Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on July 18, 1997, and his full name is Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo (/dba.o/ AH-deh-BY-oh). Before being chosen by the Heat with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, he was a collegiate basketball player for the Kentucky Wildcats.

He has been selected to the NBA All-Star Game twice, and he has been named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team four times. Additionally, he was instrumental in the Heat’s run to the NBA Finals in both 2020 and 2023. In addition, he was a member of the United States Olympic team that took gold in Tokyo in 2020.

In Newark, New Jersey, Adebayo was born to a Nigerian Yoruba father and an African-American mother. His mother’s family is from the United States. When he was a child, his mother gave him the moniker “Bam Bam” after he overturned a coffee table in a manner that was similar to the method in which the character Bamm-Bamm Rubble did it on The Flintstones when he was only one year old and was watching the show.

At the age of seven, Adebayo relocated to North Carolina with his mother. He has lived there ever since. He went to high school in Pinetown, North Carolina, at the Northside High School, where he recorded an average of 32.2 points and 21 rebounds per game as a junior. This past summer, Adebayo played for his Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, Team Loaded North Carolina, alongside another five-star prospect for the 2016 class, Dennis Smith Jr. During the Adidas Uprising Circuit, he recorded an average of 15.0 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Towards the end of that summer, Adebayo participated in the NBPA Top 100 Camp and was honored as the Most Valuable Player during the 2015 Under Armour Elite 24 game. Following the completion of his junior year at Northside, he made the decision to enroll at High Point Christian Academy, which is located in High Point, North Carolina. Adebayo’s first game of the season was a victory over New Garden Friends School by a score of 81–39, and he finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

On December 29, he led Cypress Lakes High School and De’Aaron Fox to a victory with 26 points scored and 14 rebounds grabbed. The final score was 91–63. During his senior season, Adebayo led the Cougars to a berth in the NCISAA state championship game, where he recorded averages of 18.9 points, 13.0 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 1.5 assists per game. He also led the team in scoring. Adebayo was awarded the title of Mr. Basketball for the state of North Carolina in 2016. He participated in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game as well as the Jordan Brand Classic in January of that same year.

Adebayo was given a rating of five stars as a recruit and was regarded as one of the most promising high school prospects of the 2016 class. It was determined that he was the fifth-best overall recruit and the second-best power forward in the high school class of 2016. Adebayo announced his intention to attend the University of Kentucky on November 17, 2015. He joined his classmates Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox, and Wenyen Gabriel in their first year of college. Adebayo led Valparaiso to an 87–67 victory on December 7, 2016, and he finished the game with 16 points and seven rebounds. Adebayo led Missouri to a 72–62 victory on February 21, 2017, thanks to his performance in which he scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Kentucky would advance to the semifinals of the SEC tournament as the top seed by claiming victory over Georgia in the quarterfinals and then prevailing over Alabama in the championship game. On March 12, 2017, the Wildcats defeated the Razorbacks 82–65 to win the SEC Championship. Adebayo contributed to the victory by grabbing nine rebounds. Adebayo led his team to victory against Northern Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 17. He had 18 rebounds in the game, which his team won 79–70. During Kentucky’s victory over Wichita State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Adebayo pulled down 10 rebounds to contribute to the Wildcats’ success.

Adebayo pulled down 12 boards during Kentucky’s Sweet Sixteen victory over UCLA on March 24. He was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Adebayo participated in the Elite Eight game against North Carolina on March 26, scoring 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds in a loss by the score of 75–73. Following his elimination in the Elite Eight, on April 5 he announced that he would be entering the 2017 NBA draft. Twenty days later, on May 20, he signed with an agency. During the 2016–17 season, Adebayo played 38 games for Kentucky and averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. As a result of his performance, he was named to the Second team of All-SEC and to the SEC All-Freshman team.

Adebayo was chosen by the Miami Heat on June 22nd, 2017, as the 14th overall choice in the 2017 NBA draft. This took place on June 22nd. On July 1, he joined the Heat after signing a rookie scale contract with the team[19] and participating in the 2017 NBA Summer League with them. Adebayo made 69 appearances for the Heat during his first season in the NBA and averaged 6.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in those contests.

Adebayo’s performance against the Toronto Raptors on November 25, 2018, was highlighted by a career-high 21 rebounds and 16 points. The game ended in a loss, 125–115. Adebayo led the Sacramento Kings to a victory over the Phoenix Suns by scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on December 7. In a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on December 28, he led his team to a 118–94 victory with 18 points scored. Adebayo participated in each and every one of the 82 games and averaged 8.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
