Felix Kammerer is a well-known Austrian actor who was born on September 19th, 1995. In the 2022 German language adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, in which he made his debut on the big screen as Paul Baumer, the story’s major character and the central protagonist, he was praised for his performance. Kammerer’s parents are the opera singers Angelika Kirchschlager and Hans Peter Kammerer.
Between the years of 2013 and 2015, Kammerer was a member of the Youth Ensemble which was directed by Maresa Horbiger. His academic career at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts Berlin began in 2015, and he is expected to graduate in 2019. In the course of his training, he performed at the Berliner Arbeiter-Theater in Rossum’s Universal Robots by Karel Apek and in Michael Kohlhaas – An Attempt to Leave the Circle, which was freely adapted from Heinrich von Kleist. In 2017, he made his stage debut at the Deutsche Theater Berlin in Marat/Sade, which was directed by Stefan Pucher.
In 2019, Kammerer made his debut in part of the student Simin in Maxim Gorki’s production of Summer Guests at the Salzburg Festivals. Youth Without God was directed by Nurkan Erpulat and performed at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Martin Kuej brought Kammerer to Vienna’s Burgtheater as a permanent ensemble member.
There, he made his debut as Schiller’s Don Karlos in the role of the Duke of Medina-Sidonia. Kammerer starred in Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov as Behemoth in a production directed by Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo at the Vienna Academy Theater in October 2019, and The Little Witch by Otfried Preußler premiered in the Vestibule of the Burgtheater in November 2019. Both productions were directed by Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo.
In the world premiere of Elfriede Jelinek’s play Schwarzwasser, which was performed at the Akademietheater in February 2020, Kammerer starred alongside Caroline Peters, Christoph Luser, and Martin Wuttke. The piece touches on a variety of topics, including the Ibiza incident, and it was directed by Elfriede Jelinek. In October 2020, he portrayed the emperor’s footman in the production of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes that took place at the Kasino on Schwarzenbergplatz.
In the dramatic adaption of Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain that made its debut at the Burgtheater in January 2023, Kammerer made his debut performance as Hans Castorp. Kammerer made his debut on the silver screen in 2022, playing the lead part of Paul Baumer in Edward Berger’s German-language translation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front.
The film was directed by Berger. Berger was in the process of casting for the role of Baumer when Sabrina Zwach, the wife of the film’s producer, Malte Grunert, suggested that Kammerer be considered for the part. The performance that Kammerer did at the Burgtheater left Grunert with such a strong impression on him that he immediately offered him an audition and made a personal recommendation to Berger. Berger said that he was impressed by the fact that Kammerer’s face “was already so old-fashioned and so classic looking, so pure and so innocent” when he saw it for the first time. They kept casting over the next four to five months, and Berger said:
I observed some 500 young actors. And we extended repeated invitations to Felix to visit us. And with each performance, he improved his already impressive level of performance, clearly maturing into the part. At one point, it became quite evident that he had to be the one responsible. It truly was a groundbreaking discovery. The performance that Kammerer gave in “All Quiet on the Western Front” has garnered a lot of appreciation from critics. In her article for Collider, Maggie Lovitt noted, “In his first performance on screen, Kammerer proves himself to be a promising newcomer on the global stage.”
The part of Paul Baumer is not an easy one to play; the physical of the role alone might be enough to break an actor, and that’s not even taking into consideration the significant emotional toll that must be taken in order to convey the disgrace, depravity, and anguish of war. Paul is the film’s emotional center, and Kammerer deftly lays bare his soul for the audience as the conflict continues to sap his character’s strength.
His performance was characterized as “hugely impactful even when caked in mud” by John Nugent of Empire (magazine). Danny Leigh of The Financial Times calls Felix Kammerer a “remarkable newcomer,” while Kate Connolly of The Guardian writes that “Baumer is tenderly and brilliantly played by newcomer Felix Kammerer.” “Kammerer may be a newcomer, but his performance is nuanced and chilling in equal measures,” writes Justin Chang for IGN. Baumer isn’t just in over his head; every second of life on the front lines has him anxiously fighting to catch his breath.
He can’t even begin to comprehend what’s going on. Kammerer catches each and every moment with the same excruciating depth that he wears on his sleeve throughout the entire piece. This incredibly great performance depicts the pain of a young soldier being forced to confront every dread that they can possibly imagine. Baumer is being watched closely as each passing second causes him to become further removed from the young man he once was. At the Nestroy Theatre Awards in 2022, he received the Nestroy in the Best Young Male category for his performance as Luke in Lucy Kirkwood’s Mosquitoes at the Akademietheater in Vienna. This was in recognition of his performance in the play.
It was announced in January 2023 that Kammerer would be featured on the longlist for the best actor category for the 76th British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards for his performance in All Quiet on the Western Front. The award was given out by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. At the 73rd German Picture Awards, which were held last year, Kammerer earned the award for best actor for his performance in the same picture.
