Bethany Jane Mead MBE is an English professional footballer who was born on May 9, 1995. She currently plays as a forward for Arsenal, which competes in the Women’s Super League (WSL), as well as for the England national team. She is a forward who is both creative and productive, and she holds the record for the most assists and the second-most goals contributed in the history of the WSL.
She led England to victory in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, when she won the Golden Boot, was named Player of the Tournament, and led the tournament in assists, becoming the first player in England’s history to win a major tournament. Later on in that year, she was given the title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year, making her the first woman’s footballer to win the coveted award; she also came in second place for the Ballon d’Or and UEFA Player of the Year awards.
Mead became the youngest player to ever win the WSL Golden Boot in 2015 when she was only 20 years old. She also went on to win the WSL Player of the Year title that same year. It had only been one year since she led her last team, Sunderland, to promotion and victory in the WSL 2 title match. Due to the fact that she participated in 78 games and scored 77 goals, she is considered to be one of the best players that Sunderland has ever had.
Mead, who played as a winger for Arsenal before switching positions, is the current holder of a number of playmaking records in the Women’s Super League. These marks include the all-time most assists, the most assists in a season, the most opportunities created in a season, and the most chances created from open play in a season. During the 2018–19 and 2021–22 seasons, she has the most assists in the Women’s Super League. During the 2021–2022 season, she was one of the players who was considered for the WSL Player of the Season award. She led Arsenal to a championship in the 2018–19 WSL season.
Mead assisted England in their run to the semifinals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, during which she has the second-most assists of any player in the competition. She won the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award as well as the World Soccer World Player of the Year award in 2022 after breaking Jimmy Greaves’ 61-year-old record for the most goals scored in a season by an England player of either gender. This record stood for the most goals scored in a season by an England player. In recognition of her contributions to football over the years, she was awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year’s Honours List of 2023.
In February of 2022, Mead and Teesside University, where she received her education, established the Beth Mead Scholarship. In November of 2022, her autobiography, titled Lioness: My Journey to Glory, was released. This book was a Sunday Times bestseller. Mead spent her childhood in the little community of Hinderwell, which is located close to Whitby. She has characterized her hometown as “a fishing town in the middle of nowhere, with a population of about 2,000.” the number of people is significantly outnumbered by the number of sheep. You are familiar with the type: there are a lot of fields, two pubs, and a hairdresser, but the grocery store is about a mile away.
When Mead was six years old, she first picked up a football and started playing. Her mother took her to a Saturday morning football practice in Hinderwell that was being held by a volunteer coach because she wanted her daughter to burn off some of her limitless energy. The session took place on a village field. He told her and her mother, “It’s wonderful that you’re going down to get involved, but you will be the only girl here. It’s fine that you’re coming down to be involved. They are rather tough, so I’m concerned about her safety.
The response from her mother was, “She’ll be fine.” However, when her mother returned an hour later, he told her that Mead was harsher than the majority of the lads in the group. She made sure to spend as much time as she could with the boys in the neighborhood in that overgrown common field, and she did so regardless of whether or not there were any animals present or how long the grass was.
Mead tried her hand at a variety of sports, such as cross-country running, field hockey, cricket, and netball; nevertheless, “football always hit [her] different.” She shared her thoughts, stating, “I loved what I was doing on the pitch and had no other worry in the world — nothing else mattered except for me kicking that football.” Football is my first and only real love; it will always be my number one sport. Even now, it occasionally manages to crush my heart, but I know that’s just a part of the game.
Even now, doing nothing but jogging around on a football field while reveling in the activity is how I unwind. This has been the same from the time I was a young child six years old till the present time when I am a young adult of 27 years. There was a player missing from Mead’s local senior cricket team one day. She decided to participate for the day and ended up catching two of her brother’s bowling balls. The event was referred to in the regional publication as “The Mead Show.”: Ch. 2
Mead received their primary education at the Oakridge Community School in Hinderwell. She had to play for the boys’ football team because there was no girls’ football team at her school. She was the lone female in the group. On the other hand, the more she played, the more interest there was from the other girls to join in. Because she had been accepted and chosen to lead the team at her elementary school, the other girls found it easier to relax when they saw that she had been given the role of captain.
They had four girls on the team, yet they still managed to win the local primary school cup for boys’ teams. At the age of nine, Mead started her youth career with the California Boys FC and the Middlesbrough Center of Excellence. During the period that her daughter was playing for the Middlesbrough Academy, her mother took on a second job to assist in defraying the expense of the gasoline required for the twice-weekly, forty-five-minute commute.
When Mead played for California Boys FC in the boys’ league, the players and parents of the opposing teams would make jokes about the fact that she was a girl when they saw her turn up for games. Her teammates used to yell at the opposing team before the game started, telling them to make fun of themselves since they knew that as soon as the game began, she would be able to outrun them easily.
She didn’t care about either of those things since her father had informed her, “While some people will always have opinions, and you would hear a few things, you don’t need to say anything, and neither do I–your football will do the talking.” She garnered a lot of respect from the other teams and the parents of the players on those teams after most of the games since she played well and gave it her all.
Mead scored a triple trick against Sunderland, one of the finest teams in England at the time, when she was just 13 or 14 years old and playing for the Middlesbrough Academy. She did this in just six or seven minutes. As soon as she became 16, the manager of Sunderland at the time, Mick Mulhern, visited with her together with her parents to discuss signing her with Sunderland. She was a legitimate goalscorer, with either foot, from anywhere on the field, according to Mulhern. When you consider someone at such a young and impressionable age, the fact that I was so determined to sign her reveals both what I thought of her back then and what I anticipated she would become in the future.
