Rachel Platten Bio

Rachel Ashley Platten is a well-known American singer, songwriter, and novelist. She was born on May 20, 1981, in the United States. After independently releasing two albums in 2003 and 2011, she signed with Columbia Records in 2015 and released her mainstream debut single, “Fight Song.” The single topped the charts in the United Kingdom and peaked within the top ten of multiple charts around the world. It reached its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Platten’s live performance of the song on Good Morning America earned her a Daytime Emmy Award, which she went on to accept. Wildfire, her maiden studio album for a major label, was released in 2016 and was awarded gold status by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album contained the follow-up songs “Stand by You” and “Better Place.” Waves, her second studio album released on a big label, arrived exactly one year later.

Outside of music, Platten has been involved in a variety of other endeavors. Photos of Platten’s appearance as a model for the ad campaign of the apparel brand Aerie were taken in their original form and have not been altered in any way. She was featured prominently on the cover of the May 2018 edition of The Improper Bostonian magazine.

Platten has contributed to a wide variety of charitable organizations, some of which include Music Unites, the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, Autism Speaks, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, BuildOn, and Live Below the Line. Since the early 2000s, she has been employed by Musicians on Call, where she now participates in a program in which she does bedside singing for hospital patients. Platten has donated her time to more than fifty different Musicians On Call programs as a volunteer. At a charity event held on December 1, 2015, the organization recognized Platten for the voluntary work she has done by bestowing upon her the Music Heals Award. Melanie is her younger sister, and they are close.

Platten began her musical training at the piano at the age of five, later switching to the guitar during her time in high school. She received her high school education at Buckingham Browne and Nichols, where she was a member of the school’s singing club. She participated in the college’s pioneering all-female a cappella group, the Trinity College Trinitones when she was a student at Trinity College. The song “Fight Song” from Wildfire was made available for download by Platten on February 19, 2015.

The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, number two on the Australian Singles Chart, number six in Ireland, number eight in New Zealand, number nine on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 chart, and number one on the United Kingdom Singles Chart. During Swift’s 1989 World Tour, Platten and Swift collaborated on a performance of “Fight Song” that took place in Philadelphia in front of 50,000 people in June of 2015. In the United States, “Fight Song” has achieved sales of quintuple platinum. The Fight Song EP was released by Platten in 2015 hit number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, and it went on to become the official song for Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Platten was one of the opening acts for Alex & Sierra and Andy Grammer’s “The Good Guys & A Girl Tour” at the beginning of 2015. After that, she went on the road with Colbie Caillat and Christina Perri for the duration of their “Girls’ Night Out, Boys Can Come To Tour” in the summer of 2015. “Stand by You” is the second single that Platten has released from her album Wildfire, and it was released on September 11, 2015. It reached its highest position on the charts in the top 10 in both Canada and the United States, while it reached its highest position in the top 20 in both Australia and Poland. Since then, the song has been awarded the Platinum certification in the United States.

Following the massacre at an Orlando nightclub, Platten made the announcement that the revenues from the newly released acoustic version of her song “Fight Song” will be donated to the National Compassion Fund. This fund is striving to help the needs of individuals who were affected by the tragedy. Platten gave a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the first game of the 2016 World Series in October of that year. Platten and Gavin DeGraw performed songs such as “Fight Song,” “Stand by You,” “Beating Me Up,” and John Lennon’s “Imagine” during the Times Square Ball celebrations that took place on New Year’s Eve 2016 in New York City’s Times Square. Platten co-headlined the event with Gavin DeGraw. In 2017, Platten participated as the opening act for three gigs in Los Angeles, one show in Las Vegas, and one show in Las Vegas on the Soul2Soul: The World Tour that was headlined by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

She traveled to Trinidad as part of a program that allowed her to study in another country and do an internship there. Her placements were at a record company and the office of a diplomat. During her time there, she participated in the International Soca Monarch finals in 2002 as a backing singer for a friend’s band, which took place in front of more than 80,000 people. Platten claims that from that point on, she was always aware that she needed to devote her life to music.

In 2003, Platten received a degree in political science from Trinity College, where she had previously studied. She relocated to New York City’s Greenwich Village, where she made recordings of demos and played in a band called Dayz of Wild that covered songs by Prince and Sly and the Family Stone. She was employed in a variety of roles, including that of a waiter, a jingle writer, and a salesman for Estée Lauder. She started her solo music career in the Village and ultimately proceeded to travel the nation after moving on from that scene.
