Veronica Cartwright Bio

Veronica Cartwright is a well-known British-born American actress who was born on April 20th, 1949. She is well-known for her roles in both science fiction and horror films, and she has been honored with a great deal of acclaim, including three nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award. Angela Cartwright, who is much younger than her, is an actress. Both The Children’s Hour and The Birds featured young Cartwright in minor roles during her early years as an actor. However, it was the latter film that brought her initial financial success.

In the film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” which was released in 1978, she made her debut in more adult, mainstream roles. The following year, she appeared in the science-fiction horror thriller Alien, playing the role of Lambert, for which she received praise and a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also had roles in the films The Right Stuff and The Witches of Eastwick, both of which were well-received.

In the 1990s, she was nominated three times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. One of those nominations was for her role on ER, and the other two were for her role in The X-Files. Cartwright was born in Bristol, England, although she spent much of her childhood in Los Angeles, California because her family moved there shortly after the birth of her younger sister, Angela Cartwright, who is also an actor.

Her first part as a child actress was in the film “In Love and War,” which was released in 1958. Among her earliest roles, she played Beaver’s classmates Violet Rutherford and, subsequently, Peggy MacIntosh on the television series Leave It to Beaver. She also appeared in episodes of One Step Beyond titled “The Haunting” (1960) and The Twilight Zone titled “I Sing the Body Electric” (1962). In 1963, she appeared as a guest star in the episodes “The Silence of Good Men” and “My Name is Judith, I’m Lost, You See” of the NBC medical drama The Eleventh Hour, which was about psychiatry.

Both the films The Children’s Hour (1961) and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963), in which Cartwright acted, were commercially successful at the time they were released. Richard Deacon, who played her on-screen father in the television series Leave It to Beaver, was also part of the cast of The Birds, but the two of them did not appear on screen together. She had a role in the 1963 film Spencer’s Mountain, which also starred Henry Fonda and Kym Karath. She starred alongside Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, Darby Hinton, Ed Ames, and Dallas McKennon in the first two seasons of NBC’s Daniel Boone from 1964 through 1966.

During that time, she portrayed the role of Jemima Boone, Daniel Boone’s daughter. She was awarded a regional Emmy Award for her work in the television movie Tell Me Not in Mournful Numbers (1964), for which she was nominated. She had roles in the films Inserts (1974), Goin’ South (1978), and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), which led to her adult career in the film industry.

In the 1979 science-fiction horror picture Alien, starring Sigourney Cartwright, the protagonist Ellen Ripley was supposed to be played by Cartwright, but director Ridley Scott changed her role to that of Lambert just before filming began. This was Cartwright’s first major film role. The famed chest-burster scene in the movie contained a reaction that was genuine from Cartwright, who had not been notified in advance that there would be blood involved in the sequence;

Actor Tom Skerritt, who also starred in the movie, provided confirmation of this by stating, “What you saw on camera was the true answer. She was completely in the dark about all that had taken place. This matter arose out of nowhere all of a sudden.” As a result of her performance, she was awarded the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her later film roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Money Talks (1997), Scary Movie 2 (2001), Kinsey (2004), and Straight-Jacket (2004). Her first film performance was in The Right Stuff (1983). Again, she was considered for the Saturn Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in The Witches of Eastwick.

She is a frequent performer on television, having appeared in guest roles on shows like Route 66, Leave it to Beaver, The Mod Squad, Miami Vice, Baywatch, L.A. Law, The X-Files, Chicago Hope, Will & Grace, Touched by an Angel, Judging Amy, Six Feet Under, The Closer, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, among others. Cartwright has been nominated for an Emmy Award three times. In 1997, she was recognized for her work on ER, and in 1998 and 1999, she was recognized for her work on The X-Files. Cartwright was also included in the made-for-television movie Inside the Osmonds, playing the role of Mrs. Olive Osmond.

She has a starring role in the 2007 film adaptation of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers franchise titled The Invasion. She is depicted on the cover art for the single “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin'” by the Scissor Sisters, which was released in 2006, as well as on the band’s second studio album, titled Ta-Dah. In 2014, Cartwright revisited her role as Joan Lambert for downloadable content episodes in the video game Alien: Isolation, which was based on the first film, and she also had an appearance in the remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

Between the dates of July 8 and July 16, 2019, she appeared on General Hospital as the psychic Sibley Gamble. Her appearances spanned over two weeks. Among the many plays that Cartwright has been associated with on stage are Electra, Talley’s Folly, The Bat, and The Master Builder, all of which had overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Her winning performances in “The Hands of its Enemy,” “The Triplet Collection,” and “Homesteaders” earned her Drama-Logue Awards for Best Actress in each respective production.
