Rose Lavelle Bio

Rosemary Kathleen Lavelle is a professional soccer player from the United States. She was born on May 14, 1995, and currently competes for the United States national team as well as the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League. Lavelle plays the midfield position for both teams.

Before making her debut with the United States national team at the senior international level in 2017, Lavelle competed for the United States at numerous youth levels. Lavelle started her professional career in 2016 with the Boston Breakers after completing her undergraduate career with the Wisconsin Badgers. She then moved to the Washington Spirit in 2017 after playing for the Boston Breakers for a year. She was given the Bronze Ball for her performance in the 2019 World Cup, in which she started six games for the United States and scored three goals. In the same year, she was selected for inclusion in the 2019 FIFA FIFPro World XI as well as being awarded the title of the sixth greatest player in the world at The greatest FIFA Football Awards 2019.

She contributed to the United States bronze medal performance in the 2020 Olympics by scoring one goal for the team. Lavelle played girls’ soccer on the varsity team at Mount Notre Dame High School for four years, and during her senior year, the newspaper The Cincinnati Enquirer recognized her as Cincinnati’s Player of the Year. During the same season, she led her squad in scoring with 15 goals and 38 points. With 57 tallies throughout the course of her high school career, Lavelle ended as the top scorer on the squad. She was recognized as a first-team all-state selection by the NSCAA both as a junior and as a senior, and both times she was chosen to the NSCAA All-Region team. The Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Sports Women of the Year award was bestowed to her in the year 2013.

In 2013, Lavelle was given permission to participate in the collegiate soccer program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Lavelle has been a starter for all four years of his collegiate career. As a rookie, he made 19 appearances, scored six goals, and had seven assists, earning him the title of Big Ten Conference Rookie of the Year. In 2014, Wisconsin was the champion of the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament. Lavelle was honored with the title of Big Ten Midfielder of the Year for both 2015 and 2016 consecutively. In addition, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected her for first-team All-American honors the same year, making her the first Wisconsin Badger to receive this honor since 1991. On January 12, 2017, the Boston Breakers used the first pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft to choose Lavelle. This was the highest overall pick in the draft.

Lavelle kicked off her career as a professional athlete by scoring two goals in a total of eight games, which earned her the title of Player of the Month for the month of April. However, Lavelle was only able to make a total of 10 appearances during his rookie year due to a hamstring injury that he sustained in June while on international duty. This caused him to miss more than two months of action. Before the start of the 2018 season, the Breakers went out of business. The National Women’s Soccer League organized a dispersal draft to disperse Breakers players to other teams in the league. The Washington Spirit, who had earned the first selection by trading with Sky Blue FC, used it to choose Lavelle as the top choice in the overall draft.

Lavelle was only able to play in eleven games for the Spirit in 2018, mostly because of injuries and international commitments. Lavelle was chosen to the 2019 NWSL Best XI in the end of the season honors despite the fact that she only made six appearances the next year due to international service, scored one goal, and recorded one assist. In addition, she only recorded one assist. Because the COVID-19 epidemic disrupted the 2020 season, Lavelle played in the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2020.

She made four appearances and scored one goal for Washington, who placed second in the preliminary group but were knocked out by Sky Blue FC in the first knockout round on penalties. Lavelle was selected to be a member of the national team squad in September of 2018, in preparation for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which served as a qualifying competition for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was a part of all five of the United States’ matches and scored three goals for her team. The United States of America was able to win their second consecutive CONCACAF title thanks in large part to the last goal that she scored throughout the tournament. It came in the second minute of the title game versus Canada.

At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was held in France, Lavelle started all six games that the United States played in. She finished the tournament as the third-best player in the competition, which earned her the Bronze Ball at the FIFA Women’s World Cup awards ceremony. Lavelle got a brace in the United States’ opening group stage encounter, which they played against Thailand and ultimately won 13–0. Megan Rapinoe scored the game-winning penalty kick for the United States of America as they defeated Spain 2–1 to move to the quarterfinals of the competition. She was the one who drew the foul that led to the penalty shot. Lavelle scored the second goal for the United States of America in the championship game against the Netherlands, which helped the team win 2–0.

The Best FIFA Football Awards 2019 identified Lavelle as one of the world’s top 11 players, and her fellow professionals voted her one of the top three midfielders in the world for the 2019 FIFA FIFPro World XI. Lavelle finished sixth in this year’s competition for the Best FIFA Football Awards. Lavelle was moved to OL Reign on August 16, 2020, in return for OL Reign’s natural first-round selection in the 2022 NWSL College Draft, $100,000 in allocation money, and future performance-based allocation money, with the understanding that she would be signing with another organization outside of the league.
