Paul van Dyk was born on 16 December 1971. Since the middle of the ’90s, trance has been inextricably linked to Paul van Dyk, one of the most legendary DJs and producers in dance music history. By fusing minor-key melodies with ecstatic beats in his first compositions like his 1993 remix of Humate’s “Love Stimulation” and the 1994 hit “For an Angel,” he helped lay the groundwork for the progressive trance sound that would become ubiquitous by the decade’s end. With the rise of the superclub phenomenon and the general public’s embrace of dance music, van Dyk enjoyed meteoric success, playing to sold-out crowds all over the world.
Around the year 2000, van Dyk began working more regularly with vocalists, which led to his biggest pop hits, such as “Tell Me Why” featuring Saint Etienne, which peaked in the Top Ten in the United Kingdom. By reimagining the music of megastars like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, he kept making waves in the mainstream. As he became more involved in politics, he spoke out publicly against the war and began a series of publications in 2001 titled The Politics of Dancing.
By the middle of the 2000s, he had already been nominated for a Grammy and had won accolades from a number of different dance periodicals, giving him widespread public exposure. His prolific output continued into the 2010s with albums like 2012’s Evolution and 2017’s From Then On, as well as his regular VONYC Sessions mix program and his continued popularity as a club and festival DJ.
The mid-’80s were when van Dyk, a native of a German town near Frankfurt, first heard house music on the radio. After arriving in Berlin, he began doing shows all over the city while experimenting with a basic turntable setup. By 1991, he had already performed at the famed Tresor club, and he would go on to start his own E-Werk club and make his recording debut as Visions of Shiva alongside fellow trance master Cosmic Baby.
After doing remixes for the likes of New Order, Humate, and Sven Väth, he signed with German label MFS Records in 1994 to release his debut album, 45 RPM, which featured the original version of the ever-popular club staple “For an Angel.” By the mid-1990s, van Dyk had established himself as a world-renowned DJ and remixer. Singles “Beautiful Place,” “Forbidden Fruit,” and “Words” from his second album, Seven Ways, all charted on the British and German dance charts. In addition to his original studio albums, which were both released in the United States in 1998, van Dyk has also released two remix collections, titled Perspective and Vorsprung Dyk Technik.
PvD is widely regarded as one of the most prolific electronic music acts due to his ubiquitous festival headlining appearances, worldwide tour sellouts, and prolific discography. Van Dyk tours the world over 16 times a year, playing to sold-out crowds every time. His albums have sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Paul’s global fame was on full display on New Year’s Eve 2008/2009, when he performed at Barra Beach in Rio de Janeiro in front of an estimated 1 million people.
In 2008, Paul branched out into scoring films and video games. Mirror’s Edge and Grand Slam Tennis, both from 2009, feature his work with EA Games and their respective soundtracks. Remixing Hanz Zimmer’s “Dark Knight Theme” for Batman is another project to which Paul has contributed his skills. Paul, however, is no stranger to high-profile remixes, having previously given his own spin to such songs as “Martyr” by Depeche Mode, “What Goes Around” by Justin Timberlake, and “Gimme More” by Britney Spears. David Byrne, Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls, Rea Garvey of Reamon, and Johnny McDaid of Vega 4 all contributed to his original 2007 album, titled In Between.
In 2005, PvD’s original album Reflections was nominated for a Grammy, making history as the first dance/electronic record to be considered for a Grammy.
PvD also won Best International DJ, Best Event, and Best Music in a Commercial at the 2004 Dancestar Awards, and was named “America’s Favorite DJ” by BPM Magazine in 2004 and 2005. In March of 2004, he also received the Mexican Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film Zurdo. Among the many accolades bestowed upon Paul van Dyk are the following: “Best Music Maker” from DJ Magazine, “Best International DJ Award” from the 1999 Music Awards in London, “Best International DJ” from Ministry of Sound Magazine, and “Man of the Year” from Mixmag.
Paul van Dyk, a musician who has also devoted much of his life to politics and social justice, fled to the West as a young man. When Bono, P. Diddy, the Black Eyed Peas, and George Clinton went on a statewide tour to encourage young Americans to register to vote in the 2004 presidential election, PvD was the only electronic act to join them. Recently, he was awarded Berlin’s Medal of Honor for his efforts with Ruckenwind, a charity he established to aid disadvantaged youngsters in Berlin. With this award, he joins an elite group of artists and politicians.
