Merle Haggard Bio

Merle Ronald Haggard was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler. He was born on April 6, 1937, and passed away on April 6, 2016. Around the time that the Great Depression was coming to a conclusion, Haggard was born in Oildale, California. After the passing of his father, he had a difficult life, and he spent time in juvenile detention on multiple occasions during his youth.

He was able to successfully turn his life around after being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, and he went on to have a great career as a country music singer. He rose to prominence as a result of the songs he wrote about the working class, which occasionally included ideas that ran counter to the anti-Vietnam War feeling that was prevalent in some popular music of the period.

He had 38 songs that peaked at number one on the country charts in the United States between the years 1960 and 1980, and several of those songs also charted on the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Even into the 2000s, Haggard continued to put out albums that were commercially successful.

He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1977), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1994), and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (1997), in addition to receiving a number of other honors and awards for his contributions to music, including a Kennedy Centre Honour (2010), a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), a BMI Icon Award (2006), and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006).

He passed away on his 79th birthday, April 6, 2016, at his ranch in Shasta County, California. He had been hospitalized for a bout of double pneumonia not long before his death. Haggard’s parents were Flossie Mae (née Harp; 1902–1984) and James Francis Haggard (1899–1946). Following the destruction of their barn in 1934, the family decided to leave their home in Checotah, Oklahoma, and migrate to California during the height of the Great Depression.

They found a home in an apartment in Bakersfield for themselves and their two older children, James ‘Lowell’ (1922–1996) and Lillian, and James began working for the Santa Fe Railroad around the same time. A woman who owned a boxcar that was parked in Oildale, a town that was close by, approached Haggard’s father and inquired about the possibility of turning the boxcar into a house.

Soon after, he moved in and purchased the lot, which was where Merle Ronald Haggard was born on April 6, 1937. He had the boxcar remodeled before making the transfer. Eventually, an addition consisting of a bathroom, a second bedroom, a kitchen, and a breakfast nook was constructed on the neighboring lot, which allowed for the property to be expanded.

Haggard’s father passed away in 1946 as a result of a brain hemorrhage. When Haggard was just nine years old, he was profoundly shaken by the loss, and it served as a defining moment for him for the rest of his life. In order to provide for her son and his family, Haggard’s mother became employed as an accountant. When Merle was 12 years old, his older brother Lowell presented him with his guitar. Haggard taught himself how to play it on his own[9] by listening to records he had at home, and he cited Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, and Hank Williams as his primary musical influences.

While Haggard’s mother was busy working during the day, the boy began getting into mischief on his own. Although she tried to discipline him by sending him to a juvenile detention center for the weekend, he did not show any signs of improvement in his behavior. If anything, he deteriorated over time. By the time Haggard was 13 years old, he had begun stealing and writing bogus checks. In 1950, he was caught stealing from a store and sentenced to a juvenile facility for his crime.

The year after that, he skipped town with his buddy Bob Teague and headed to the Lone Star State. The two individuals traveled across the state by hitchhiking and riding freight trains. Upon their return later that year, the two lads were arrested and charged with larceny, which led to their incarceration. This time, they were not responsible for the crime at all, and they were let go after the genuine perpetrators of the crime were discovered. The event did not have a significant impact on Haggard.

Later on in the same year, he was once again taken to a juvenile detention center, but he and his friend were able to get out of the facility and make their way to Modesto, California. While he was there, he did a variety of labourer tasks, such as driving a potato truck, working as a short-order chef, pitching hay, and shooting oil wells. His first performance was with Teague in a pub in Modesto called “Fun Centre.” He was paid $5 and offered free beer for the show, which he gave in exchange.

In 1951, he moved back to Bakersfield, and the same year, he was taken into custody for the offenses of truancy and petty theft, and he was placed in a facility for young offenders. After yet another attempt at escape, he was transferred to the Preston School of Industry, a facility with a high level of protection. After being locked up for 15 months, he was finally let out, but he was sent right back after he assaulted a local youth while attempting to burglarize a house.

Following Haggard’s release from prison, he and Teague went to a performance by Lefty Frizzell. While they were sitting backstage, Haggard started singing along with the performance. Frizzell, who was backstage and heard the young man, stated that he would not perform until Haggard was given the opportunity to sing first. It did, and the audience responded favorably to Haggard’s performance. As a result of this event, Haggard made the decision to embark on a career in music. While working during the day as a farmhand or in the oil fields, he would spend his evenings performing in the local pubs, singing and playing the guitar.

He was married at the time, and he was having trouble financially when, in 1957, he attempted to rob a Bakersfield roadhouse. He was apprehended, and he was arrested. After being found guilty, he was arrested and taken to the Bakersfield Jail. On February 21, 1958, he was moved to San Quentin Prison after making an attempt to escape earlier that year. At that location, he was detained under the number A45200.

While Haggard was incarcerated, he found out that his wife was expecting a child by another man, which caused him to experience significant mental strain. After being terminated from a number of prison jobs, he planned to break out of jail along with another convict who was given the nickname “Rabbit” (James Kendrick), but other inmates talked him out of it.

Together with his cellmate, Haggard established a gambling and brewing scam while he was incarcerated at San Quentin. Following his arrest for intoxication, he was placed in solitary confinement for a week, during which time he met Caryl Chessman, an author who was also serving time on death row. In the meantime, “Rabbit” had been able to successfully escape, but he had to return to San Quentin for his execution because he had shot a police officer.

Both Chessman’s plight and “Rabbit’s” death on the execution block motivated Haggard to make significant changes in his life. He quickly obtained his high school equivalency diploma and maintained stable employment in the textile plant of the correctional facility. In addition to that, he was a member of the country music band at the institution. In 1960, he was granted parole and released from San Quentin prison.
