Thomas G. Raffo is now a first base coach at the collegiate level in the United States of America. Raffo is now serving as the head coach of the baseball team for Arkansas State University’s Red Wolves. Raffo received his high school education at Bishop Kenny in Jacksonville, Florida. He was selected to the First Team All-AAA in Florida’s Classification. The Baltimore Orioles selected him in the 34th round of the 1986 Major League Baseball draft, but he ended up passing on the opportunity to sign with them. Raffo subsequently consented to attend Mississippi State University on a scholarship in order to participate in the collegiate baseball program there for the Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball team.
Raffo earned a spot on the Second Team All-Southeastern Conference in 1988, the year he was a sophomore. Raffo was given the position of volunteer assistant at Mississippi State University in the year 1994. In the autumn of 1997, he was given the position of assistant on a full-time basis. Raffo was one of the candidates under consideration for the head coaching job at Mississippi State in 2008; however, the Bulldogs ultimately elected to go with John Cohen, and Raffo went on to become the head coach of the Arkansas State Red Wolves baseball team instead. Jeff Purinton, the Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics at Arkansas State University, made the announcement on Monday that head baseball coach Tommy Raffo, who has the second-most victories in the school’s history, will return in 2024. Raffo currently holds the record for most wins.
Raffo just finished his 15th season at A-State, during which he led the Red Wolves to 20 wins, which was their best since the 2019 season. This was accomplished after he restructured the squad by adding 22 new players. A-State boosted their win total in the Sun Belt Conference by four games over the previous season. The school competes in a league that has the fifth-best RPI in the country and is one of five conferences that had at least four teams qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
Purinton said that “We’re facing several challenges to get our baseball program where we want it to be,” and one of those challenges is competing for NCAA Tournament bids and Sun Belt titles in one of the nation’s finest conferences. “We’re facing several challenges to get our baseball program where we want it to be,” “After having in-depth meetings with Coach Raffo, who is a highly-respected person in the world of baseball, he is devoted to enhancing our on-field performance and has methodically examined the many pathways going ahead to achieve this goal.
“Becoming an excellent program requires us to have many different components, and one of those components is coaching. We are putting in a lot of effort to enhance our baseball facilities, including the field and the stadium, as well as our budget so that we can compete better with the other teams in our conference. That is a high priority for us, and it is one of the things that we are working on resolving right now.
When compared to the previous season, A-State’s batting average increased from.246 to.276, their number of doubles increased from 65 to 118, their number of home runs increased from 40 to 41, and their number of RBI increased from 214 to 326. Additionally, A-State quadrupled the number of double plays it converted and committed 26 fewer errors, which resulted to an increase in their fielding percentage.952 to.968. The Red Wolves returned all but one position player in 2024, including Brandon Hager, who scored a team-high 15 home runs, which tied for the second-highest in school history for a single season. The Red Wolves placed 22nd in the country in doubles per game, and they return all but one position player in 2024. The 118 doubles recorded by the Red Wolves during the season matched the fourth-highest single-season total for the program and were the most since 2005.
“I want to thank Jeff Purinton for his continued support and trusting me to navigate our A-State baseball program,” said Raffo. “I appreciate the opportunity to lead our baseball team.” “We are not going to change our focus away from our student-athletes in any way. They are the reason why we as coaches do what we do, and I consider it a blessing to have the opportunity to work with some of Arkansas State’s most talented athletes.
“We return a core group of players who consistently showed improvement over the course of the season,” the coach said. If there is one thing that the new entrants to baseball in the Sun Belt have told us so far this season, it is that there is a clear need for advancements. In order for our student-athletes to be successful and competitive, we need to show our support for them both physically at the games and financially via contributions to the program. This program is all about the student-athletes that put in a lot of effort day in and day out to make the Red Wolves Baseball team the best it can be in a league that is notoriously tough.
The improvement in A-State’s runs per game from 4.7 to 7.3 in 2023 moved the school’s national standing from 278th in 2022 to 89th in 2023, representing a 55 percent improvement. While the offensive productivity of the Red Wolves substantially improved over the course of the previous season, which resulted in 13 triumphs when scoring at least 10 runs, the team also had 14 defeats when surrendering 10 or more runs and lost 10 games while leading or tied after the first six innings of play.
Raffo guided the Red Wolves to their greatest result in the history of the Sun Belt Conference, which was a 19–9 record and a second-place finish. As a direct consequence of this, he was awarded the title of Coach of the Year for the Sun Belt Conference in 2012. Raffo had a batting average of.383 as a junior in 1989, while also hitting 22 home runs and collecting 80 RBIs. He was selected for the All-SEC First Team. Raffo was selected by the Miami Miracle in the eighth round in the Major League Baseball draft in the year 1990. Raffo started his career in the major leagues with the Miracle of the Class A Florida State League. There, he hit.258 and had three home runs during his time with the team.
Raffo was a member of the Cincinnati Reds organization during the 1991 season when he was with the Charleston Wheelers. The Wheelers competed in the Class A South Atlantic League. In 133 games, he played, he had a batting average of.277, with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs. In 1992, he was a member of the Cedar Rapids Reds baseball team, which competed in the Midwest League. During the season, he had a batting average of.302 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs. He agreed to play with the St. Paul Saints for the 1993 season and signed a contract with the team. In 48 games, he had a.321 batting average with 20 runs batted in. In 1990, when he was a senior, he had a batting average of.358, along with 13 home runs and 69 RBIs. He was placed on the First Team All-SEC once again.
