Richard Blanco was born in Madrid on February 15, 1968, and he emigrated to the United States with his Cuban exile family when he was a young child. His birthday is February 15. He attended Florida International University, receiving his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and master’s degree in creative writing. He was born and raised in Miami. Since 1991, Blanco has been working in engineering, writing, and poetry. All of these collections have been honored with awards.
Blanco was honored to be selected as the fifth inaugural poet of the United States in 2013. Blanco became the youngest writer ever to hold the title, as well as the first Latino, immigrant, and out homosexual writer, when he read “One Today,” an original poem he had written just for the event. Blanco penned the song “Boston Strong” in May of 2013, and he later performed it during a benefit concert held at the TD Garden and a Red Sox game played at Fenway Park. After his performances, he published a chapbook with a limited run called Boston Strong, and he donated the revenues from the sale of the book to individuals who had been worst hit by the bombings at the Boston Marathon in 2013. Blanco also penned and recited a poem to celebrate the historic reopening of the United States Embassy in Havana, Cuba; the poetry, titled Matters of the Sea/Cosas del Mar, was released as a multilingual chapbook in 2015. Blanco delivered the poem during the event.
In addition, he is the author of the memoir The Prince of Los Cocuyos (Ecco Press, 2014), an account of his childhood and adolescence spent coming to terms with his sexual, national, and cultural identities. This memoir was awarded the Lambda Literary Award. He is also the author of the book For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey (Beacon Press, 2013). His first poem, “One Today,” was adapted into a children’s book and published by Little Brown in 2015. Dav Pilkey drew the book.
Blanco is presently a member of the teaching staff of Florida International University, the institution from which he earned both his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1991) and his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (1997). He has taught at the US National Archives Poetry of LGBTQ History for Human and Civil Rights and was named a founding member of the President Obama Foundation Advisory Council. In addition, he was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Boundaries (2017) is a publication that resulted from his partnership with landscape photographer Jacob Bond Hessler. Blanco has previously held teaching positions at Georgetown University, American University, the Writer’s Center, and Wesleyan University and Central Connecticut State University. Currently, he holds the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor at Florida International University. He calls the town of Bethel in Maine his home.
