Andre Ward Bio

When he was nine, Andre Ward‘s father, Frank, took him to a boxing club. This was before Andre Ward became the best boxer in the world as measured pound-for-pound and before he won five world championships in weight classes that were very different.

He had no way of knowing that the boy would develop into one of the best amateur and professional fighters in the sport’s history. He had no way of knowing. He requested that Virgil Hunter, the trainer, educate his kid “to hit and not get hit.” More than delivering on his word, Hunter, now known as Ward’s Godfather, assisted in developing his student, helping him become one of the most proficient technicians in boxing.

Ward’s ability and skills were evident early in his great amateur career. Ward was known for his strong character and honesty outside the ring, while within the circle, he was known for his instincts as a fighter. He won every championship there is to win, capping it off with a gold medal in the light heavyweight class in the Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece, in 2004.

In the last ten years, American boxer Andre Ward was the only man to win an Olympic gold medal for his country, joining the ranks of greats such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Oscar De La Hoya. He often appears on HBO as a participant in the fights and as a member of the commentary team, where he provides insightful analysis.

On his first fight as a professional, which took place on December 18, 2004, he defeated Chris Molina by technical knockout in the second round at the Staples Center in a match broadcast live on HBO. Since then, he has won an additional 29 times, during which time he has amassed an ever-expanding following of devoted followers.

In 2009, Ward decided to participate in the highly recognized SHOWTIME Super Six World Boxing Classic with five other outstanding super middleweights.

Shortly after, he won the WBA Super Middleweight World Championship with a dominant performance against previous World Champion Mikkel Kessler in front of over 10,000 adoring fans at the Oracle Arena in his hometown of Oakland, California. This victory allowed him to accomplish his longtime ambition of becoming a world champion in boxing.

After that, he successfully defended his WBA championship three times by winning victories over Allan Green, Sakio Bika, and former World Champion Arthur Abraham. In each of these bouts, he could decisively beat his opponents. After defeating Arthur Abraham, Ward extended his winning run to thirteen years, starting in 1998.

His achievements in the Super Six culminated in a decisive victory against Carl “The Cobra” Froch in the Super Six final on December 17, 2011, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight lasted 12 rounds, and a unanimous decision decided the winner.

As a result of his win, Ward was awarded the super middleweight world championships from WBC and Ring Magazine, in addition to the highly coveted SHOWTIME Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup. Due to his overpowering achievements over top-flight opposition in 2011, Ward was awarded the title of Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association and all of the major media outlets.

Following a run through the Super Six like Ward’s, many fighters would have taken on a weaker opponent as their next challenge. However, the soldier now holding the title of Fighter of the Year decided to take on fellow World Champion Chad Dawson instead.

Dawson, a regular on the pound-for-pound list and the light heavyweight world champion faced Ward in a highly anticipated confrontation on September 8, 2012, in Oakland, shown on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.

World Championship Boxing aired the fight. The sold-out crowd at Oracle Arena was not let down by Ward, who ended Dawson’s war in the tenth round with a thoroughly dominating performance. The fan favorite from the hometown knocked Dawson out in three separate rounds on the way to adding the 26th win to his record.

After being sidelined for 14 months due to significant shoulder surgery, Ward made a victorious comeback to the boxing ring on November 16, 2013, defeating previously unbeaten challenger Edwin Rodriguez in a fight that took place at the Citizen’s Bank Arena in Ontario, California.

Ward’s victory was a convincing one. The super middleweight king gave the considerably bigger Rodriguez his first professional loss in front of boxing greats such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, and Roy Jones Jr., who was his boyhood hero.

The announcement that Ward had inked an exclusive promotional arrangement with Roc Nation Sports took place on January 9, 2015, and it marked the beginning of a new era in his boxing career.

Ward finally made his much-anticipated comeback to the boxing ring on June 20, 2015, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Two-time world Title Challenger Paul Smith was defeated by Ward through a decisive ninth-round technical knockout in a bout carried live on BET for the first time as the network’s first-ever boxing program. The arena was filled with celebrities, and a large audience saw the fight.

Ward announced that he would relinquish his WBA Super Middleweight World Championship in the autumn of 2015, shortly after signing a multi-fight contract with HBO. This was in preparation for Ward’s move up in weight to compete in the light heavyweight category.

On March 26, 2016, Ward made his highly publicized debut at 175 pounds against Cuba’s undefeated and IBF number one rated light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera in front of a frenzied crowd at Oracle Arena that included luminaries such as Michael B.

Jordan, Stephen Curry, Marshawn Lynch, and Draymond Green. The fight occurred in front of a crowd that included luminaries such as Michael B. Jordan, Stephen Curry, Marshawn Lynch, and Draymond Green.

Ward handled The battle well, and in the third round, he started to unravel his opponent when he got Barrera with a counter left hook and down him to the mat. Ward won the fight. The remainder of the battle was a piece of cake for Ward, who cruised to a decisive victory over Barrera using a unanimous decision.
