Jamie Cullum Bio

Jamie Cullum was born on 20 August 1979. Jamie Cullum, a British musician with a raspy croon and impressive piano skills, has won praise for his eclectic blend of jazz, lyrical pop, and rock. Cullum’s breakthrough came with 2002’s Pointless Nostalgic and 2003’s Twentysomething; the latter was nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.  Cullum, who was formerly likened to Harry Connick Jr. and Norah Jones, has evolved into a unique singer/songwriter who can switch effortlessly between heartfelt ballads and witty pop tunes. Since 2005’s Catching Tales, when he dabbled in electronica, he has released two albums of original soft rock, 2010’s The Pursuit and 2019’s Taller. Despite this, he frequently returns to jazz, notably on the symphonic standards album Interlude from 2014.

Cullum moved to the Wiltshire village of Hullavington when he was a child after being born in Rochford, Essex. After hearing his older brother, bassist and producer Ben Cullum, he began playing guitar and piano at age eight and quickly developed a deep appreciation for jazz. Cullum sharpened his skills as a jazz pianist in Paris, where he was influenced by the likes of Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck. Music was a strong interest, but he settled on Reading University to study English literature instead. At the young age of 19, he made his debut album at Reading, titled Heard It All Before.

Due to the album’s unexpected popularity, jazz bassist Geoff Gascoyne reached out to Cullum and invited him to appear on his album Songs of the Summer. Gascoyne inspired Cullum to make his second album, Pointless Nostalgic, which came out in 2002. The album got a lot of exposure thanks to significant play on television and on the radio program hosted by Michael Parkinson on BBC 2. In 2003, Cullum’s third studio album, Twentysomething, became a critical and commercial success, prompting him to sign with Universal Records.

He became the most successful British jazz performer of all time as the album broke sales records and topped the charts throughout the world. Cullum’s first-ever Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album came as a result of this album’s success. Two more albums, Catching Stories and In the Mind of Jamie Cullum, followed. Cullum and Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 2009. The album The Pursuit came out a year later.

Momentum was Cullum’s sixth studio album, released in 2013. It fared rather well, peaking at #20 on the UK album charts. Interlude, Cullum’s album of symphonic standards, was released in October 2014 and debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200. In 2019, he released Taller, an album of original songs produced by Troy Miller, which debuted in the top ten in the United Kingdom. In 2020 November, a special Christmas edition of The Pianoman was released.

Cullum was born and raised in Hullavington, and at the age of 15, he started performing in a rock band. He soon found himself captivated by jazz and performing it in clubs and on ships. After living in Paris for a year, he enrolled at Reading University in England to study film, English, music composition and acting. In 1999, he self-funded the recording of his debut album, Heard It All Before, which he sold from the stage in limited editions. Two years later, a jazz label released his second album, Pointless Nostalgic, which quickly became a favorite on British radio, prompting a bidding war between Sony and Universal to sign him.

As a jazz musician, he performs multiple instruments, including piano, guitar, and drums. The musician has worked with many famous musicians over his career, such as Gnarls Barkley, Elton John, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, etc. He also participated in a wide range of international music festivals. Festivals such as Coachella, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Montreux’s, and the International Festival of Jazz in Montréal were all included.

In fact, Cullum performed before the largest Queensday crowd in Dutch history on April 30, 2006. Jamie Cullum has a net worth of $12 million in 2019 US Dollars, according to estimates from reputable sources. Hence, Cullum is of mixed-race ancestry. His grandmother on his father’s side escaped Nazi persecution. The singer was raised in Hullavington, Wiltshire, a little town to the north of Chippenham. Ben Cullum, a brother, is one of his relatives.

His educational background includes time spent at both Grittleton House School and Sheldon School. After that, Jamie earned a degree in English Literature and Cinema Studies from the University of Reading. He even received a degree with the highest honors.

Seen It All Before, Pointless Nostalgia, Twentysomething, Twenty Zero Zero Five, and Catching Tales are the five albums released by Cullum. These tracks range from jazz standards and musical theater pieces to versions of iconic rock and pop songs as well as original compositions by Cullum and his older brother Ben. Cullum’s love for a wide variety of genres is reflected in his record choices, which range from rock to pop to hip hop to dance to drum ‘n’ bass to vintage jazz to Broadway and movie scores. Cullum has a sandpapery midrange tenor as a singer. His piano playing is often light and rhythmic.

In contrast, Cullum uses the piano more like a percussive instrument when he performs. He flips the bench over and pounds on it while tapping out rhythms on the wood and plucking at the strings. Cullum’s live performance is just as varied and entertaining as his CDs, with scatting, a cappella singing, sing-alongs, and even a sniff at the end of “I get no thrill from Cocaine” in Cole Porter’s “I Get a Kick Out of You.” Cullum’s performance has been praised for its contrast to the subdued character of standard jazz concerts.

The melodic touch he applies to his cover songs has also been praised. Cullum transforms “The Wind Cries Mary,” originally performed by Jimi Hendrix of the psychedelic rock band The Experience, into a gospel number in the style of New Orleans, and “I Could Have Danced All Night,” originally performed in the musical My Fair Lady by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe, into a thumping, club-friendly dance tune.
