Jimmy Butler Bio

Jimmy Butler III is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on September 14, 1989, in the United States. Jimmy Butler is a six-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA Team recipient, a five-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team honoree, and an Olympic gold medalist from the 2016 Summer Olympics. His nicknames are “Jimmy Buckets” and “Playoff Jimmy.”  He has also been called “Playoff Jimmy.” He started his collegiate basketball career at Tyler Junior College, where he played for one season, before moving to Marquette University.

In the 2011 National Basketball Association draft, the Chicago Bulls selected Butler with the 30th overall choice. He was given the award for Most Improved Player in the NBA for the year 2015. In June of 2017, he was dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves after spending the previous six seasons with the Chicago Bulls. In November of 2018, Butler was involved in yet another trade, this time with the Philadelphia 76ers. In July of 2019, he inked a deal to play for the Heat. In Butler’s first year with the team, they made it all the way to the NBA championship game.

In 2021, he had the most thefts of any player in the league. He guided the eighth-seeded Heat to their second consecutive appearance in the NBA finals in 2023 under his direction. When Butler was still a young child, his biological father left the household. His mother forced him to leave the house when he was just 13 years old, and they were living in the Houston suburb of Tomball at the time. According to Butler’s recollection from an interview he gave in 2011, she informed him, “I don’t like the appearance of you. You have no choice but to leave.”

After that, he moved around from the homes of his numerous acquaintances, typically remaining at one location for a period of several weeks before moving on to the next place. In spite of everything that has happened, Butler has managed to keep a strong relationship with both of his parents. He has stated, “I don’t harbor grudges. I maintain contact with my family. My mother and my father both. We are in love with one another. That is something that will never change.

When he was playing in a summer basketball league prior to his senior year at Tomball High School, he caught the attention of Jordan Leslie, a freshman at the school who plays football and basketball, who then challenged him to a three-point shooting competition. Almost immediately, they started hanging out together and Butler eventually started sleeping at Leslie’s place. Although his friend’s mother and stepfather, who already shared custody of six other children, were hesitant at first, they eventually agreed to take him in after a few months had passed.

In subsequent years, Butler was quoted as saying, “They accepted me into their family. And the reason has nothing to do with basketball. Simply put, she was a really caring person [Michelle Lambert, Leslie’s mother]. That was just the kind of thing she did. I had no way of believing it. When Butler was a junior at Tomball High School, he scored 10 points per game on average. In the 2006–07 season, Butler was a senior and the team captain. That year, he had a scoring average of 19.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, and as a result, he was elected the most valuable player on his team.

The decision to attend Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, was made by Butler after he graduated from high school because he was not actively recruited. After Butler’s first year at Tyler, during which he had posted averages of 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, Division I schools expressed interest in recruiting him for their teams. According to 247Sports.com, he was a two-star recruit and was ranked as the 127th-best junior college prospect in the US in the year 2008.

Butler attended Marquette on an athletic scholarship and achieved a free throw percentage of 76.8 percent as a sophomore in the 2008–2009 season. During that time, he scored 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and had a free throw percentage of 76.8 percent. As a junior in the 2009–10 season, he earned All-Big East Honorable Mention recognition for moving into the starting lineup to post an average of 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game after moving into the starting lineup.

His season was highlighted by two game-winning jumpers, one against UConn and the other against St. John’s, which assisted Marquette in finishing 11–7 in the Big East and earning its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. In his senior season, 2010–11, he posted a scoring average of 15.7 points per game and got an Honorable Mention nod for All-Big East for the second year in a row. In the 2011 National Basketball Association draft, the Chicago Bulls picked Butler with the thirty-first overall pick. He only appeared in 42 games during the lockout-shortened 2011–12 season, which was his debut year, and he had few opportunities to contribute.

The year after that, he participated in all 82 of the Bulls’ games for that season. After getting only a few minutes of playing time to open the 2012–13 season, he saw a big increase in his playing time during the second half of the season and started every one of the team’s 12 playoff games. In a game against the Toronto Raptors during the regular season on April 9, 2013, Butler scored a then career-high 28 points in a game that they ultimately lost 101–98.  Two days later, he scored his first NBA double-double game against the New York Knicks by scoring 22 points and grabbing a then-career-high 14 rebounds in the game.

Butler was only able to participate in 67 games during the 2013–14 season owing to injuries that forced him to miss 15 games. He set a new best for his career with an average of 38.7 minutes played each game, which was the most in the NBA. On December 30, he played against the Memphis Grizzlies and set a new season high with 26 points scored. On January 15, he played for a total of 60 minutes and 20 seconds in a triple-overtime game against the Orlando Magic and finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. This performance established a new record for the organization. At the conclusion of the campaign, he was honored with a spot on the Second Team of NBA All-Defensive Players.
