William Fraser Dea is a Canadian hockey legend who played center in the National Hockey League (NHL) and currently serves as a head coach in the league. He was born on April 3, 1933. He was a player in the National Hockey League from 1953 to 1971, after which he became a coach for the 1981–1982 season.
Dea was a standout in the lower leagues before beginning his career in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers in the 1953–54 season for a total of fourteen games. On August 18, 1955, the Rangers made a deal with the Detroit Red Wings to acquire Bronco Horvath and Dave Creighton in exchange for the National Hockey League (NHL) rights to Dea and Aggie Kukulowicz.

Before getting a second chance to play in the National Hockey League as a result of expansion, Dea spent the following nine years competing solely in the American Hockey League. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins on a consistent basis throughout the 1967–1968 and 1968–1969 seasons.
After that, he went back to the Red Wings for a further two years, finishing his career with a total of 397 games played, 67 goals scored, and 54 assists. In 1975, Dea accepted a position with the Red Wings as an assistant coach. After Dea retired, he became a member of the Detroit front office staff. As a midseason replacement for Wayne Maxner during the 1981–1982 NHL season, he was promoted to the position of head coach for the team. He is currently working for the Florida Panthers as a member of their scouting staff.

After playing in every game for the Bisons for the next eight seasons, Dea broke Bill Needham’s league record for the most consecutive games played in an Ironman contest on Christmas night in 1965. On February 12, 1966, Dea was finally unable to play in a game, putting an end to his incredible streak of 548 consecutive games (plus 48 more in the playoffs) — a record that may never be surpassed.
As a hard-working and well-liked winger, Dea had his most prolific offensive season in 1960-1961, when he set career highs with 35 goals and 74 points. During this season, he also established new personal bests in both categories. In 1962, with his assistance, the Bisons made it all the way back to the league championship series, and in 1963, he was an essential cog in the Bisons’ machine that won the Calder Cup. During his time with the Buffalo Sabres, Dea scored more than 20 goals per season and reached the 50-point barrier six times during his time there. After concluding his playing career with the Tidewater Wings of the American Hockey League in 1971-1972, he returned to the NHL and played for Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Detroit.
