Keith Sweat Bio

Keith Sweat was born on  22 July 1961. Keith Douglas Sweat’s factory worker father Charles and hairdresser mother Juanita gave birth to their son. He got his start performing at New York City clubs when he was just 14 years old, having grown up in the Harlem neighborhood. His teenage years in New York City were spent juggling schoolwork with singing and playing at various places.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in “communications” from the City University of New York and then found success as a brokerage assistant at a thriving Wall Street business. He had a successful profession on Wall Street, but he gave it up to follow his dream of becoming a musician. He started creating songs and sent them to different record labels.  Later, as a solo artist, he experienced unprecedented success, with albums and singles that reached No. 1 on R&B and Billboard charts.

He pioneered the genre known as “New Jack Swing,” which fuses soul vocals with hip-hop beats. Sweat, with his signature ‘whining’ vocal style, has become one of the most popular male R&B/soul artists, not just in the United States, but all around the world. With the release of his triple-platinum certified album “Make It Last Forever,” he has easily presided over a musical style that has consistently evolved, making him a veteran of modern R&B music. He has never shied away from using a conventional soul base in his music, despite incorporating several contemporary changes, like the use of the wingbeat.

His musical career began in 1975 when he joined the Jamilah, a band headquartered in Harlem. He toured the tri-state area as the lead singer of the band. He broke away from the band “Jamilah” in 1984 to pursue a solo career, and he has since performed in a number of New York City nightclubs. The independent record label ‘Stadium Records’ took note of him right away and offered him a chance to make an album for them.

He’s listed as a co-writer and co-producer on the songs “You Are the One for Me” and “My Mind Is Made Up,” both of which he recorded for the “Stadium Records” label. His first solo album, titled “Make It Last Forever,” was released on November 25, 1987. The album was a smashing success, with the single “I Want Her” becoming a worldwide phenomenon. His second album, 1990’s “I’ll Give All My Love to You,” also reached number one on the charts and won him even more fans.

The tracks “Why Me Baby” and “Keep It Comin” appeared on his third studio album, which was released in 1991 under the title “Keep It Comin.” Get Up on It was his fourth studio album, released in 1994. From this album, “How Do You Like It,” “When I Give My Love,” and “When I Give My Love Again” were all released as singles. His debut album, released on June 25, 1996, featured the top 40 hits “Twisted” and “Nobody.” One of the year’s biggest hits was the track “Twisted.”

With the success of Come and Get with Me, he released his sixth studio album, Still in the Game, in 1998. A year later, with the release of “I’m Not Ready,” they had another smash success. By the year 2000, his star had started to fade and his albums were no longer number one. Singles from his seventh album, “Didn’t See Me Coming,” failed to crack the top 40. His eighth studio album, titled “Rebirth,” was released on August 13, 2002. Compared to his prior albums, this one sold relatively poorly in the marketplace.

In 2008, he released his eighth studio album, titled “Just Me.” The first single, “Love You Better,” was featured on the “Urban Radio Station” a year before the album’s release, indicating a respectable level of success. His eleventh studio album, titled “Ridin Solo,” was published by Kedar Records on June 22, 2010. His first album, ‘Make It Last Forever,’ was released in 1987 and spent three weeks at the top of the ‘Top R&B Albums chart. The RIAA certified the album triple platinum since it sold three million copies in the United States.

From his 1996 self-titled album, the single “Twisted” reached the top of the U.S. R&B chart and the top two on the Billboard Hot 100, a popularity measure used by the American music business. His second album, titled “I’ll Give All My Love to You,” was a commercial success, topping the “Top R&B Albums” chart and peaking at number six on the “Billboard 200” album chart. The album was certified two times platinum since it sold so many copies.

Although Sweat’s mainstream popularity waned toward the decade’s close, he continued to be an influential figure in R&B with the release of modern albums like Get Up on It, Keith Sweat, and Still in the Game. In addition, he produced a number of notable ’90s groups, including Silk, Kut Klose, and Dru Hill, and the first of two albums recorded with Gerald LeVert and Johnny Gill billed as LSG, was considerably popular. His last two albums for Elektra, Didn’t See Me Coming and Rebirth, kicked off the next decade. After filming Just Me in Atco, he shifted to Kedar for Ridin’ Alone.

The album ‘Til the Morning was his KDS label’s inaugural release. Sweat hosted a contentious Dru Hill reunion on his Centric channel reality show Keith Sweat’s Platinum Mansion. Both that band and Silk appeared as special guests on Dress to Impress. Nearing its tenth year on the air at the time of its publication, his syndicated radio show The Sweat Hotel included R&B from the 1970s to the present. Sweat has released a dozen studio albums, the most recent of which is 2018’s Playing for Keeps, which features appearances from K-Ci, Akon, Teddy Riley, and Tank.
