Bio

Zhou Xun is the son of Zhou Tianning and Chen Yiqin, who were both middle-class workers when Zhou Xun was born on October 18, 1974, in Quzhou, Zhejiang. While her mother worked as a salesman at a department store, her father was a local film projectionist in their hometown. She attended the Quzhou No. 1 Middle School during her academic career. Despite the fact that her parents encouraged her to get a degree from a university, she decided to pursue a career in the performing arts instead and enrolled in the Zhejiang Arts Institute instead.

Zhou Xun is one of the most popular Chinese actresses both critically and commercially, and she is best known for her roles in films such as “Perhaps Love” and Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. For almost twenty years, she has been at the helm of China’s film and television industries. She began her career in show business in the early 1990s by appearing in films and then expanding into television. Her breakthrough performance came in the film “Suzhou River,” which was also the name of the first television series that brought her attention: Palace of Desire.

The latter film catapulted her to global prominence and earned her the prize for Best Actress at the 15th annual Festival du Film de Paris. Zhou is recognized as one of China’s Four Dan Actresses because of her extensive body of work, which includes a number of critically acclaimed films both domestically and internationally, as well as television shows. These include, among others, movies such as “Suzhou River,” “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress,” “Painted Skin,” and “Painted Skin: The Resurrection,” as well as significant television programs like “The Legend of the Condor Heroes” and Red Sorghum.

She also devotes a significant amount of her time and energy to charitable work, which has resulted in her receiving several honors and awards, including the title of “first United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador for China” in 2008. Her breakthrough as an actress came in the early 1990s when she appeared in films such as “Old Grave”, “The Pampered Wife” (1995), and “Temptress Moon” (1996), amongst others. She made her debut in the television industry with the series ‘Hong Chu Fang’ in 1997.

This was followed by a few additional roles until she was cast as the youthful Princess Taiping in the Chinese television historical series ‘Palace of Desire. ‘ This was her first major part. At that year’s 18th China TV Golden Eagle Award ceremony, it was for this performance that she was awarded the Audience’s Choice for Actress as well as the award for Best Supporting Actress.

Her debut feature picture, ‘Suzhou River,’ which she wrote and directed in the year 2000, proved to be a critical and commercial success upon its release. The movie, in which she portrayed the dual characters of Mei Mei and Mou Dan, was favorably welcomed in other countries. It was for this performance that she was awarded the prize for Best Actress at the 15th Festival du Film de Paris. In addition, it brought her prominence on a global scale. In the year 2000, she was recognized alongside Xu Jingleias, Zhao Wei, and Zhang Ziyi as one of the “Four Dan Actresses.” This title indicated that these diva actresses were regarded as Mainland China’s four most bankable young actresses at the time.

She went on to star in more movies, such as “Beijing Bicycle” (2001), and television series, such as “April Rhapsody” (2000) and “Love Story in Shanghai” (2001), before appearing in “Hollywood Hong Kong,” which was her debut in the Hong Kong film industry. Her critical recognition stems from the film “Fruit Chan,” which she directed in 2001 and was distributed in 11 countries, including the United States of America, South Korea, Singapore, and Italy. In addition, she had an appearance in the French-Chinese romantic drama film “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress,” which was directed by Dai Sijie.

The film, which had its world debut at the 55th Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2002, was adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel written by Sijie in 2000 and had the same title. She went on to star in a number of other critically acclaimed films and television programs before landing the part of Sun Na in the Hong Kong musical film Perhaps Love. Despite the fact that this movie from 2005 was bombed at the box office, it was the closing picture at the Venice Film Festival in 2005 and was Hong Kong’s official submission for the best foreign film at the 78th Academy Awards ceremony in 2006.

Zhou received several accolades for her performance in the film “Perhaps Love,” which was directed by Peter Chan. The film was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards, the Golden Bauhinia Awards, the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award, and the Hong Kong Film Awards. She continued to enjoy success with notable films such as “The Banquet” (2006), “Ming Ming” (2007), and “The Equation of Love and Death” (2008), the latter of which garnered her Best Actress awards at the Chinese Film Media Awards, the Asian Film Awards, the Golden Rooster Film Festival, and the Shanghai Film Critics Awards.

After a period of time, the public began to refer to her as “Angel in the World” due to her power-packed and diverse performances, which were complimented by the success of her films. This elevated her to the position of being one of the most sought-after actresses in China. Her next film was a supernatural fantasy named “Painted Love,” which was released on September 25, 2008, in Hong Kong. The next day, it was released in China, where it established a new benchmark for films made in China. Due to her success at the box office, the Asia-Pacific Producers Network (APN) recognized her as the Asian Star of the Year in 2009. She received this honor in 2009.
