Geraldo Rivera Bio

Geraldo Rivera is an American journalist, attorney, author, and political analyst. He worked at Fox News Channel from 2001 until 2023. Geraldo Rivera was born Gerald Riviera on July 4, 1943.  Geraldo Rivera is a political pundit. Between the years 1987 and 1998, he was the host of the tabloid talk program Geraldo. He became known to the public after appearing in the live TV show “The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults” in 1986. Geraldo at Large was the name of the news magazine program that Rivera aired. When he is not hosting At Large, Rivera hosts the occasional broadcast of Geraldo Rivera Reports. Between the years 2022 and 2023, he participated as a rotating co-host on “The Five.”

Rivera was born in New York City, New York, at the Beth Israel Medical Center. His parents, Lillian (née Friedman; October 16, 1924 – June 3, 2018) and Cruz “Allen” Rivera (October 1, 1915 – November 1987), were, respectively, employed in the hospitality industry as a waitress and cab driver. Rivera was the son of Lillian and Cruz “Allen” Rivera. His father, who was originally from Puerto Rico, is where he gets his Galego Spanish lineage from.

His mother was an Ashkenazi, which is a branch of the Jewish religion, while his father was a Christian, namely of the Roman Catholic faith. Rivera had a bar mitzvah and had a “mostly Jewish” upbringing when he was growing up. He spent his childhood in Brooklyn as well as in West Babylon, New York, where he received his secondary education at West Babylon High School. Although Riviera, Ribeira, Rivera, and Ribera are all variations of the same family name as spelled by Galician, Italian, and Portuguese ancestors, Rivera’s mother began spelling their surname as “Riviera” to avoid having bigotry aimed at them.

Rivera’s family was sometimes subjected to prejudice and racism, and his mother began spelling their surname “Riviera” to prevent having bigotry directed at them. The huge number of people who settled in Puerto Rico in the 1500s who came from Galicia in Spain gave rise to the widespread use of the Rivera family name. In addition, the surname Rivera was quite widespread among Jews of the Sephardic religion. Additionally, he has a connection to the Lebovitz family in Brooklyn, New York. My mother gave me the name Gerald Riviera on my birth certificate, but she added an additional “i” to the end of my father’s surname.

This was done when I was born. Irene, my sister, was also a beneficiary of her kindness. Later on, Mom would put an end to the charade for my sister Sharon, but soon after the birth of my baby brother Craig, she would begin it all over again. When we questioned her about the contradictions, she would nervously shrug and make jokes to get out of answering our questions. She would respond with, “I just forgot how to spell it,” and that would be the end of it. I began to realize that underneath it all, she was deeply humiliated by the amateurish attempt that she had made at covering up her ethnicity.

Between the years of 1961 and 1963, he was a student at the State University of New York Maritime College located in the Throggs Neck neighborhood of the Bronx. While there, he competed on the school’s rowing squad. After that, he made the switch to the University of Arizona, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in the year 1965. After working a variety of occupations that included being a garment salesman and a short-order chef, Rivera eventually enrolled in the Brooklyn Law School in 1966.

Before graduating near the top of his class with a J.D. in 1969, he completed his legal education by working as an intern for the New York County District Attorney’s office under the leadership of crime fighter Frank Hogan and for Harlem Assertion of Rights, a community-based organization that provides legal services. After that, during the summer of 1969, he participated in the Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship in Poverty Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Later that year, he was accepted into the New York State Bar Association.

Rivera became a frequent attorney for the New York City chapter of the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican activist group, based in East Harlem after working for organizations such as Community Action for Legal Services and the National Lawyers Guild, both of which are located in lower Manhattan. This eventually led to Rivera’s entry into private practice. Before that, Rivera worked for organizations such as these.

When Rivera was being interviewed about the group’s occupation of a neighborhood church in 1969, this work caught the attention of WABC-TV news director Al Primo. Rivera was discussing the occupation of the church. Primo made an offer to Rivera to work for him as a reporter, but he was uncomfortable with the first name “Gerald” since he wanted something more identifiably Latino. As a result, the two of them came to an agreement to adopt the pronunciation used by the Puerto Rican side of Rivera’s family, which is Geraldo.

As a result of Rivera’s lack of prior experience in the field of journalism, ABC made arrangements for him to participate in the Ford Foundation-funded Summer Program in Journalism for Members of Minority Groups at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in the year 1970. Rivera studied basic broadcast journalism under the tutelage of Fred Friendly. Rivera began working as a reporter for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in the year 1970 after being hired by the station.

In 1972, he became the subject of widespread media coverage and was awarded a Peabody. for his report on the neglect and abuse of patients with intellectual disabilities at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School and Rockland County’s Letchworth Village, and he started to appear on ABC national programs such as 20/20 and Nightline upon their launches in 1978 and 1979 respectively.

For his report on the neglect and abuse of patients with intellectual disabilities at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School and Rockland County’s Letchworth Village. After John Lennon watched Rivera’s report on the patients at Willowbrook, he and Rivera put on a benefit performance called “One to One” on August 30, 1972, at Madison Square Garden in New York City (which Yoko Ono released posthumously in 1986 as Live in the City). The concert was named after Rivera’s documentary about the patients at Willowbrook.
