Kaja Kallas Bio

Kaja Kallas, who was born on June 18, 1977, is a politician from Estonia. She has been serving as the Prime Minister of Estonia since 2021, making her the first woman to hold the position. The leader of the Reform Party since 2018, she served as a member of the Riigikogu (the Estonian parliament) from 2011 to 2014 and again from 2019 to 2021. Between the years 2014 and 2018, Kallas served as a member of the European Parliament, where he represented the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe constituency.

She was a lawyer who specialized in European competition law before her election to the Riigikogu parliament. Eduard Alver, a lawyer who lived from 1886 to 1939, was Kallas’s great-grandfather on his father’s side. He was the leader of the Estonian Defense League during the Estonian War of Independence. In addition, he was the head of the Estonian Police and the Estonian Internal Security Service.

During the Soviet deportation that took place in June of 1941, Kallas’ mother Kirsti, who was only six months old at the time, moved to Siberia together with her mother and grandmother. Later, eleven years later, they were granted permission to go back to Estonia. When investigative journalists were looking into her father’s background soon after he became prime minister, they found that in addition to her Estonian lineage, Kallas also had distant Latvian and Baltic German ancestors.

After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Tartu in 1999, Kallas received a bachelor’s degree in law. During the time that she was studying European law, she spent some time living in France and Finland. The Estonian Business School was her educational institution of choice beginning in 2007, and she graduated with an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in 2010. It was in the year 1999 that Kallas joined the Estonian Bar Association, and it was in the year 2002 that he became an attorney-at-law.

Not only did she serve as an executive coach at the Estonian Business School, but she also became a partner at the legal firm Luiga Mody Haal Borenius and Tark & Co. The European Antitrust Alliance is another organization that she is a member of. Her membership in the Estonian Bar Association was terminated in 2011, and she was put on inactive status as a result. Kallas released her memoir, titled MEP: 4 aastat Euroopa Parlamendis (MEP: Four Years in the European Parliament), in November of 2018. In this book, she gives a detailed account of her life and work in Brussels from 2014 to 2018.

In the election for the European Parliament that took place in Estonia in 2014, Kallas garnered 21,498 votes received. During his time in the European Parliament, Kallas was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy. Additionally, he filled in for the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection. A member of the delegation to the European Parliamentary Assembly and the delegation for relations with the United States, she also served as vice-chair of the delegation to the EU–Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. In addition, she was a member of the delegation for relations with the Americans.

In addition to the responsibilities she had with the committees, Kallas served as a member of the Intergroup on the Digital Agenda of the European Parliament (MEP) and also served as the vice-chair of the Youth Intergroup. While she was serving in Parliament, Kallas worked on several issues, including the strategy for the Digital Single Market, policy on energy and consumers, and relations with Ukraine.

More specifically, she advocated for the rights of small and medium-sized businesses, arguing that boundaries in the digital world are a barrier to the development of new businesses. She is a supporter of innovation and constantly emphasizes that rules cannot and must not impede the technology revolution. She is a passionate advocate for innovation.

Kallas served as the rapporteur for six different reports, including the opinion on the ePrivacy Regulation, the civil law rules on robotics, the Annual report on EU Competition Policy, and the report on Delivering a New Deal for Energy Consumers. Additionally, he was responsible for the legislation on Customs infringements and sanctions, as well as the report with his initiative on the Digital Single Market. Throughout her tenure serving in Parliament, she was also considered for the position of European Young Leader (EYL40).

She was selected by Politico as one of the forty most prominent members of the European Parliament (MEP) after her tenure. She was also recognized as one of the most powerful women in Brussels, and she was praised for her awareness of technology challenges. On the thirteenth of December 2017, the head of the Reform Party, Hanno Pevkur, announced that he would no longer be running for the leadership of the party in January 2018. He proposed that Kallas should run instead.

After giving the idea some thought, Kallas announced on December 15, 2017, that she would be accepting the invitation to run for the leadership position in the next election. Having emerged victorious in the leadership election that took place on April 14, 2018, Kallas made history by becoming the first woman to ever head a major political party in Estonia. The Reform Party, which is headed by Kallas, earned around 29% of the vote in the parliamentary election that took place in Estonia on March 3, 2019, whereas the Estonian Centre Party, which is now in power, garnered 23% of the vote.

Along with the conservative Isamaa party and the far-right EKRE, the Centre Party was successful in forming the second ministry of Jurij Ratas. As a result, the Reform Party was unable to take power. At a Reform Party Assembly that took place on November 14, 2020, Kallas was re-elected to his position as the head of the Reform Party. The first government that Kaja Kallas would build was a coalition with the Centre Party, and it was formed on January 25, 2021, after the collapse of the cabinet that was headed by the Centre Party and comprised of conservative parties. Being the first woman to ever hold the position of Prime Minister in Estonia’s history, she achieved this feat.

Kallas had a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, in Kyiv in the year 2021. There was a disruption in the Estonian economy during the latter part of 2021 as a result of the worldwide energy crisis. Businesses were compelled to temporarily close their doors, and the general population asked for assistance from the government to pay for the high costs of electricity and heating. At first, Kallas expressed opposition to the idea of receiving assistance from the government, arguing that the government had to focus on finding long-term solutions rather than providing assistance.
