the franchise’s 15-year history. As a result of Colorado’s victory against San Diego, the Rockies made it to the postseason for the first time.

After that, Hurdle’s Rockies were victorious over the Philadelphia Phillies in the Division Series, triumphing over them in three games to force a matchup with their rival Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series. After sweeping Arizona in four games, the Rockies maintained their incredible success, which allowed them to capture the first pennant in the franchise’s history and go to the World Series in 2007.

A matchup between Colorado and the Boston Red Sox occurred in the World Series. However, the Rockies’ streak of victories ended, as they won all four games in a row. As a result of injuries sustained by several regulars, the Rockies declined in 2008, and on May 29, 2009, Hurdle was terminated from his position as manager.
