Charles Wade Barkley is a well-known name in the world of professional basketball, and he is presently working as a presenter for the television program “Inside the NBA.” Barkley played basketball at the highest level. Barkley is widely regarded as one of the most formidable players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played professionally for a total of 16 years, during which time he was a member of three different NBA teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, the Phoenix Suns, and the Houston Rockets.
When Barkley was a kid, he first became interested in basketball, and he continued to play all the way until his senior year in high school. Even though he had a solid track record, college scouts did not show much interest in him until the state high school semi-finals. It was then that his performance finally led to his being recruited by Auburn University. Barkley participated in collegiate football for a total of three years before making himself eligible for selection in the 1984 NBA Draft.
Throughout the course of his tremendously successful career, he was selected for inclusion on the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team five times, and the All-NBA Third Team one time. He was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1993. He participated in the national team that won three gold medals overall, including two gold medals at the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996 and one gold medal in the FIBA Americas Championship in 1992. He took his retirement in the year 2000, and ever since then he has had a lot of success working as an NBA commentator.
The 20th of February, 1963, Charles Barkley was welcomed into the world in Leeds, Alabama, by his parents, Charcey Glenn, and Frank Barkley. John Glenn Barkley and Darryl Barkley are his brothers’ names; he has two of them. His environment significantly impacted him as a youngster, and as a result, he became interested in basketball just as any other young person would. Soon enough, he started to show signs of living up to his potential.
He went to Leeds High School for his secondary education. As a junior, he was not selected for the varsity squad and was instead placed on the reserve roster, in part due to the fact that he was taller than the other players (he stood at five ft. 10 in and weighed 220 pounds). However, throughout the course of his senior year, he had a growth spurt that caused him to gain a total of six inches, and he was promoted to a starting position on the varsity squad.
As a senior, he led his team to the state semifinals on the strength of an average of 19.1 points and 17.9 rebounds scored and grabbed per game. In spite of the significant progress he had made, no scout showed interest in him at any point throughout the season. This shifted when he competed against Butler High School’s Bobby Lee Hurt in the state high school semi-finals and scored 26 points against him.
At the game was Sonny Smith, the head coach of Auburn University, and one of his assistant coaches, who both worked there. After being profoundly impressed with Barkley, he reported back to his colleagues that Barkley was “a huge man… who can play like the wind.”
Charles Barkley did not participate in any games for Auburn during his final year. Instead, he decided to put himself up for selection in the NBA draft of 1984. In the end, the Philadelphia 76ers selected him as the fifth player taken in the first round of the draft. During that season, the majority of the players on the 76ers roster were veterans. Despite the fact that they had won the World Series in 1983, their performance throughout the 1983-1984 season was not very impressive.
Barkley and Moses Malone, a renowned basketball player who won the Most Valuable Player award three times, had a connection that was nearly like that of a protégé and a mentor. Malone assisted him with his weight problems and instructed him on how to properly prepare for a game as well as how to train oneself.
Barkley participated in 82 games during his first year as a member of a professional basketball team. Of those 82 games, he started 60 of them and averaged 14.0 points scored per contest. Barkley participated in a total of 13 games during the playoffs, two of which he started, and averaged 14.9 points in scoring for the 76ers, who advanced to the postseason.
Charles Barkley is now a well-respected pundit and analyst, and he is one of the crew members of ‘Inside the NBA.’ Since his retirement, Barkley has been in the broadcasting business. He is now a member of the expert panel for pre-game and halftime programs on the Turner Network Television (TNT), where he previously worked. In addition to it, he participates in special NBA events. In May of 2017, he was given the hosting gig for TNT’s ‘American Race.’
Even though Barkley had been publicly identifying himself as a Republican for a number of years, in 2014, he disclosed on Monday Night Football that he really identifies as an Independent. He voted for Barack Obama for president in the election that took place in 2008. He is an outspoken advocate for the rights of LGBT people. In October of 2008, he disclosed to the press that he intended to make a bid for the governorship of Alabama in 2014; however, he ultimately chose not to do so in 2010.
