Liz Cambage Bio

Elizabeth Folake Cambage is an Australian professional basketball player who currently competes for the Maccabi Bnot Ashdod team in the Israeli Female Basketball Premier League. She was born on the 18th of August 1991. Cambage’s performance against the New York Liberty on July 17, 2018, when she scored 53 points, is presently the best in WNBA history for a single game in terms of scoring.

Between the years 2009 and 2021, she was a member of the Australian national team known as the Opals. During her time with the Opals, Australia won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the silver medal at the 2018 World Cup, and the bronze medal at the 2012 OlymLiz Cambages. Cambage’s parents divorced when she was just three months old, and she relocated to Australia with her mother after they had left the country. Cambage’s family originally established their home in Eden, in the state of New South Wales. When Cambage was 10 years old, they relocated to Melbourne, and then subsequently to the Mornington Peninsula.

Cambage has a height of 2.03 meters (6 feet 8 inches). At school, she received teasing because of her height. She grew from a height of 1.83 meters (6 ft 0 in) when she was 10 years old to a height of 1.96 meters (6 ft 5 in) when she was 14 years old. When she was 10 years old, her mother suggested that she start playing basketball as a method to meet new people, and she did so. She competed in the Under-20 Australian National Championships in 2009[, and after her performance, ABC speculated that she would succeed Lauren Jackson. At the time, the only other international players who were taller than Cambage were Margo Dydek, who stood at 2.18 meters (7 feet 2 inches), and Sue Geh, who stood at 2.05 meters (6 feet 8 inches and one-half inches).

Cambage was a member of the Dandenong Rangers junior basketball team before joining the Dandenong Rangers WNBL team for the 2007–08 season. She decided to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) after being offered a scholarship there in 2007.  She was a member of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) team that competed in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in Canberra for the rest of the 2007–08 season and the season that came after it. Cambage made her comeback to the WNBL in August of 2020, when she signed a contract to play for the Southside Flyers for the 2020–21 season.

Cambage made it apparent in March 2011 that she did not want to play for the Tulsa Shock, the team in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) that had drafted her. She said, “I don’t want to play at Tulsa, I’ve made that obvious. They want to turn me into a franchise player, but I have no intention of playing in the WNBA because of it. I want to go there so that I can acquire new skills and get better at my game. But what options do you have? She was a participant in the WNBA All-Star Game in 2011.

WNBA All-Star VIP Party Hosted by Liz Cambage in 2011. Cambage was scheduled to return to the United States after the 2012 Summer OlymLiz Cambages to finish the WNBA season with the Tulsa Shock. However, she made the announcement that she will not be returning to the United States to finish the 2012 season on the morning of August 27, 2012, the day before her flight was scheduled to depart. After playing for the national team, her representative issued a statement claiming that she was too weary to continue.

Cambage made her way back to the court in time to play for the Shock for the 2013 season, but she did not compete in the WNBA again for another five years after that. She became a Dallas Wings player after signing a multiyear contract with the team in February of 2018. Cambage reportedly agreed to a salary of AUS$400,000 when she signed with the Zhejiang Chouzhou basketball club in China in June of 2012.

This pay places Cambage among the highest-paid female basketball players in the world. However, in an article that was published on March 8, 2019, in the Australian Daily The Age, Cambage complained about being badly treated and being unable to meet her home payments. She noted that she had not been paid since September 2018, which was due to an injury that prevented her from playing in China. She is reported to have said, “It’s funny, we make all these sacrifices for our nation, but are we getting looked after properly at the end of the day?”

Cambage put pen to paper on a deal with the Dallas Wings that was for multiple years in February of 2018. Cambage broke the WNBA scoring record with 53 points on July 17, 2018, when she was competing against the New York Liberty. The score of the game was 104–87 in favor of the Wings. Cambage was selected to play in the 2018 WNBA All-Star Game, which will be her second time participating in the event. Following her performance in which she scored 53 points, she then scored 35 points in a triumph over the Washington Mystics in which they were defeated 90–81, making it the greatest two-game point total in the history of the league.

Cambage concluded the year as the scoring leader in the league, while the Wings finished with a record of 15–19 and were the number-eight seed in the league. The Wings were eliminated in the first round after suffering a defeat to the Phoenix Mercury by a score of 101–83. Cambage approached the Wings with a trade request on the 22nd of January, 2019. On May 16, 2019, she was included in a trade that sent her to the Las Vegas Aces. Cambage was selected to participate in the All-Star Game for the 2019 season, which marked her third time being selected for the game.

The Aces concluded the regular season with a record of 21–13, which earned them the number-four spot and a bye into the second round of the playoffs. The Aces won their second-round elimination game against the Chicago Sky by a score of 93–92 thanks to a play by their teammate Dearica Hamby, in which she came up with a steal and made a desperate three-point shot from half court. This allowed the Aces to progress to the semifinals of the tournament. The Aces were eliminated from the playoffs in the semifinals when they were swept by the eventual champions, the Washington Mystics, in four games. This put an end to the Aces’ run in the postseason.
