Ursula Burns, an American business executive, was the CEO (2009–16) and chairman (2010–17) of the multinational document-management and business-services firm Xerox Corporation. She was born on September 20, 1958, in New York, New York, United States. She was the first African American woman to serve as CEO of a Fortune 500 company, and the first female to succeed another female as CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
Burns grew up in a low-income housing estate on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Burns was the second of three children raised by a single mother who ran a home day-care centre and worked odd jobs including ironing and cleaning to help pay for her daughter’s education at Cathedral High School, a Roman Catholic preparatory school. Burns excelled in math and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn’s Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 1980. She started a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Columbia University the same year and worked for Xerox as a summer mechanical-engineering intern through the company’s graduate engineering programme for minorities, which paid for a portion of her education.
Burns joined Xerox as a full-time employee in 1981 after finishing his master’s degree and rapidly rose through the ranks of product creation. She rose through the ranks of management and engineering from 1992 to 2000, when she was named senior vice president of corporate strategic services, where she supervised production operations.
Burns was appointed president of Xerox in 2007 after the appointment enabled her to expand her leadership in the areas of global research, product growth, marketing, and delivery. She was elected CEO two years later, and chairman of the board in 2010.
