Bio

American composer Alan Irwin Menken is best known for his soundtracks and songs for movies made by Walt Disney Animation Studios. He has received two Academy Awards for each of his soundtracks and songs for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. Along with these films, he also wrote the music for Newsies, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Home on the Range, Enchanted, and Tangled. His accomplishments include a Daytime Emmy Award, a Tony Award, eleven Grammy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, a Daytime Emmy Award, and eight Academy Awards, making him the second most prolific Oscar winner in the music categories after Alfred Newman. Menken is one of just 17 individuals who have received the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards. He is the only individual to have received the Razzie, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. Judith and Norman Menken welcomed Alan Irwin Menken into the world on July 22, 1949, at French Hospital in Manhattan. His mother was an actress, dancer, and dramatist, while his father played the boogie-woogie piano.

His relatives were Jews. Menken started taking piano and violin lessons at a young age, which sparked his fascination with music. He started writing music at a young age. His original work “Bouree,” entered in the New York Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest at age nine, and received Superior and Excellent ratings from the panel of judges. Menken intended to either become a rock star or a recording artist after graduation. When he entered the Broadcast Music, Inc.  Musical Theatre Workshop and was taught by Lehman Engel, his interest in composing musicals grew.

From 1974 through 1978, he performed a number of BMI workshop pieces, including Messiah on Mott Street, Conversations with Pierre, Midnight, Apartment House, and Harry the Rat. When writer Howard Ashman picked Menken and Engel to pen the music for their musical version of Kurt Vonnegut’s book God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Menken finally found success as a composer. Excellent reviews and a low box office attendance greeted the musical’s 1979 WPA Theater debut. After a while, it moved to the Off-Broadway Entermedia Theater, where it performed for another six weeks.

Little Shop of Horrors, the pair’s subsequent musical, called for only nine actors and a puppeteer. The Little Shop of Horrors, a 1960 dark comedy movie, served as the inspiration for this musical. Warm praise greeted its 1982 WPA Theater debut. It was transferred to the Off-Broadway Orpheum Theatre in Manhattan’s East Village, where it performed for five years. The musical broke the all-time record for the highest-grossing Off-Broadway production at the box office. It was converted into a 1986 musical film starring Rick Moranis and toured extensively while winning theatrical prizes. For the song “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space,” Menken and Ashman received their first Oscar nomination.  He received the BMI Career Achievement Award for his body of work in musical theatre in 1983.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, adapted by Menken and lyricist David Spencer in 1987 and based on the same-titled 1959 book, was presented in Philadelphia. After several revisions, it was created in Montreal in 2015. Menken’s Weird Romance, which had lyrics by Spencer as well, was staged by the WPA Theatre in 1992.  In 1994, the Paramount Theater at Madison Square Garden hosted the world premiere of Alan Menken’s musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens novella A Christmas Carol, with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and a book by Mike Ockrent. The performance was a hit and became an annual Christmas tradition in New York.

He “worked as a ballet and contemporary dance accompanist, a musical director for club acts, a jingle composer, an arranger, a songwriter for Sesame Street, and a voice teacher” during this time, according to Menken. At venues like The Ballroom, Reno Sweeny, and Tramps, he sang his songs.

Members of Engel’s BMI Workshop began performing as part of the “Broadway at the Ballroom” series in 1976, according to John Wilson in The New York Times: “The opening workshop program… featured Maury Yeston and Alan Menken, both playing their piano accompaniment and singing songs they have written for potential musicals.”

In 1977, Menken accompanied a vocalist at the Ballroom, according to Wilson’s review: “A piano accompanist is no longer expected to just play the piano for a singer in the modern cabaret scene. More and more often, pianists may be heard singing along, harmonizing with the vocalist, adding screams and exclamations as a backdrop, or even performing short solo singing sections.”

In 1979, Chip Zien appeared in his revue Patch, Patch, Patch, which was performed at the West Bank Cafe in New York. Mel Gussow, a critic for The New York Times, stated: “The song’s title alludes to a life’s transition. Alan Menken claims that at the age of 30, everything starts to go bad.”

Atina, Evil Queen of the Galaxy, written by Menken in 1980 and with lyrics by Steve Brown, is one of the shows he composed but was never staged. Additionally, he composed The Thorn, which was commissioned by Divine in 1980 and included lyrics by Brown. Although it was a spoof of the movie The Rose, they were unable to gather the necessary funds to have it made. He worked with Howard Ashman on the unfinished musical Babe, Tom Eyen on Kicks: The Showgirl Musical, David Rogers on the A Midsummer Night’s Dream adaption The Dream in Royal Street, and others.  Robert J. Siegel’s 1980 film The Line, which features music by Menken, was produced.

He graduated in 1967 from New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York. Menken recalls: “Because I was bored with the piano and didn’t want to practice, I’d go off on tangents and make up my own Bach fugues and Beethoven sonatas.”  Then he started attending New York University.  He received his musicology degree from the university’s Steinhardt School in 1971. Meken remembered: “I first studied medicine. Like my father, I had imagined becoming a dentist. I eventually earned a degree in music, but I wasn’t interested in musicology. I didn’t realize this was it until I attended BMI Workshop… under Lehman Engel and entered a room with other songwriters.”  Menken said this “I started creating songs before I went to college to further my goal of becoming the next Bob Dylan. I write a lot of tunes on the guitar; before that, I wrote piano songs.”  He attended the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop after graduating from college.

He is renowned for his work on Broadway and other stages in musical theatre. Other stage blockbusters include Little Shop of Horrors, A Christmas Carol (1994), and Sister Act, some of which are based on his Disney movies. Menken has worked with lyricists such as David Zippel, Glenn Slater, Howard Ashman, Jack Feldman, Tim Rice, and Lynn Ahrens.
