Tom Rhodes is well known for his song “Alternative Country.” After moving to New York in 2003, he spent the following few years polishing his songwriting skills and releasing 2004’s self-titled debut as well as 2006’s No Apologies, which featured a wide variety of musical styles. Over the course of the subsequent few years, he would move many times, initially to North Carolina and then, in 2011, just prior to the publication of his third album, Better Son, to San Francisco. Both of these moves came just before the release of his respective albums. Rhodes’ music evolved during the course of his extensive touring in the United States and Europe, and by the time he released his fourth album, With or Without, in 2014, he was leaning toward a more stripped-down Americana style.
Because the entrance to the room was so close to the stage, the stand-up comic on stage made a joke about pulling Tom up on stage because he was wearing a Washington Redskins jacket. He conducted the interview with Tom as though he were the head coach of the Washington Redskins.
Tom committed the next few years of his life to writing jokes in a notepad, in the vain hope that one day he would get his big break. As a young boy, he would put on CDs with comedic greats like Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, and Rodney Dangerfield, and he would learn from the very best. When Tom was a student at Oviedo High School, it was common knowledge that he wanted to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. As a result, he frequently found himself in the role of emcee for events such as talent shows, pep rallies, and the morning and afternoon announcements.
One of Tom’s earliest supporters was the instructor who was responsible for both speech and theatre. Tom’s teacher encouraged him to hone the skills that came naturally to him. On a modest raised stage in the middle of the classroom, Tom would have the first five minutes of class to speak on whatever he chose to discuss, regardless of the topic. Tom would talk about current events, events that were happening at school, and any new jokes that he wanted to try out whether he was at home or at school. Because the rants were so amusing to listen to, children from other classes started sitting in on them.
At the early age of 17, Tom purchased a fake ID and attempted to try out for a spot at The Funny Farm, which was Orlando’s only comedy club at the time. Almost immediately after that, the individual started working frequently as a performer at The Funny Farm.
During his junior and senior years of high school, he appeared as a performer at a number of weekend events in the Orlando area as well as at a number of one-night stands located all across the state of Florida. After graduating from Oviedo High School in the same year and receiving his diploma, Tom immediately set out on the road to perform stand-up comedy in various locations across the Southeastern and Eastern United States.
At the age of 19, Tom was recognized as “The Funniest Person in Central Florida” by his peers and peers in the community. The grand prize consisted of an appearance at the famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles. Following Tom’s encounter with Jay Leno, who persuaded him that the best comedians should be headquartered in either New York or Los Angeles, Tom uprooted his life and moved to the Big Apple.
Tom claims that he spent a year living “like a dog” in the Washington Heights neighborhood. During that time, he had very little money and was unable to see too many sets in New York City because of this. Once he was safely back in Florida, he accepted defeat and broke up his one-night stands that he had been having in New Jersey and Long Island. He hung up his hat and went home with his head in his hands. After Tom moved back to Florida, his stand-up comedy career began to thrive, and he was soon invited to play at more famous venues across the country.
Tom performed as a headliner for the first time at a comedy club of the highest caliber for the first time at the Atlanta Punchline. After Atlanta’s example, a number of other prestigious clubs moved fast to take the lead. Tom moved to San Francisco, which he refers to as “the Jerusalem of stand-up comedy,” when he was 22 years old with the objective of cultivating and advancing his stand-up comedy career in that location.
