Donovan Patton Bio

Donovan Patton is a well-known American actor and television host. He was born on March 1, 1978, in the United States. Before succeeding Steve Burns as the host of Nickelodeon’s long-running children’s television program Blue’s Clues in 2002, Patton earned a diploma from the Interlochen Arts Academy and performed in Shakespeare plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing. Patton brought Joe, his character, closer to the preschool viewer, according to Angela Santomero, who is a co-creator of the series.

Angela explained that this was because Joe was more inclined to “jump into a problem rather than figuring it out first like Steve.” After the conclusion of Blue’s Clues in 2006, Patton went on to voice Bot on Nickelodeon’s Team Umizoomi (which aired from 2010 to 2015). Currently, Patton voices CatRat on the original DreamWorks series Gabby’s Dollhouse, which airs on Netflix. He also makes special cameos in the new series Blue’s Clues & You!

Patton has appeared in a number of indie films and television shows, including Blue Bloods (2011), Nurse Jackie (2011), and Damages (2012), despite the fact that the majority of his career has been spent working in children’s television programs. These films include Black Wine (2005), Awake (2013), Lies I Told My Little Sister (2014), The Broken Ones (2017), The Murder (2019), The Anniversary (2019), Psycho Escort (2020), and DieRy (2020).

In addition, he has made an appearance in a number of video games, including Grand Theft Auto V (2013), Lego Jurassic World (2015), Star Wars: The Old Republic – Knights of the Fallen Empire (2015), Halo 5: Guardians (2015), Horizon: Zero Dawn (2017), and God of War (2018). Patton was born on a military installation in Guam, the territory of the United States of America, to parents Michael Patton (born 1951), a meteorologist with the United States Air Force, and Darlene Curtis (born 1952), an employee of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Casey is his older brother, while Annabelle is his younger half-sister. He also has a younger half-brother. When he was three years old, his parents separated, and he, his brother, and their mother all went to Colorado together. When Donovan was 12 years old, the family made the move to Las Vegas. After transferring there during his junior year, Patton completed his education at the Interlochen Arts Academy in northwest Michigan and received his diploma in 1996.

His earliest performing jobs were in Shakespeare’s plays, including Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing, among others. While he worked a variety of odd jobs in Manhattan, including being a book clerk and a video deliveryman, he attended acting training. The “big break” for Patton came in the fall of 2000 when he was cast to succeed Steve Burns as Joe, the second host of the Nickelodeon children’s television program Blue’s Clues. Patton took over for Burns, who had been with the show from its inception.

Patton was a waiter and an actor on the side when he lived in Williamsburg, which is located in the borough of Brooklyn in the state of New York. At the time, he was supposed to play a role in Blair Witch Project 2, but he considered the part of Joe to be “a happy accident” when it came his way instead. Patton is now considered a “household name”  and has been described as “an unqualified star to the 5-and-under set and their parents.”

In order to be considered for the part, he was put through “the same kind of scrutiny” as Burns, who was engaged in Patton’s selection and helped train him. Burns also helped him prepare. Patton was chosen for the role out of 1,500 other applicants. Prior to his audition, he had never watched the show, but just like Burns, he was the favorite among test audiences comprised of preschoolers. When asked about how he landed the role, he stated, “I am convinced that I got that part because of a Christopher Walken impression I sometimes do.”

During the screen test, Steve Burns and I pretended to be Christopher Walken while acting out a scene from Blue’s Clues. Somewhere, there is a tape of the two of us performing the scene. I have not watched the tape, but I am certain that it is still in circulation someplace. When it came time for Patton to take over as host, Burns prepared him for the role by teaching him not to “think of [the show] as children’s TV,” but rather as “acting and telling the truth.”

He also gave Patton some words of advice. Burns departed the show in January 2001, and the transition episodes were broadcast in April 2002. Patton and Burns both made an appearance in the pilot episode of the 2019 revival of Blue’s Clues & You!, in which they reprised their roles as Joe and Steve, respectively, to instruct their cousin Josh (who was portrayed by Joshua Dela Cruz) on how to properly care for Blue.

Patton’s character was described as being more like a preschooler and more naïve than Steve by one of the show’s producers and creators, Traci Paige Johnson. Another producer and creator, Angela Santomero, noted that Patton’s portrayal of Joe brought him closer to the audience of preschoolers since Joe was more inclined to “jump into a problem rather than figure it out first like Steve.” Patton enjoyed working on the children’s television show Blue’s Clues because, as he put it, “I got to go be a kid for twelve hours a day.”

When he first started working on the show, he described the cast and crew as “a real fun little family”  and a “well-oiled machine”. Patton continued to appear on the show for a total of fifty episodes until its cancellation in 2006. He also had an appearance in the show’s spin-off, Blue’s Room, which made its debut in the year 2004. A number of years later, Patton stated that he had not yet comprehended the gravity of replacing Burns, even after he became a parent and witnessed the show’s effect on his own children. He stated that this was the case even though he had witnessed the show’s effect on his own children. He stated that the Steve episodes were more entertaining to him when his daughter watched them.
