Angus Young Bio

Angus McKinnon Young is an Australian musician who was born on March 31, 1955. He is most known for his roles as co-founder, lead guitarist, and songwriter for the hard rock band AC/DC. Young is also the only original member of the band who is still active. He is well-known for his high-energy performances, stage attire that resemble schoolboy uniforms, and his own rendition of the Duckwalk made famous by Chuck Berry. On Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 best guitarists of all time, Neil Young was placed at number 24. In 2003, Young and the other members of AC/DC were recognized for their contributions to the music industry by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In the 1950s, Young’s father, William Young (1911–1985), his mother, Margaret (1913–1988; her maiden name was also Young), and his elder seven siblings resided at 6 Skerryvore Road in the Cranhill neighborhood of Glasgow, which is located in Scotland. Cranhill was a difficult neighborhood that catered to the working class and had a high unemployment rate.

Before coming to Cranhill, William held jobs first as a wheel boy in a rope factory and then as a machine/saw operator in an asbestos/cement industry. Both of these positions were held before William’s relocation. William enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1940 and served as a flight engine mechanic in the United Kingdom during World War II. Following his service in the military, William found employment first as a yard man for a builder and later as a postman. Margaret was a stay-at-home mom.

Young was born and raised in Cranhill for the first seven years of his life. His siblings were named as follows: Margaret Crawford (1935-2019), John Crawford (1938-1997), Alexander Crawford (1938-1997), William Crawford (1940-2017), George Crawford (1946-2017), and Malcolm Crawford (1953-2017). His brother was named Stephen Crawford (1933-1989).

The lives of the family always included music.: 6–7  Stephen was a talented musician who could play the piano as well as the piano accordion. Young’s sister Margaret had a strong interest in music, John played the guitar, Alexander was a talented singer, bass guitarist, and saxophonist who moved to Europe in the early 1960s to pursue a career in music, and George and Malcolm eventually became founding members of the Easybeats and AC/DC, respectively. Stephen Young was the father of Stevie Young, who succeeded Malcolm Young as the lead singer of AC/DC in subsequent years.

Young taught himself to play the guitar after receiving only one lesson from Alexander when he was five or six years old. After that, he was entirely self-taught. In addition, Young learned how to fight on the rough streets of Cranhill, where he sometimes found himself in danger and was even hit by a car at one point. In late June of 1963, the Young family packed their belongings and boarded a plane bound for Sydney, Australia.

The previous winter in Scotland had been the coldest on record, and the Youngs had seen advertising on television offering financial assistance to families who wanted to immigrate to Australia. John moved to Australia without accompanying his parents and siblings, while Alexander remained the lone child to live in the UK once the family moved there.: 6–7 Brother George met and became friends with another migrant, Harry Vanda, when they were both sleeping in Nissen huts at the Villawood Migrant Hostel (a location that was later established as the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre). This friendship eventually blossomed into both of them pursuing successful careers in music.

The Young family found a new home in the Sydney district of Burwood, in a semi-detached house located at number 4 Burleigh Street. Young went to Burwood Public School from 1960 to 1966 before transferring to Ashfield Boys High School in 1967, where he stayed until he was 15 years old and then dropped out. During his time in high school, Young’s main true passion was painting studies. After school, he went straight to his room to work on his guitar playing.

After graduating from high school, Young pursued a career in a variety of fields, including working night shifts in a butcher shop. After that, he started working as an apprentice printer. During the course of one week, the print shop where Young was employed became the temporary home of a pornographic magazine known as Ribald. Despite what some people have said, Young was never employed by that magazine. However, he did set some type for it.

When Young initially began playing, he used a banjo that had been modified to include six strings. When Young was young, his mother found a used acoustic guitar at a garage sale and bought it for him. This was his first guitar. Young purchased his first Gibson SG in the year 1970 second-hand from a music shop just down the street from his house. He had just graduated from high school and received his first paycheck at the time. “I got out and got a Gibson SG that I played until it got wood rot because so much sweat and water got into it,” Young said.

The neck as a whole twisted. I believe I paid somewhere around 1967 for it when I acquired it used. It had a neck that was extremely thin and narrow, much like a custom neck. It was a deep chocolate color.”Young and Malcolm were both members of the Marcus Hook Roll Band, which was led by George and included Harry Vanda as George’s musical collaborator. Tales of Old Grand Daddy is the name of an album that was issued by the project in Australia.

Angus Young was a member of a regional band named Kentucky before he became a founding member of AC/DC. Bob McGlynn provided the vocals for Kantuckee, while Angus Young played the guitar, Jon Stevens played the bass, and Trevor James played the drums. After the band broke up, Mark Sneddon (vocals and guitar), Angus Young (guitar), Jon Stevens (bass), and Trevor James (drums) went on to form Tantrum with different members.

When Young and Malcolm created AC/DC in 1973, Young was only 18 years old. Dave Evans provided the vocals, while Young played lead guitar, Malcolm played rhythm guitar, Colin Burgess played drums, Larry Van Kriedt played bass guitar, and Young played lead guitar. The band was under contract to record with Albert Productions, the same company that was responsible for producing the Easybeats’ music.

The band’s first song, “Can I Sit Next To You Girl,” was re-recorded at a later time with Bon Scott serving as the vocalist for the band. Their sister Margaret came up with the idea of using the initials “AC/DC” for the band’s moniker when she noticed that the letters were printed on the back of her sewing machine.
