Bio

Three-time World Barrel Racing Champion Hailey Kinsel was born on October 3, 1994; she was formerly known by her married name Hailey Kinsel Lockwood. In the National Finals Rodeo in 2018, 2019, and 2020, Kinsel claimed victory. Additionally, she took home the NFR Average crown in 2020. In her years of professional rodeo, Kinsel and her horses qualified for the NFR five times: in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Since she was a young adult, Kinsel has competed in rodeo, earning accolades in professional rodeo, barrel racing, and breakaway roping while still in high school and college. 2018’s Barrel Racing Horse of the Year Award went to her horse, Sister. The day of her birth was October 3, 1994. Her parents, Dan and Leslie Kinsel (née Walker), raised her in Cotulla, Texas. Her mother, who comes from a riding family, was Miss Rodeo Texas in 1980.

Her parents, who both have rodeo experience and manage a commercial beef cattle ranch, had a significant role in promoting her interest in horses and rodeo. Along with intellectual and livestock competitions, they gave her and her brother the opportunity to compete in horseback riding and other activities. Kinsel at first favored competing as a gymnast. She developed a greater interest in rodeo and barrel racing when she became 11 years old. Kinsel’s first specialized barrel horse, who “couldn’t be utilized around the ranch,” was given to her when she was thirteen. Josey was one that Kinsel and I “kind of pulled along jointly” because she was off the rails. In junior high and high school, Kinsel competed with Josey, but she stopped when the mare got hurt. Kinsel then rode Thunder Stones, sometimes known as TJ, in college rodeo competitions.

When she applied for her professional permit with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, TJ was also there. Sister was purchased by the Kinsel family when she was 2 years old, during Kinsel’s first year of college, and she and her mother alternated riding her. Sister had some inherent ability, but they had trouble training her. Before entering Sister in a futurity competition, they waited until she was 5 years old. Kinsel qualified for the NFR for the first time in 2017, which was her second year racing barrels. The mare earned $35,000 in her first 14 months of racing. In Elizabeth, Colorado, in 2016 and Denver, Colorado, in 2017, Kinsel ridded Sister to her first professional rodeo victory.

Kinsel triumphed at the West of the Pecos Rodeo in Texas and earned a gold medal at the Days of ’47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City, Utah. At the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, she tied for second place after placing second at the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas, the Dinosaur Days Rodeo in Vernal, Utah, the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo in Oklahoma, and the San Patricio County PRCA Rodeo in Sinton, Texas. She participated in breakaway roping at the 2017 WPRA World Finals in addition to barrel racing. Kinsel began competing in the preliminary rounds of the American Rodeo in February, the “world’s richest one-day rodeo.” At the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the rodeo is held. Kinsel and Sister won the semi-finals with a time of 14.08 seconds and advanced to the second round of the semi-finals on Thursday.

On Sunday, February 19, Kinsel and Sister won the semi-finals and went on to the finals, where they might win a $1 million reward. Sister and Kinsel went all out and won first, despite taking risks, while Kinsel required a flawless run to take second.  Kinsel won her competition in the long round with a timing of 14.4 seconds and advanced to the top four for the short round. She and Sister won the competition and set the event record with a time of 14.689 in the short round. The $1 million prize was distributed among three competitors from three distinct competitions. Kinsel, Cody DeMoss, and Sage Kimzey each got $100,000 for winning their respective tournaments in addition to $333,333.33 from the so-called side pot.  That day, the three contestants each received $433,333.33.

At the Glen Rose Better Barrel Races Regional (BBR) Qualifier in November 2016, Kinsel earned a spot in the American Rodeo. Kinsel became the first BBR/The American Qualifier to divide the $1 million prize as a result of that qualification. Kinsel’s total wins of $433,333.33 set a record for BBR members because she is a member.  Kinsel admitted after her victory, “I didn’t wear the correct mascara for this. “My horse is magnificent, and God is good.” Sister assisted Kinsel in winning about $500,000 in the recent months up to and including the American.

Kinsel and her mother purchased DM Sissy Hayday “Sister,” their current barrel racing mount when she was a foal. One of the many horses they purchased as young horses and trained while using others to fill in the gaps was Sister. They started training Sister from scratch. Sherry Cervi’s PC Frenchman’s Hayday, also known as Dinero, was the father of Sister. “We chose her because we already owned an older half-sister to her by the mare Royal Shake Em, whom we adored. We looked for that bloodline and pedigree, thinking that if she had been crossed with Dinero, things may be excellent “, Kinsel stated. Kinsel became a professional in 2015 when he joined the WPRA.

While other rodeo sports are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the WPRA oversees barrel racing and breakaway roping. However, PRCA rodeos are where the barrel racing competitions happen alongside male competitions like bronc riding and team roping. The National Finals Rodeo, which takes place in December at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, includes all of the championship rodeo competitions.  At the Days of ’47 Rodeo in July 2017, she successfully qualified for the NFR for the first time. She took first place in the RFD-American TV’s Rodeo in 2017, finished second in 2018, and then won again in 2019 and 2021.
