Lateef Williamson and Sharonda Sampson gave birth to Zion Williamson on July 6, 2000, in Salisbury, North Carolina. Lateef was a football defensive lineman at Darlington’s ‘Mayo High School’ and then at Salisbury’s ‘Livingstone College,’ a black Christian college. Sampson was a sprinter at ‘Livingstone’ and then went on to teach fitness and physical education to middle school students.
Williamson was named after Mount Zion, a biblical place near Jerusalem, by his mother.When Williamson was two years old, his family relocated to Florence, South Carolina. His parents separated when he was five years old, and his mother married Lee Anderson, a former basketball player with ‘Clemson University.’ His stepfather helped him improve point guard skills, while his mother coached him for the ‘Sumter Falcons’ in the ‘Amateur Athletic Union’ circuit, allowing him to play against players four years his senior.
Williamson joined the basketball team at Marion, South Carolina’s ‘Johnakin Middle School,’ where he was once again coached by his mother. He was also a point guard who only lost three games in two years.
Williamson was a soccer player and a football quarterback before turning to basketball.
Williamson represented ‘Spartanburg Day School’ as a freshman in 2015. It was at this point that he learned to dunk. He was named All-State and All-Region after averaging 24.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 3.3 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game. In Sumter, South Carolina, he also led his squad to victory in the ‘South Carolina Independent School Association’ (SCISA) state championship game and the ‘SCISA North-South All-Star Game.’ Williamson got his first basketball scholarship offer from Wofford College during his freshman year.
Williamson averaged 28.3 points, 10.4 assists, 3.9 blocks, and 2.7 seats per game as a sophomore in 2016. He was dubbed the ‘SCISA Region I-2A Player of the Year’ as a result of this. Williamson was the highest scorer at the ‘National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Top 100 Camp’ that same year. In New York City, he also won the ‘Under Armour Elite 24′ showcase dunk contest.
Williamson scored 36.8 points, 13 assists, 3 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game as a junior in the second half of 2016. He won the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award at the ‘Farm Bureau Insurance Classic’ in December after scoring 31 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Williamson scored 36.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game as a senior in the second half of 2017. He defeated ‘Hammond School,’ ‘Asheville Christian Academy,’ and ‘Greensboro Day School,’ but lost to ‘Christ School,’ and ‘Chino Hills High School.’
Williamson led ‘Spartanburg Day,’ to its third consecutive victory in the ‘SCISA Region I-2A’ championship, beating ‘Trinity Collegiate School,’ in early 2018. He also played in the 2018 McDonald’s All-American Game in the same year. Under the tutelage of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, he eventually accepted a basketball scholarship offer from ‘Duke University.’ One of his top three hires was Williamson.
