Vicki Lawrence was born Vicki Ann Axelrad in Inglewood, California, to Howard Axelrad and Anne Alene on March 26, 1949. She attended ‘Morningside High School,’ where she was a member of the ‘Young Americans,’ a musical group.
Lawrence appeared at the Oscars as part of the party and met notable figures such as Louis Armstrong and Johnny Mathis. She also gained experience touring with the band and appearing on ‘The Andy Williams Show,’ a popular television variety show.
Lawrence competed in a pageant called “Miss Fireball of Inglewood” during her senior year. Vicki Lawrence appeared remarkably similar to a young Carol Burnett, according to a local newspaper that covered the contest. Lawrence’s mother, Anne, encouraged her to write a letter to actress Carol Burnett as a result. Burnett called Lawrence’s father after receiving the letter and told him that she would be attending the Miss Fireball contest.
Burnett was looking for an actress to play her sister in “The Carol Burnett Show” at the time. Burnett auditioned Lawrence after meeting her at the contest and cast her as Chrissy in a series of sketches called “Carol and Sis,” which were part of “The Carol Burnett Show.”
Lawrence enrolled at ‘The University of California, Los Angeles’ when she was on the ‘Carol Burnett Show’ (UCLA). She did, however, drop out of university two years later to pursue her acting career. Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett eventually took Lawrence under their wing and taught her different skills. From 1967 to 1978, Vicki Lawrence portrayed a variety of characters on “The Carol Burnett Show.” Lawrence was the only cast member to remain on the show for all 11 seasons, apart from Burnett. Lawrence was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards for her role in “The Carol Burnett Show” from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. She received the ‘Primetime Emmy Award’ for ‘Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program’ in 1976.
She appeared in six episodes of ‘The Love Boat,’ an American comedy-drama television series, from 1978 to 1986. In the meantime, she joined the regular cast of the four-episode sketch comedy television show ‘Carol Burnett & Company,’ in which she played a variety of roles.
She made her television movie debut in 1982, when she was cast as Thelma Harper in the comedy-drama ‘Eunice.’ Lawrence had previously appeared on ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ as Thelma ‘Mama’ Harper. Her character Thelma Harper became so famous that she inspired a new television situational comedy series called “Mama’s Family.” From 1983 to 1990, she played Thelma Harper in the television series “Mama’s Family.”
She portrayed Nora Kingsley in the 1994 television film “Hart to Hart: Old Friends Never Die.” She landed the role of Natalie Warner in the situational comedy television series “Yes, Dear” in 2001. She appeared in seven episodes between 2001 and 2005 as the character. Lawrence was cast to play Margaret in a comedy TV series named “The Cool Kids” in 2018 after playing Angie Deltaliano in four episodes of the situational comedy series “Great News” that aired in 2017.
