He was born on September 13, 1959, in the United States. His work on Dateline NBC, in particular the program titled “To Catch a Predator,” which focused on the use of covert operations in order to catch potential sexual offenders online, is largely responsible for the prominence that he currently enjoys. In addition to that, he is the host of the documentary series Killer Instinct, which airs on Investigation Discovery and is centered around murder investigations. In September 2016, he was chosen to replace the previous host of the nationally syndicated show Crime Watch Daily for the show’s forthcoming second season. He will be in charge of hosting the show.
On September 13, 1959, Hansen was born in the city of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. He grew up in West Bloomfield Township and Birmingham, which are both located in the state of Michigan. Hansen mentioned in an interview he gave to City Pulse that he was 14 years old when he had the realization that he wanted to have a career in journalism. At the time, he was keeping up with the inquiry into the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa that was being carried out by the police and the FBI. Specifically, he was observing and following the investigation. Brother Rice High School, which is found in the city of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, was where he completed his secondary schooling.
Hansen attended Michigan State University for a total of four years to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunication. He obtained his degree in 1981 after completing his studies there. In 1981, when Hansen was a senior at Michigan State University, he began working as a reporter for WILX, the local affiliate of NBC in the city of Lansing, Michigan. After that, he started working as a reporter for WFLA in Tampa, Florida, as well as for a number of newspapers and radio stations around the state of Michigan, including WXYZ in Detroit.
In addition, he covered stories for a number of radio stations in Michigan. In 1988, he was awarded a position at WDIV in Detroit, where he served as both an investigative reporter and an anchor. This was the beginning of his career in the television industry. Hansen became a correspondent for the news show Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric in May of 1993 after joining NBC News in that capacity at that time.
The television show was only broadcast for a short period of time. Notable examples of the work that Hansen has produced for Dateline include investigative reports on Indian child slave labor and counterfeit prescription drug sales in China, as well as coverage of the Columbine High School shooting, the bombing of Oklahoma City, the Unabomber, and the crash of TWA Flight 800. Hansen was responsible for most of Dateline’s coverage of the events that occurred on September 11 as well as the reports that Dateline aired on terrorist organizations and the activities of Al-Qaeda. In addition, Hansen was responsible for the majority of Dateline’s coverage of the events that transpired on September 11.
In addition, he disclosed that a group with ties to Osama bin Laden had planned to purchase missiles and components for nuclear weapons, and he also participated in the compilation of an exclusive report detailing the hijacking of Air France Flight 8969. Both of these revelations were made by him. As a direct result of his series of articles criticizing the lack of security at airports, the Federal Aviation Administration opened an investigation, which ultimately led to the organization revising its policies. [During Hansen’s first marriage, he was married to Mary Joan, and the couple went on to have two children together.
After what was estimated to be close to 30 years of marriage at the time, Mary Joan reportedly submitted her petition for divorce in June of 2018. The family always considered Stamford, which is in the state of Connecticut, to be their permanent home. In addition, Hansen owned a flat in New York City; however, in January 2019, it was reported that he had been evicted from the property because he had not paid the rent for the flat since August of the previous year. The reason for his eviction was the fact that Hansen had not paid the rent for the flat since August of the previous year.
His mother, Patricia Hansen, passed away on March 1st, 2020. The date of her passing was March 1st, 2020. On November 13, 2021, Hanson and Gabrielle Gagnon tied the knot and began their lives together as husband and wife. Hansen was charged with theft after a check that he had written to a vendor that offered promotional materials was returned to him in January 2019 as unpaid. The check had been made to the vendor for promotional products.
Hansen allegedly wrote bogus checks to pay for over $13,000 worth of advertising materials, as stated by the Stamford Police Department. On January 14, 2019, Hansen turned himself into the authorities in Stamford, Connecticut, in order to face charges related to this alleged offense. The charges were eventually dismissed after some time had passed. Hansen was scheduled to make an appearance and present evidence in connection with an undercover operation that took place in October 2020 in a courtroom that was located in Shiawassee County, which is located in the state of Michigan. The hearing was scheduled to take place in July 2021. However, Hansen did not show up in court as was anticipated.
In the month of July 2021, a warrant was issued for his arrest as a result of an investigation. Later on, Hansen turned himself into the authorities and explained that he skipped court owing to a misunderstanding that was in the process of being cleared up at the time that he turned himself in. This clarification was taking place at the time that Hansen turned himself in. In addition to receiving awards for excellence from the Associated Press and United Press International, Hansen has been honored with eight Emmys, four Edward R. Murrow Awards, three Clarion Awards, the Overseas Press Club Award, an IRE, the National Press Club Award, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Award. All of these accolades are in addition to the awards for excellence that he has received from the Associated Press and United Press International.
