One of the few everlasting beauties that Hollywood has ever created, Barbara Eden is a star in her own right. Eden has managed to maintain her following while working in a profession where many bright individuals and gorgeous faces have been lost over the years. In the United States, Barbara became well-known for her part as a ‘Jeannie’ in the popular American comedy ‘I Dream of Jeannie,’ in which she appeared in about a dozen failed films before landing the role. Despite the fact that the comedy has been on the air for more than 50 years, many people still remember it. This function also opened the door to a slew of job opportunities.
Moreover, Barbara has been one of the busiest actresses in the history of the industry. Barbara has featured in around 21 films and contributed to more than 50 television episodes during the course of her more than a five-decade-long career. As a result, Eden has been connected with all of the major Hollywood production companies, including ‘Twentieth Century Fox,’ ‘Columbia Pictures,” and “Tristar.” Many of her works have been produced by these studios.
Throughout her career, Barbara has made several cameo appearances on television, as well as in advertisements, which she continues to do to this day. A couple of songs from one of Eden’s films were recorded with her voice on them, demonstrating that she is a talented vocalist. Barbara Eden was born on August 23, 1931, in Tucson, Arizona, to Alice Mary and Hubert Henry Morehead. She was the youngest of three children. Barbara Jean Morehead was her given name at the time of her birth. Eden was three years old at the time of her parent’s separation.
She eventually relocated with her mother to San Francisco, where she spent most of her childhood. The Great Depression caused Barbara to grow up in a low-income environment since her family could not afford many pleasures due to economic hardship. Barbara’s mother used to amuse her by singing songs, which subsequently served as a motivation for her to pursue a career as an actress in movies. Eden received her high school diploma from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1949. Eden had been a member of the cheerleading squad throughout her high school years.
During her adolescent years, she also performed as a pop singer. Barbara, in contrast to most other performers, who get swept away by the glitter of film and a few inspiring sequences, enrolled in acting school because she believed it would help her better her singing abilities. Barbara attended City College of San Francisco for a year, where she received her training in theatre. When she was a teenager in the early 1950s, she competed in two beauty pageants, winning one of them and being named ‘Miss San Francisco’ in another.
Barbara’s first acting job came in the shape of the 1956 film ‘Back From Eternity,’ which she appeared in. She had taken on the part of a blonde college student in a ‘blink and miss’ fashion. In 1957, she landed a part in the television series ‘How to Marry a Millionaire,’ which was a television version of the film of the same name that she had previously seen. Through the late 1950s and early 1960s, Barbara had guest appearances on famous television series such as “I Love Lucy,” “Perry Mason,” “Gunsmoke,” and “Route 66,” among others, as well as a slew of smaller forgettable parts.
Barbara had screen time with the iconic musician Elvis Presley in the 1960 film ‘Flamingo Star,’ in which she appeared alongside the legendary singer. Eden portrayed the role of Presley’s love interest in the film. In 1982, Barbara’s life was radically transformed when she was asked by famed writer Sidney Sheldon to appear in his comedy ‘I Dream of Jeannie.’ This television series, which aired for five seasons from 1965 to 1970, is considered a cult classic because of its popularity.
Her most notable roles in the 1970s were those in ‘A Howling in the Woods,’ in which she co-starred with her ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ co-star Larry Hagman, and in ‘The Woman Hunter,’ and ‘The Stranger Within,’ all of which she featured in with her ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ co-star Larry Hagman. Barbara appeared in the comedy film ‘Harper Valley PTA,’ which was based on a folk song and released in 1978. The film was eventually adapted into a television series, which you can see here. On each of these productions, Barbara was cast in the lead parts.
Despite the fact that Barbara has worked on a variety of projects throughout the years, she is most known for her part as Jeannie in the iconic television series ‘I Dream of Jeannie’, which premiered in 1965. Eden returned to the part of Jeannie in the 1985 revival of the enormously popular program ‘I Dream of Jeannie, Fifteen Years Later,’ in which she recreated her role. Back in 1997, it was reported that Hollywood behemoth ‘Columbia Pictures’ was interested in producing a film based on this popular television series.
Eden was said to be playing the role of the new Jeannie’s aunt in this film. However, no such project has yet to see the light of day, despite several attempts. Laurel Awards jury members first saw Eden in 1961, when she was nominated in the category of ‘Top Female New Personality.’ Eden was nominated in the category of ‘Top Male New Personality.’ Eden was ranked tenth on this list, however, she did not get a reward since she did not qualify. Eden was also nominated for the coveted ‘Golden Globe’ awards on two occasions, in 1967 and 1970, and won one of them in 1970.
It was for her part in the iconic television series ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ that she was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of ‘Best TV star.’ Eden was honored with a ‘Star on the Walk of Fame’ award in 1988. Located at 7003 Hollywood Boulevard, this event took place. Eden was once again honored for her performance in the 1965 classic, and she also received a ‘TV Land Award’ for her performance in the television series ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ in 2003. “People” magazine named her one of the “200 Greatest Pop Icons of the 20th Century” and as “One of America’s 200 Greatest Pop Icons of All Time.”
Barbara Ansara was married to television star Michael Ansara in 1958. In the year 1974, the couple decided to separate. Mathew is the name of the kid that Barbara and Michael had together. Mathew was hooked to narcotics from a very early age, and he died at the age of 35 as a result of an accidental overdose. Barbara Fegert married Charles Donald Fegert, an executive at the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, in 1977. After a decade together, the couple divorced in 1983.
