The American singer-songwriter, actor, producer, and film director Wang Leehom was born on May 17, 1976. He is also sometimes identified as Leehom Wang. Wang Leehom is from the United States. His music is noted for blending hip-hop and R&B with traditional Chinese music (Beijing opera, Kunqu, Chinese orchestra, and tribal music from Tibet, Yunnan, and Mongolia). He received formal training at Eastman School of Music, Williams College, and Berklee College of Music. His music is known for merging genres.
Since making his debut in 1995, Wang has recorded a total of 25 albums, which have together sold more than 60 million copies. The Golden Melody Awards, which are considered to be the “Grammys” of Chinese music, have awarded him four times and nominated him for eighteen times. His performance in the Beijing Bird’s Nest, which has a capacity of 90,000 seats, was the first solo pop concert to be conducted at the illustrious venue. The show was completely sold out.
Wang is one of the most followed celebrities in China, thanks to the fact that he has over 72 million followers on social media. In 2014, Wang reached the top spot as the most followed person on China’s platform. CNN referred to him as the “King of Chinese Pop” in 2018, while the Los Angeles Times said that he was “the biggest American star America has never heard of.” Goldsea included Wang on his list of “The 100 Most Inspiring Asian Americans of All Time.” Wang was one of the women on the list.
Not only is Wang a musician, but he has also appeared in over twenty films, some of which include the movie Lust, Caution by Ang Lee, Little Big Soldier by Jackie Chan, and Blackhat by Michael Mann. The Macau Film Festival awarded him the title of Best Actor in 2018. At this year’s U.S.-Asia Entertainment Summit, the Asia Society honored Wang Leehom with the 2019 Game Changer Award.
He is an environmental activist, and the album he released, Change Me, was devoted to bringing environmental consciousness to the younger generation in China. The Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics included Wang as one of the first torchbearers, and he also performed the closing ceremony of the Olympics, which took place in Beijing. One of the few people in the Mandarin pop circle to have participated in the event twice, he was a torchbearer for the Summer Olympics in London in 2012.
He has been an advocate for World Vision Taiwan and Malaysia for a very long period. Wang started to acquire a curious interest in the violin and its musical equivalents when he was three years old. This curiosity was influenced by his elder brother, Leo Wang, who had been taking violin lessons since he was seven years old. He requested his mother to enroll him in violin lessons with his brother, but his mother refused to do so, citing the fact that he was too young to participate in such activities.
By the time Wang reached six years old, his mother had already enrolled him in violin courses, and he was already playing with his brother. At the time when he was a teenager, he started taking lessons on the piano and also taught himself how to play the guitar. Additionally, to be able to purchase used drum equipment, he worked many jobs to gather money. Jefferson Road Elementary School, Pittsford Middle School, and Pittsford Sutherland High School were all located in Pittsford, New York, where he received his childhood education.
The Pittsford Sutherland High School was his alma mater. Because he was so enthusiastic about pursuing a music career, he decided to enroll at Williams College and pursue a double degree in music and Asian studies. He became a member of The Springstreeters, an all-male cappella group, and the group had the opportunity to record several demo recordings. At the time, Wang was traveling to Taiwan to pay a visit to his grandparents during the summer of 1995.
Following his participation in a talent competition that was organized by the label, Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) extended an offer of a professional recording deal to him. Because he did not want to miss out on the chance, he started making preparations for his debut right away and released his first album, Love Rival, Beethoven, in December of that same year. His departure from the label was a direct result of the album receiving little attention.
The next year, he obtained a recording contract with Decca Records, a company that was well-known at the time for producing “powerful singers” in Taiwan. The record company had the intention of marketing Wang as the popular “romantic idol” in the beginning, similar to how they had marketed their previous star, Mavis Fan, to gain dominance over the idol market. Decca, on the other hand, started pushing Wang as Taiwan’s “quality idol” after recognizing his aptitude in the field of music-making.
The year 1996 saw the release of Wang’s second studio album, titled If You Heard My Song, which included a number of their original songs. Additionally, he contributed to the composition of the album’s title track, which received favorable reactions from the listeners. He became a growing celebrity in the idol market, and he also found comparable success with his third and fourth albums. The album’s sales were somewhat good, and he became a rising star.
It was around this period that Wang was informed that he could abandon his college studies to pursue a singing career on a full-time basis; nevertheless, he insisted on completing his education first. Following the release of Wang’s fourth studio album, White Paper, in the summer of 1997, Wang’s contract with Decca Records was canceled. Immediately after he graduated from Williams College with honors, he released his first album, Revolution, which went on to win several awards, under the label Sony Music Entertainment in August of 1998.
