On October 1, 1949, in the city of Maastricht, the Netherlands, André Rieu was born into a family with a musical background. At the age of five, he started taking lessons on the violin. His father worked in the conducting industry. He started interested in Orchestra at a very early age and never lost it.
Between 1968 and 1973, he attended the Conservatoire Royal de Liège and the Conservatorium Maastricht to study the violin. His educators were Jo Juda and Herman Krebbers, among others. From 1974 to 1977, he studied at the Music Academy in Brussels, where André Gertler taught him. While there, he was awarded the academy’s Premier Prize.
Career During his time at the university, he performed Franz Lehar’s “Gold and Silver Waltz.” He chose to follow the waltz form after the positive response he received from the audience. In addition to his work as a violinist with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, Rieu founded the Maastricht Salon Orchestra.
1987 was the year that he established both the Johann Strauss Orchestra as well as his production firm. Since then, his overdramatic stage performances and rock star manner have been linked, in some people’s minds, to a renaissance in the genre of music known as waltz. André Rieu uses a Stradivarius violin that was made in 1667.
On the long-running Australian soap series Neighbours, he had a cameo appearance as himself on the episode “Ramsay Street” in April 2009 (Australia) / June 2009 (UK).The orchestra’s first performance took place in 1987 with just 12 members, but it today features anything from 40 to 50 musicians.
When the Orchestra was touring Europe for the first time, there was a resurgence in interest in the music of waltzes. The Netherlands were the ones who started the Renaissance, and their rendition of the Second Waltz from Shostakovich’s Jazz Suites was the spark that set it off. Consequently, Rieu earned the title of “King of the Waltz.”
Rieu and his Orchestra have given performances worldwide, including in Japan, North America, and Europe. Their records have been certified gold or platinum in several countries, including eight times the latter achievement in the Netherlands, where they have also won several prizes, including two World Music prizes. Rieu gave his first solo performance in Australia in September of 2007, playing “My Way” and “Waltzing Matilda” at the Eastland shopping center in the suburb of Ringwood in Melbourne.
The following day, he appeared with the same set at the Arena Cove, Warringah Mall shopping complex in Sydney. In November, Andre Rieu and his Orchestra returned to Australia as part of their global tour. Rieu and his Orchestra gave three performances at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne between November 13 and 15, and they continued their tour in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide until December 2008.
The name of the performance is “A Romantic Vienna Night,” and the stage is designed to seem like a section of a Viennese castle. It has not one but two ice skating rinks, as well as two fountains and a ballroom dance floor that are positioned above and behind the Orchestra.
Rieu’s performance in Melbourne on November 15 had a total audience of 38,000 people, making it his most successful show in Australia. It was reported in the news that the performance in Perth would include a reproduction of the Viennese Palace; however, this did not occur since the model was too large to pass through the front doors of Subiaco Oval.
In his recording facilities in Maastricht, he has produced DVD and CD recordings of various musical styles, including famous and folk music and music from well-known film soundtracks and stage musicals. His work spans the genres of classical music, popular music, and folk music. This subgenre of classical music has gained fans from all around the globe thanks in large part to his enthusiastic orchestral concerts and his relentless marketing efforts.
Some of the performances of his Orchestra have been shown on the PBS television network in the United States and the United Kingdom. These shows include Andre Rieu Live in Dublin from 2003, which was filmed in Dublin, Ireland, and André Rieu Live in Tuscany from 2005, which was filmed in the Piazza Della Repubblica in the village of Cortona in the Italian region of Tuscany. Both of these shows were televised.
Richard Tognetti, the creative director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, has dubbed Rieu’s work various things, one of which is Schlagermusik. In an article that was published in The Australian newspaper by Eamon Kelly and discussed the controversy that Rieu generates, Kelly wrote as follows.
“He depicts his critics as members of a stuffy musical elite with narrow aesthetic tastes, yet regularly demeans in interviews music that is not to his taste and classical musicians who choose not to perform in his manner.” Kelly’s quote was taken from an article that discussed the controversy that Rieu generates.
