Chance the Rapper’s Bio

Chance the Rapper was born on April 16, 1993, in West Chatham, Chicago. His dad used to work for the previous mayor and senator of Chicago and is now the deputy chief of staff for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Taylor Bennett, Bennett’s younger brother, is also a rapper.

Bennett attended a high school called “Jones College Prep.”  Rapper Chance the Rapper, whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, is a popular American hip-hop musician. Bennett, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, always loved to sing. His father pushed for him to get a “white collar” job, but he was set on a career in music. Bennett and his pal started their own hip-hop combo.

Bennett was already a fan of soul and jazz when Kanye West’s The College Dropout piqued his interest in hip-hop. Bennett dropped out of school to pursue music full-time. Although he had already published a mixtape and a few tracks, his career didn’t take off until the release of his second mixtape, titled “Acid Rap.” Bennett’s third mixtape, “Coloring Book,” took his career to new heights and was nominated for three Grammys. It also made history as the first album released only for streaming to be nominated for a Grammy. Bennett has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, both solo and in groups. He worked with the lead singer of the band “The Social Experiment” to create the hit album “Surf.”

Bennett’s love of music persisted even after he was mocked by his professors. Instead, he went for his goals head-on and, in early 2011, released his debut mixtape, titled “10 Day.” At the year’s close, he dropped a single titled “Windows.” Bennett’s mixtape, which he released in April 2012, was met with rave reviews. Both listeners and critics praised the mixtape’s quality. Around half a million copies have been downloaded from ‘Datpiff’ since its initial release. The compilation tape was highlighted in the “Cheap Tunes” section of “Forbes” magazine.

The mixtape was downloaded over 1.5 million times and received high marks from both music critics and fans. Even at the 2013 “BET Hip Hop Awards,” it was nominated for “Best Mixtape.”

Acid Rap entered the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at position #63. It reached number 26 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “50 Greatest Albums of 2013” as well. According to “Complex,” it is the fourth best.

For the ‘Songs from Scratch’ series, he dropped the track ‘Paranoia’ in May of 2013. Then, on December 10, 2013, he appeared on Childish Gambino’s album, Because of the Internet. Bennett’s modeling career began in March 2014, when he was already well-known for his musical talents. He promoted Dockers’ spring collection in a shoppable internet video. Bennett’s short film “Mr. Happy” premiered in 2015. It follows the protagonist “Victor,” played by Colin Tilley, who is depressed and contemplating suicide until he meets “Mr. Happy.”

Bennett’s album Surf was published exclusively on the U.S. iTunes store in May 2015. The record received glowing reviews from industry insiders. Soon after, he gave a super jam musical performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. During this same period, he also made a guest appearance with the legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire, performing alongside fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Bennett and Lil B worked together to create a mixtape titled “Free Based Freestyles Mixtape” which was published in August of 2015. Then he released a music video for his latest single, “Family Matters.” This song was a cover of “Family Business” by Kanye West, first released on his 2004 album “The College Dropout.” Bennett debuted a brand new song titled “Angels” on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on October 27, 2015. In the latter part of the year, he debuted a new song called “Somewhere in Paradise” on “Saturday Night Live.”

Bennett contributed to and is featured on “Ultralight Beam,” a song by Kanye West from 2016’s “The Life of Pablo.” He also wrote “Father Extend My Hands Part. 1,” “Famous,” “Feedback,” and “Waves” for the album. After working with West, he was featured on “Need To Know” by hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s album “This Unruly Mess I’ve Created.” Afterward, he was heard on Skrillex’s “Show Me Love” remix, which included Hundred Waters. For the “Nike” ad “Unlimited Together,” Bennett created the track “We the People.” He also appeared in a commercial for Nestlé Kit Kat.

His “Magnificent Coloring World Tour” kicked off in San Diego back in September 2016.   In February 2017, he took the stage at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. His rendition of “Last Christmas” on “Saturday Night Live” later that year earned him an “Emmy Award” nomination.

Bennett was the featured performer on the third day of the 2017 “Lollapalooza” music festival. He made an appearance on Saba’s track “Logout” from the album “Care for Me” the following year. Cardi B’s debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” features him on the song “Best Life.”

Two new singles, “My Own Thing” and “The Man Who Has Everything,” were released in November 2018 in anticipation of his forthcoming debut studio album. His voice can also be heard in Ed Sheeran’s “Cross Me.” In 2013, Chance the Rapper began dating Kirsten. In September 2015, the couple became parents for the first time to a little girl they called Kensli.

In 2016, after an argument, the couple decided to discontinue sharing living quarters. The two were able to make up, and they got married on March 9, 2019. The couple’s second daughter, Marli, is due in September 2019. Bennett is a committed Christian, and his music frequently features references to the Savior. Bennett is quite vocal about the #SaveChicago movement. The campaign’s goal is to reduce or eliminate acts of cruelty and gun violence.

In addition, he met with then-President Obama to talk about the “My Brother’s Keeper Challenge,” a program launched by the federal government to get community leaders involved in the lives of black and brown boys and men in order to help them overcome obstacles and advance racial equality. Chance’s cousin gave him access to his recording studio when he was in the sixth grade. Along with a pal, he started a hip-hop duet. In Chicago’s Harold Washington Library, at a venue called the “YOUmedia Lyricist Loft,” the pair first performed together. Chance spent his last two years of junior high school and part of his senior year crafting the first version of his debut album, “10 Day.”
