With three siblings, Larry Wilcox was reared by a single parent – his mother – in the Wyoming town of Rawlins as he was growing up. He graduated and then went on to the University of Wyoming, where he studied pre-med before transferring to Cal State University Northridge in Southern California to complete his education. Following the sad murder of his sister in front of her mother and their three children, Larry went to his hometown to support the family in their time of need.

He also appeared on The Partridge Family and Hawaii Five-0, among many others. He was then cast in the television series CHiPS, alongside co-star Erik Estrada, for which he starred for five years and which was syndicated in over one hundred foreign countries during that time. A businessman at heart, Wilcox founded his own production firm during this period and began purchasing scripts and novels, as well as negotiating partnerships with studios and television networks.
The Death of a Playmate: The Dorothy Stratten Story, which he produced for MGM and NBC, was inspired by the death of his sister, and he believed it had many parallels. He subsequently went on to design, fund, and produce the award-winning television series The Ray Bradbury Theater for HBO, which ran for five years and won numerous awards.
