John Stockton Bio

John Houston Stockton is a well-known former professional basketball player from the United States. He was born on March 26, 1962. He spent his entire NBA career with the Utah Jazz, and during that time, the club qualified for the playoffs in each of his 19 seasons. He is widely regarded as one of the best point guards, players, and passers in the history of the game. Stockton guided the Jazz to their only two trips in the NBA Finals, both of which were defeats at the hands of the Chicago Bulls, in the years 1997 and 1998. His longtime colleague Karl Malone was also instrumental in both efforts.

Stockton was named to the NBA All-Star team eleven times throughout his career and now owns the records for most career assists and steals by a significant margin. In 2009, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his individual career, and then in 2010, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame again as a member of the United States Olympic basketball team from 1992. In the year 1996, he was recognized as one of the top 50 players in the history of the NBA. In October of 2021, Stockton received even another recognition as one of the best players in the history of the game when he was selected for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Following careful consideration of the opportunities presented to him by Don Monson at Idaho and Mike Montgomery at Montana, both of which compete in the Big Sky Conference, Stockton made the decision to remain in Spokane and play collegiate basketball coach Dan Fitzgerald at Gonzaga University. He enrolled in the University of Georgia, becoming the third member of his family to do so. His grandpa Houston Stockton was a famous football player for the Bulldogs in the 1920s. Fitzgerald was also the athletic director at the school; following Stockton’s freshman year, he took a break from coaching for four years and elevated assistant coach Jay Hillock to the position of head coach instead.

In 1984, when Stockton was a senior with the Bulldogs, he had a scoring average of 20.9 points per game while shooting 57% from the field. Stockton finished first in the West Coast Athletic Conference in scoring, assists, and steals while the Gonzaga Bulldogs achieved their best record in 17 years, going 17–11 overall. As a result of his efforts, he was recognized as the WCAC Player of the Year, becoming the first Gonzaga player in the history of the program to receive this honor.

In the spring of 1984, he was one of 74 college players who were asked to try out for the United States Olympic squad, which was coached by Bob Knight. Stockton was one of the 20 players who survived the first round of elimination in April, but he was one of the four players who were eliminated in the last round in May, bringing the total number of players left in the tournament down to 16. Despite the fact that he was not chosen for the position, the experience introduced him to his future buddy and teammate, Karl Malone. Stockton was chosen by the Utah Jazz as the 16th overall choice in the first round of the 1984 NBA draft in June 1984. The draft was held in Utah.

His value considerably increased in the weeks leading up to the selection, despite the fact that he had a collegiate career during which he was largely unknown. On the day of the draft, hundreds of Jazz fans were assembled at the Salt Palace, and when the news was announced that he had been selected, there was complete and utter quiet. During a game against the Denver Nuggets on November 10, 1984, Stockton had his best scoring game as a rookie, scoring 19 points in just 19 minutes of playing time. This occurred during a game that the Nuggets ultimately won.

In the 1987–1988 season, Stockton was promoted to the role of starting point guard for the Jazz. In that season, despite Stockton finally ranking tenth in MVP voting and being chosen to the All-NBA Second Team after averaging 14.7 points, 13.8 assists, and 3 steals per game, he was not picked to participate in the 1988 NBA All-Star Game. This was despite the fact that Stockton had a season in which he had been voted to the All-NBA Second Team. In the 1988–1989 NBA season, he participated in the All-Star Game for the first time and also led the league in assists per game for the first of what would be nine consecutive seasons.

In a home victory against the San Antonio Spurs on January 15, 1991, Stockton tallied 20 points and gave out a career-high and franchise-record 28 assists. This performance set a new mark for the club. In a victory against the Houston Rockets that took place on February 12, Stockton came very close to recording a triple-double by scoring 19 points, dishing out 11 assists, and swiping 9 steals. Stockton and the Jazz made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 1992, but ultimately fell short against the Portland Trail Blazers in a series that went the distance. In 1993, the All-Star Game was played in Salt Lake City, where John Stockton and Karl Malone were both honored with the Most Valuable Player award.

Stockton reached a number of important milestones during the 1994-1995 season. As he handed out 16 assists in a 129-98 win against the Denver Nuggets on February 1, 1995, he surpassed Magic Johnson as the all-time leader in assists in the National Basketball Association. Magic Johnson had 9,921 assists at the time. At that point in his career, his 16 assists brought his total number of assists to 9,937. Magic Johnson once claimed to John Stockton during an interview, “John, from one assist man to another, you are the greatest team leader I have ever played against.” Stockton agreed with Magic Johnson’s assessment.

After another seventeen days, Stockton defeated the Boston Celtics with the help of 15 assists and a final score of 108-98. The 15 assists he sent out brought his career total to 10,008 assists, making him the first player in the history of the sport to ever have more than 10,000 assists in his career. Following a defeat to the Dallas Mavericks by a score of 117-110 on March 25, Stockton just became the second player in the history of the NBA to have earned 2,000 steals after recording 6 steals in the game.
