Patricia Smith is a well-known name in the American literary community for her work as a poet, spoken-word performer, dramatist, novelist, writing instructor, and former journalist. In September 1991, Patricia Smith released her first book, Life According to Motown. Twenty years later, Smith has decided to reissue the book for its 20th anniversary. Like most of her poems, this book draws from her background in Chicago during the 1960s, describing the lessons learned among the challenges and glitter of Motown. She is the most successful poet in the history of the National Poetry Slam, having won the solo competition of the event a total of four times, and she has also been awarded the Pushcart Prize on two separate occasions. Awarded to Smith in 2023, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry was a prestigious honor for the poet.
