Kumail Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and podcast host. He is best known for his work on the HBO comedy television series ‘Silicon Valley’ and the semi-autobiographical romantic comedy film ‘The Big Sick.’ Both of these works have garnered him a great deal of recognition. Additionally, he provided his voice for the animated series “Adventure Time,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award, and he co-hosted the programme “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail” on Comedy Central.
His weekly podcast called “The X-Files Files” was largely responsible for his rise to prominence. His early humour focused more on observations than on personal experiences; nonetheless, he quickly came to the conclusion that by doing so, he was evading a significant aspect of who he was. After coming to this conclusion, he made the decision to compose a narrative that was very personal to him. This decision led to the creation of his successful one-man show, which was titled “Unpronounceable.”
His subsequent comedic performances included references to his childhood in Pakistan as well as the inevitable culture shock he experienced after moving to the United States of America. He makes a conscious effort to talk freely about his secular views on religion, and he does not shy away from talking about sexuality, which is typically considered a taboo subject in most Islamic countries. Realizing how Muslims are often perceived as fanatics, he makes these efforts because he is aware of this perception.
His formative years were spent in Karachi, where he also received his education at Karachi Grammar School. Kumail moved to the United States when he was 18 years old to attend Grinnell College in Iowa for his undergraduate education. He graduated from Grinnell College in 2001 with degrees in Computer Science and Philosophy. After finishing his secondary education, Kumail moved to the United States.
After one of his uncles, who had travelled to Scotland and established himself there, he became the second member of his family to travel outside of the country.
He is Shereen Nanjiani’s second cousin twice removed. She works as a radio host in Scotland. After finishing his studies, Kumail Nanjiani made the conscious decision to pursue a career in stand-up comedy since he was uninterested in doing a typical office job. In the middle of 2007, he performed a one-man show titled “Unpronounceable” at the Lakeshore Theater in Chicago. This was the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame and extensive notice from the media.
His debut on television came on an episode of “Saturday Night Live” in 2008, when he had an uncredited part as an Indian reporter. This was his first appearance on television. The following year, he had guest appearances on two episodes of “The Colbert Report” and had a prominent part as the Pakistani worker Kumail in the television comedy series “Michael & Michael Have Issues.” Both of these roles were performed on television.
In the romantic comedy film “Life as We Know It” from 2010, he appeared for a brief period of time. In the year 2011, he was a guest in a skit for the programme “College Humor Originals” and performed in six episodes of the television show “Googy.” In July of that year, he began co-hosting the video game and nerd culture podcast known as “The Indoor Kids” with Ali Baker from G4TV’s “X-Play.” A month later, he brought on his wife Emily to take over the hosting duties for the show.
In the television sitcom “Franklin & Bash,” which aired on TNT from 2011 and 2014, he played the supporting character of Pindar Singh. Between 2011 and 2017, he appeared in over a dozen episodes of “Portlandia.” Following that, he had a voice part in the show “Adventure Time,” a regular role on the show “Newsreaders,” was the token ethnic competitor in the second season of “Burning Love,” and had a special appearance on the HBO show “Veep.”
Between the years 2012 and 2014, he appeared in supporting parts in a number of movies, including “The Five-Year Engagement,” “The Kings of Summer,” “Hell Baby,” and “Sex Tape.” Since 2013, he has been making regular appearances as a guest and comptroller on Dan Harmon’s podcast titled “Harmontown,” during which he often engages the host in a game of “Dungeons & Dragons.”Late in the month of June in 2013,
Comedy Central decided to take up the programme ‘The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,’ which was co-created by his wife Emily V. Gordon and presented by Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani. In July of 2013, the network presented a one-hour programme on him with the title “Beta Male,” then a year later, in July of 2014, it debuted “The Meltdown.” Since July 2014, he has been the presenter of the weekly podcast titled “The X-Files Files,” in which he often interviews former cast members, writers, producers, and directors of “The X-Files.”
In the years that followed, he proceeded to make guest appearances on a wide variety of television series, some of which include “The Pete Holmes Show,” which was hosted by his old classmate, “Key and Peele,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and “The X-Files.” In addition to providing his voice for animated films, he has also provided it for a number of different video games, some of which are “The Walking Dead: Season Two,” “Mass Effect: Andromeda,” and “Middle-earth: Shadow of War.”
In 2015, he provided the voice for the character Mshak Moradi in the audio drama titled “Hunt the Truth” as a part of the marketing campaign for the video game “Halo 5: Guardians.” Kumail Nanjiani, who also appears in the movie and helped to co-write it, received some of the highest praise from film critics in 2017 for his work on “The Big Sick.” It has also been a success on the financial front, as shown by the fact that it has already earned more than ten times its original budget of $5 million and has become one of the highest-grossing independent films of the year.
