Diana Krall Bio

Diana Jean Krall OC OBC is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer best recognized for her contralto voice. She was born on November 16, 1964, in Ontario, Canada. Over the course of her career, she has moved more than 15 million albums all over the world, including over six million in the United States alone. As of the 11th of December in 2009, Billboard magazine ranked her as the second greatest jazz performer of the decade (2000–2009), thereby establishing her as one of the most successful musicians of her era in terms of record sales.

Krall is the only jazz singer to have ever achieved this feat, with all eight of his albums making their debut at number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. She is a winner of three Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards at this point in her career. In addition, she has nine gold albums, three platinum albums, and seven multi-platinum albums to her name. Krall was born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Her mother, Adella A. (née Wende), was an elementary school teacher, and her father, Stephen James “Jim” Krall, was an accountant. Krall’s paternal grandparents were also elementary school teachers. Michelle, Krall’s one and only sibling is a veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), where she served for many years. Krall’s mother was a member of a community chorus, while Krall’s father was a pianist who played at home. Krall began her own education in piano when she was just four years old and went on to take tests via the Royal Conservatory of Music.

She was part of a student jazz group while she was in high school, and at the age of 15, she started playing professionally at local restaurants. Krall was awarded a scholarship that allowed her to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1981 through 1983. After graduating from Berklee, she spent some time in Los Angeles honing her jazz playing skills. In 1992, she went back to her home country of Canada to record her debut album.

Stepping Out, Krall’s debut album was recorded for Justin Time Records in 1992, and the album was finally released the following year in 1993. She was performing with a bassist named John Clayton and a drummer named Jeff Hamilton. It drew the attention of producer Tommy LiPuma, who went on to produce her second album, which was titled Only Trust Your Heart and was released in 1995.

Her third album, which was released in 1996 and was titled All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, was nominated for a Grammy and was on the Billboard jazz charts for a total of 70 weeks. Love Scenes (1997), which featured Krall, Russell Malone (guitar), and Christian McBride (bass), shot to the top of the charts almost immediately after its release.

In August of 2000, Krall teamed up with Tony Bennett on a tour that included 20 cities. In 2008–2009, the two artists collaborated once more on a song that was featured on the television series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… When I Look in Your Eyes (1999), her fifth studio album and her first release on Verve Records, featured orchestral arrangements performed by Johnny Mandel. When I Look in Your Eyes was also her debut studio album.

It was decided to keep the band mix and follow the arrangements that Claus Ogerman had created for The Look of Love (2001). This record was certified platinum and made it into the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s title track, a remake of the Casino Royale standard made popular in the late 1960s by Dusty Springfield and Sérgio Mendes, reached number 22 on the adult contemporary chart. The original version of the song was popularized by Sérgio Mendes and Dusty Springfield.

Krall embarked on a tour of the world in September 2001. Her performance at the Paris Olympia was captured on record and presented to the public in the form of her first live record, titled Live in Paris (although it was distributed in Europe under the name A Night in Paris). Covers of songs such as Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” (which was a smash on smooth jazz radio in the United States) and Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” were featured on the album, which was also published as a video album.

“I’ll Make It Up As I Go” is the title of a recording that Diana Krall contributed to the film “The Score,” which was released in the United States and Germany in 2001 and starred Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando. David Foster, a fellow Canadian, is responsible for the composition of this song, which plays throughout the closing credits of the movie (chapter 12).

After becoming married to the English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello in 2003, Diana Krall began working with him as a lyricist and writing her own songs, which led to the creation of the album The Girl in the Other Room. After its initial release in April 2004, it immediately climbed to the top five of the album rankings in the United Kingdom and made it into the top 40 album charts in Australia.

She also collaborated with Ray Charles on the song “You Don’t Know Me,” which appeared on the album Genius Loves Company, which was published in 2004. The performance that she gave at the Bell Centre in Montreal on June 29, 2004, was recorded and released as her second live CD and DVD under the title Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival on November 23, 2004.

At the end of May 2007, Krall was featured in an advertisement campaign for Lexus. In the same year, she also contributed her rendition of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” to the “all-star” tribute album We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song (2007), which was produced by Phil Ramone. Hank Jones provided the piano accompaniment for this track. The album Quiet Nights, which Krall and Tommy LiPuma created and released on March 31, 2009, had a majority of bossa nova staples as its track listing. Love Is the Answer, an album recorded by Barbra Streisand and produced by Krall, was released on September 29, 2009.

In 2011, Krall took some personal time off and traveled to Sri Lanka. She participated in a live performance of Paul McCartney’s album Kisses on the Bottom in September 2012 at Capitol Studios, which was broadcast live on the internet. The performance was televised in real-time. At the memorial service held in Washington, District of Columbia, on September 13, 2012, Krall played “Fly Me to the Moon” for the late astronaut Neil Armstrong.
