Bio

Alan Arkin is a well-known American actor, director, producer, author, singer, and composer. He is also a winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. On March 26, 1934, in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, he was given the name Alan Wolf Arkin. His family had immigrated to Germany and Russia from Russia, and they were Jews. The Arkins relocated from Brooklyn, New York, to Los Angeles, California, in the year 1946. His father, David I. Arkin, was an artist and writer who worked as a teacher.

During the 1950s Red Scare, he was fired from his position for simply refusing to answer inquiries about his political affiliation. This caused him to lose his employment. David I. Arkin was an educator. Unfortunately, his father’s legal appeal to the politically motivated firing was successful in the end, but only after his son had already passed away. Beatrice (Wortis) Arkin, his mother and a schoolteacher, had the same beliefs as her husband. Since young Arkin enjoyed both singing and performing, he began attending a variety of acting lessons when he was 10 years old.

He received his high school education from Franklin High School in Los Angeles. From 1951 to 1953, he studied at Los Angeles City College. From 1953 to 1954, he received his education at Bennington College in Vermont. In college, he participated in both a drama class and a folk band, in which he sang. He left college to form the folk music group The Tarriers, in which Arkin served as the main vocalist and played guitar. Arkin was also a member of the band.

He was a co-writer of the Jamaican calypso folk song “The Banana Boat Song,” which became a successful song in 1956 thanks to Harry Belafonte’s rendition and reached number four on the Billboard chart. The song was written in 1956. At that time, Arkin was a struggling young actor who had little roles on television and on stage, and he earned a livelihood as a delivery boy, repairman, pot washer, and baby sitter. He was also a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Between the years of 1958 and 1968, he was a member of the children’s folk ensemble The Babysitters and contributed to their recordings. Additionally, he has provided the Elektra label with a whole album recording that is named “Folksongs – Once Over Lightly.”

In 1957, Arkin made his debut on the big screen in the film Calypso Heat Wave, performing as a lead vocalist with the band The Tarriers (1957). After that, he made his debut as a vocalist Off-Broadway in the production of “Heloise” (1958). The next year, he became a member of the Compass Theatre company in St. Louis, Missouri. While he was there, stage director Bob Sills took notice of him, and as a result, he was invited to join the Second City group that was based in Chicago.

After making his debut on Broadway in the musical “From the Second City” in 1961, for which he penned the lyrics and skits, Arkin went on to appear as David Kolowitz in the Broadway comedy “Enter Laughing” in 1963, for which he was awarded a Tony Award. After starring in the Broadway musical production of “From the Second City,” he returned to the stage in the role of Harry Berlin in the musical “Luv” (1964). Arkin made his debut as a director in 1966 with the Off-Broadway success titled “Eh?,” which also marked the first appearance of a young actor by the name of Dustin Hoffman.

He was awarded the Drama Desk Award for his directing of “Little Murders” (1969), which was performed off-Broadway, and he was also awarded the Drama Desk Award for “The White House Murder Case” (1970). In addition, he was the director of the first production of Neil Simon’s hilarious hit, “The Sunshine Boys,” which debuted in 1972 and lasted for more than 500 performances. Arkin’s first performance in a feature film, the comedy The Russians Are Coming (1966) directed by Norman Jewison, earned him a nomination for the Academy Award in the category of Best Actor.

Arkin co-starred in the film as Lt. Rozanov, a Soviet submariner who is mistaken for a spy after his boat accidentally wrecks aground in New England. In the film, Arkin was nominated for his first Academy Award. In the thriller picture Wait Until Dark (1967), which also starred Audrey Hepburn, Arkin gave a performance that showcased his emotional range as the psychotic murderer Roat. His performance as the sympathetic deaf-mute in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968) earned him a nomination for the Academy Award in the category of Best Actor in the Leading Role, which was his second Academy Award nomination overall.

He then went on to play Captain Yossarian in the 1970 film adaptation of Joseph Heller’s anti-war novel of the same name, Catch 22, which was directed by Mike Nichols and was based on the book of the same name. This part became his most famous. However, his career suffered as a result of the film’s initial failure to live up to expectations, despite the fact that it included what is undoubtedly Arkin’s best performance to date.

After a few years of directing work on television, Alan Arkin made a triumphant return to the acting world with an outstanding performance as the renowned physician Sigmund Freud in the film The Seven Percent Solution (1976). In the early 1980s, he had roles in three films that were written by his wife, Barbara Dana, and that also included his son, Adam Arkin, as a co-star. These films were considered family affairs.

In the 1990s, he had many noteworthy performances, including one as a jaded former baseball star in TNT’s Cooperstown (1993) and another as a humorous psychiatrist alongside John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank. Both of these roles were in films that were released in the decade (1997).
