Barbara Mandrell Bio

Barbara Mandrell is an American country music singer and actress who rose to prominence throughout the 1970s and 1980s as one of the most popular country performers of the era. Through those two illustrious decades, she amassed an impressive collection of top-ten singles and received several prizes, including the Country Music Association’s prestigious ‘Entertainer of the Year’ award twice as well as its award for a best female vocalist on two separate occasions. The songs ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right, “Years,” “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” “Till You’re Gone,” and “One of a Kind Pair of Fools” are among her most well-known.

She began her career in the music business at a young age, having grown up as the daughter of artists. Her father, who had supported her to pursue her dreams, was in charge of her professional life for a number of years. Her abilities were not confined to singing, as she was also a talented actor who appeared in a number of television programs and series, many of which were praised for their quality. After quitting her musical career in the late 1990s, she focused solely on her acting career, appearing in a number of successful television dramas such as ‘Sunset Beach’ and ‘Touched by an Angel’ until announcing her total retirement from the entertainment world in 2006.

Irby Matthew Mandrell, a World War II navy veteran who subsequently became a Texas police officer, and his wife, Mary Ellen, were married on December 25, 1948, in Houston, Texas, and had a daughter, Barbara Ann Mandrell, on December 25, 1948. Her father, who was also a successful singer, finally took on the role of manager for her. Two of Barbara’s younger sisters, Thelma Louise Mandrell and Ellen Irlene Mandrell, are also well-known country music vocalists in their own right.

She began studying music at a very young age and even taught herself how to play the steel guitar at one point. She also learned to play other instruments, such as the accordion, saxophone, and banjo, during her time in the military. When she was thirteen years old, she went on tour with Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and George Jones. After her two sisters showed an interest in music as well, her family decided to form their own musical group. In later years, Ken Dudney joined the band as their drummer, and Barbara would later marry him as well.

Following the formation of the ‘Mandrell Family Band,’ Dudney was summoned to serve in the United States Navy. Around this time, Barbara Mandrell made the decision to seek a career as a country singer, and she relocated to Nashville to further her endeavors. Her father then took over the management of her work. She began her career with a few small singles under the direction of producer Billy Sherrill, who had previously worked with renowned performers like Charlie Rich, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker, among others.

In 1969, she had six offers from several recording labels, and she ultimately signed with Columbia Records the following year. It was a rendition of Otis Redding’s classic “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” that became her first chart-topping single, and it was an immediate smash. A year later, she had a top 40 success with ‘Playin’ Around With Love,’ and she went on to collaborate with vocalist David Houston on a number of other great songs. Barbara’s tenure with Columbia Records was not very productive, and Billy Sherrill was often questioned about why he was continuing to work with her despite the fact that she had failed to achieve broad acclaim. In 1975, he was finally able to get out of his contract with her.

After leaving Columbia Records, Barbara Mandrell joined with ABC/Dot, where she began working with producer Tom Collins on new projects. This cooperation marked the beginning of her career as a successful entrepreneur. She debuted in the top 5 with her song ‘Standing Room Only,’ and then went on to get the number one hit in the country with ‘Sleeping Single in a Double Bed,’ which came out in 1978. This was quickly followed by the track ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right,’ which likewise peaked at the top of the charts and became a hit.

With a string of hit singles, beginning with ‘Crackers’ and “Wish You Were Here,” she had the most successful period of her career, reaching the top 10 of the country’s singles chart on many occasions. During the early 1980s, she also produced several mega-hit songs, including ‘Years,’ ‘I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,’ ‘Till You’re Gone,’ and ‘One of a Kind, Pair of Fools,’ all of which were instant classics. She swiftly established herself as a major force in the business. Of these top successes, the track ‘I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,’ which she sang with George Jones, quickly became a fan favorite among the public.

Upon joining forces with Lee Greenwood in 1984, she had tremendous success. A number of hit duets from their album ‘Meant for Each Other’ reached the top of the country music charts. Barbara Mandrell’s burgeoning success throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s led to her deciding to branch out into the world of television. The first episode of the television show ‘Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters’ aired on NBC in 1980. Afterward, she appeared in a number of famous television programs, including ‘Empty Nest,’ ‘Diagnosis: Murder,’ ‘Dr. Quinn,’ ‘Medicine Woman,’ ‘Touched By An Angel,’ ‘The Commish,’ and ‘Baywatch,’ among others.

As soon as she announced her retirement from the singing business in 1997, she focused solely on her acting career for the next two years, appearing in television episodes and movies such as ‘Love Boat: The Next Wave,’ ‘The Wrong Girl,’ “Stolen from the Heart,” and “Walker, Texas Ranger.” Barbara Mandrell’s hallmark song is ‘I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,’ which is a song she wrote when country music wasn’t cool. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in the United States and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2008.

In 1984, she collaborated with Bobby Jones on one of her best-known duets, ‘I’m So Glad We’re Standing Here Today,’ which remains one of her best-known songs. This gospel duet earned them a Grammy Award in the category of ‘Best Soul Gospel Duo Performance’ for their work together on the song. This song went on to become one of the most popular gospel songs of all time, propelling her already successful career to higher heights.

Barbara Mandrell is one of the most lauded musicians in the history of American country music, having received several awards and honors. She received Academy of Country Music Awards in a variety of categories in the years 1971, 1978, 1980, 1981, 2001, and 2005, among other years. For “He Set My Life to Music,” she received a Grammy Award in 1983, and for “I’m So Glad We’re Standing Here Today,” she received a Grammy Award in 1984 for “I’m So Glad We’re Standing Here Today” (with Bobby Jones), which she received in 1983.

Mandrell was inducted into the Country-Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009, the Artists Music Guild in 2012, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014. He has also received honors from the Country-Gospel Music Foundation. When Barbara Mandrell tied the knot with musician Ken Dudney on May 28, 1967, she gave birth to three children: Kenneth Matthew Dudney, Jaime Nicole Dudney, and Nathaniel Mandell Dudney, all of whom are still alive.

Barbara, along with her two children, Matthew and Jaime, were engaged in a horrible vehicle accident at the peak of their professional careers. Due to the fact that they were not wearing seatbelts, all three of them sustained serious injuries in the accident. In addition to the fractures, she reportedly experienced a concussion, temporary memory loss, and speech issues. Since then, she has been an outspoken proponent of the use of seatbelts.
