Although Tracy Chevalier was born in Washington, District of Columbia, she has spent her whole adult life in England. She can now claim citizenship in two countries. She attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English, and she attended the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, where she earned her Master of Arts in creative writing. She has an English husband and a son, and the three of them make their home in London.
She spent a number of years working as a reference book editor prior to devoting her entire career to writing. She is the author of seven different novels.
After completing her education at Oberlin College in Ohio and growing up in the nation’s capital, Tracy Chevalier relocated to England in 1984. She had the intention of studying abroad for just one semester but ended up staying for an entire academic year and never coming back. Chevalier decided to embark on a career as a writer in 1994 after spending several years working as a literary editor. She attended the University of East Anglia to earn a degree in creative writing at this time and finished the degree in 1994.
Chevalier was successful in accomplishing her goal, and one factor that contributed to this was the fact that the well-known Girl served as the story’s narrator. Griet, at sixteen years old, finds work as a maid in the chaotic household of the painter Vermeer. During this time, she forms an apprentice relationship with the artist, which attracts the interest of other men and the jealousy of women. The novel received a lot of praise. The New York Times Book Review said that Chevalier’s “search into the character of this sophisticated yet naive young woman is fascinating,” and that her description of 17th-century Delft is “marvelously evocative.” It was referred to as “vibrant and opulent” by the Wall Street Journal.
Chevalier has conducted previous research into the history before writing Girl with a Pearl Earring. Her first novel, The Virgin Blue, was released in the United Kingdom in 2001, and in it, her contemporary protagonist, Ella Turner, travels to 16th-century France to learn more about her ancestors. Because of this, she is able to draw comparisons between herself and a troubled ancestor, a lady whose destiny had been unknown until Ella discovered it. As a result, she draws similarities between herself and this ancestor.
Chevalier is known for her historical fiction. But, she has not been coy about the fact that the creation of her third novel, which she refers to as her “nightmare,” was more challenging than the process of writing Girl with a Pearl Earring. She has even said that she shed tears while working on it.
Chevalier felt the weight of the expectations placed on her by her prior achievements, and the fact that the first draft of her work was not going well contributed to her wanting to give up on the endeavor entirely. After then, Chevalier’s perspective shifted as a result of her study of The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
Chevalier immediately began revising her story, which was set in London during the early years of the 20th century and centered on two families. Also earning praise from reviewers for its vibrant and action-packed narrative is Falling Angels. Book magazine came to the conclusion that “This touching, melancholy book flaunts Chevalier’s skill for developing complicated characters and a compelling plot.
With her upcoming fourth book, which she is presently working on, Chevalier will continue to explore her interest in art as well as the history of many cultures. According to the Oberlin Alumni Magazine, she is planning to model the novel after the medieval tapestries titled “Lady and the Unicorn” that can be found in the Cluny Museum in France.
