Bio

John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His family relocated from where he was born in Michigan to where they currently reside in Orlando, Florida via Birmingham, Alabama. William Henry Hank Green II is his younger brother. He got his education at Orlando’s Lake Highland Preparatory School and Alabama’s Indian Springs School. Green earned a BA in English and a BA in Religious studies from Kenyon College in 2000.

After finishing college, he spent a few months serving as a student chaplain at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He signed up for the Divinity School at the University of Chicago but never showed up. John Green is an American author, vlogger, producer, and editor who originally planned to become a priest until being profoundly affected by his work with terminally ill children and writing the novel The Fault in Our Stars as a result of his experiences there.

Almost 24 million copies of his books have been printed, and they have been translated and published in more than 55 languages. His novels “Looking for Alaska,” “An Abundance of Katherines,” “Paper Towns,” and “The Fault in Our Stars” are all New York Times bestsellers. Green, a multi-award-winning author, is also a harsh critic of his own work. He has been praised for paving a new path in the field of young adult fiction. Some critics even say he started a new golden age of realistic YA literature. The New York Times even coined the genre of “GreenLit” to represent his works for young adults.

On July 14, 2015, the mayor of Indianapolis proclaimed John Green Day in the city, while on July 17, 2015, the mayor of Orange County did the same. His YouTube videos have become just as popular as his best-selling books. The ‘VlogBrothers’ YouTube channel began when Green and his brother abandoned texting in favor of video chat. They followed that up with another educational YouTube channel called “Crash Course for Kids,” and today both channels have millions of subscribers and views every month. More than 5 million people follow him on Twitter.

John Green got his start in the publishing industry working as an assistant and later as a production editor for Booklist, a Chicago-based book review publication. In addition to his work as a book reviewer, he also contributed radio essays to WBEZ Chicago and NPR’s All Things Considered. He began working on his novel “Looking for Alaska” at this time. Searching for Alaska, his debut novel, was released by Dutton Children’s Books in 2005. His time at Indian Springs High School served as inspiration for a story of teen love. Despite Paramount’s purchase of the rights in 2005, no film adaptation has yet been produced. The book’s popularity among young readers only grew with the passage of time, and by 2012 it was featured on the list of best-selling paperback books in The New York Times.

In 2006, he published his second novel, titled “An Abundance of Katherines.” The Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Printz Award both shortlisted it. The main character, Colin, employs some advanced math to examine his romantic relationships in this YA novel. Along with his brother Hank Green, he launched the channel VlogBrothers in 2007. At least eleven online series have been produced by them throughout the years, with the most popular being Crash Course, which is aimed at high school students and is by far the most successful. VlogBrothers has over 3 million subscribers and over 700 million views as of July 2017.

After the launch of VlogBrothers, the brothers attracted a large following that eventually coalesced into a movement known as Nerdfighters. Project for Awesome, an annual charity event, is only one of several humanitarian projects in which the band is actively involved. The Green brothers have made a number of side ventures, such as the YouTube game show “Fact or Fail” and the annual VidCon convention for the online video community.

The brothers initiated the Project for Awesome when YouTubers dedicate two days of their December to making videos in support of non-governmental organizations. The total amount raised in 2015 was $1,546,384. Let It Snow: Three Christmas Romances, a novel he co-wrote in 2008, debuted at No.10 on The New York Times Best Seller list in November 2009. His 2008 third novel, “Paper Towns,” was adapted into a film of the same name in 2015, and it debuted at number five on The New York Times Best Seller list for children’s books in 2009. Green served as the film’s executive producer. Green has had to apologize for using the word “retarded” in “Paper Towns,” which was criticized by his readers despite the generally positive reception his works have gotten.

In 2010, Green and his friend David Levithan wrote and published by Dutton Juvenile the novel Will Grayson, Will Grayson. The book spent three weeks on the New York Times best-seller list for kids. It’s the first book of its kind aimed at young adults to make the list. His sixth novel, “The Fault in Our Stars,” was published in 2012 and became the top-selling children’s book in New York City. The book was motivated by his time spent working in a hospital, where he saw the anguish of youngsters who were fighting for their lives. A cancer-stricken teenager’s story of love and hope. In 2014, a cinematic adaptation of the book was released.

After receiving funding from Google in 2012, the Green brothers’ Crash Course channel branched out into a second channel for children called Crash Course Kids. Literature, science, mythology, and even cinema history were among the many topics covered. The channel had over 11 million views and 158k subscribers as of July 2017.
