Victor Jay Garber, OC is a Canadian–American actor and singer who was born on March 16, 1949. His full name is Victor Jay Garber, OC. In recognition of his achievements on both the stage and the screen, he has been shortlisted for a total of six Primetime Emmy Awards, three Gemini Awards, and four Tony Awards. of the year 2022, he was honored with the title of Officer of the Order of Canada.

Broadway shows in which Garber originated roles include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979), Noises Off (1983), Lend Me a Tenor (1989), Arcadia (1995), and Art (1998). In recognition of his work in the humorous plays Lend Me a Tenor (1989) and Damn Yankees (1994), he has been shortlisted for four Tony Awards. His first nomination was in 1978 for his performance in the play Deathtrap, followed by nominations in 1982, 1982, 1989, and 1994 respectively.

In the 1973 film adaptation of the musical Godspell, he made his debut portraying Jesus Christ. Along with the casts of the critically acclaimed films Titanic (1997), Milk (2008), and Argo (2012), he has also been nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards, with the award for Argo (2012) being the one he took home. The films Sleepless in Seattle (1993), The First Wives Club (1996), Legally Blonde (2001), Sicario (2015), Dark Waters (2019), and Happiest Season (2020) are a few examples of other important films.

On television, Garber is most recognized for his role as Jack Bristow in the ABC series Alias (2001–2006), for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series three years in a row. Alias won the award all three years. He was nominated for more Emmys for his performance as Sidney Luft in the 2001 film Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows, as well as for his guest roles on the sitcoms Frasier (2001) and Will & Grace (2005).

Since then, he has become a member of the Arrowverse, where he plays the role of Martin Stein/Firestorm in the superhero television shows The Flash (2015–2017) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016–2017, 2021). Garber is of Russian and Jewish heritage, and he was born in London, which is located in Ontario, Canada. Joseph “Joe” Garber, his father, passed away in 1995, and his mother, Bessie Hope Wolf, passed away in 2005. Bessie Hope Wolf was an actress, singer, and host of the television show At Home with Hope Garber. He has a sibling named Nathan, and his sister’s name is Alisa.

In 1958, Garber began his acting career at the age of nine, and by the time he was 16, he was studying at the Hart House at the University of Toronto. He received his primary education at Ryerson Elementary School and his secondary education at London Central Secondary School. In addition, he participated in the children’s program offered by the Grand Theatre. When he was 16 years old, he was accepted into a summer theater training program offered by the University of Toronto and conducted by Robert Gill. The program lasted for six weeks.

He attended the HB Studio in New York City for his acting training. After performing as a solo folk performer for some time, he joined forces with Peter Mann, Laurie Hood, and Lee Harris to form a folk ensemble in 1967 and gave it the name The Sugar Shoppe. The trio achieved a level of success that was satisfactory, entering the Top 40 of the Canadian Singles Chart with their rendition of Bobby Gimby’s song “Canada” (1967). In 1967 and 1968, three other songs by Sugar Shoppe reached the bottom portions of the Canadian Top 100 singles chart. Prior to disbanding, the band had previously been on both “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

Jesus was performed by him in the production of Godspell that took place in Toronto in 1972. Other cast members were Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas, Paul Shaffer, and Martin Short. At the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in 1985, he was a part of the production of Noises Off. Garber took over for David Hyde Pierce in the role of Horace Vandergelder in the Tony Award–winning Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!, which was performed at the Shubert Theatre opposite Bernadette Peters in January of 2018. Before the official opening night for the press on February 22, Garber started putting on performances on January 20.

Garber was honored with the John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement presented by Theatre World in 2018. His early film work includes Godspell (1973) as Jesus (the role he originated in the 1972 Canadian stage production), as well as Sleepless in Seattle (1993), among other films. In the 1997 film Titanic directed by James Cameron, he played the role of shipbuilder Thomas Andrews and attempted to speak with a Mid-Ulster accent. Annie (1999), Legally Blonde (2001), and Tuck Everlasting (2002 are just a few of the other movies in which she has appeared).

In the DC Comics animated film Green Lantern: First Flight, which was released on home video in 2009, he voiced the part of the DC Comics supervillain Sinestro. Garber appeared as a Klingon interrogator in the Star Trek film directed by J. J. Abrams in the same year; however, the scenes he was in were cut from the final cut of the movie. In the 1996 film The First Wives Club, he played the role of film producer Bill Atchison, the husband of the character Elise Eliot, which was played by Goldie Hawn. The film also starred Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn.

In the film The Town, which was directed by Ben Affleck and released in 2010, Garber appeared as a bank manager in an uncredited appearance. Ice Quake was another film in which Garber had a role. Late in 2012, he made an appearance in the Ben Affleck film Argo, which is about the Iranian hostage crisis. Garber played the role of Canadian Ambassador to Iran Kenneth D. Taylor in the film. In addition, he has a role in the suspense film Big Game from 2014. The movie “They Shall Not Perish” from 2017 featured his narration.
