Thomas William Maxwell Latham is a New Zealand international cricketer who was born on April 2, 1992. He currently serves as the deputy captain of the New Zealand cricket team in both Test matches and One Day Internationals. It is his father, Rod Latham, who played cricket in the past. Among the amount of centuries scored by New Zealand openers in Test matches, he holds the record for the most.
Latham was a part of the New Zealand side that triumphed in the ICC World Test Championship contest between 2019 and 2021. He is mostly a batter, although he also plays wicket-keeping in international cricket. The Plunket Shield was the venue for his first-class cricket match, which he played for Canterbury in 2010. His first-class match was against Central Districts. As a result of his selection for the One-Day International series against Zimbabwe in 2012, he made his debut in the ODI format on February 3, 2012.
In February 2014, he made his debut in a test match against India. As a member of Canterbury, Latham has participated in every single version of the game. He spent the summer of 2013 playing in north-east England once again, this time for South Shields in the North East Premier League and Scotland in the Yorkshire Bank 40 tournament, which was the most important English List A competition in 2013. In addition, he made two further appearances for Durham’s second XI at that time.
During the summer, he was chosen for the visiting New Zealand Test team as well as the Twenty20 squad, and he participated in both of the Twenty20 internationals that were played during the trip. During the 2016 English season, Kent decided to bring in Latham as an overseas player. In May, he made his debut in the County Championship against Glamorgan at Canterbury. He struck half-centuries in both innings, making him the only Kent batsman in the history of the competition to accomplish this feat on his maiden outing.
After representing the county in all three forms of the game, Latham departed Kent in the middle of July to join the New Zealand squad in Zimbabwe. He had previously played for the county. In 2017, Latham signed a contract with Durham to play during the second half of the English cricket season. This contract was for an overseas player. During the year 2023, he joined Surrey and made his debut against Kent at Canterbury grounds.
In 2012, Latham made his debut in a one-day international against Zimbabwe, where he batted at number five and scored 24 runs. In his first Twenty20 International match, which took place on July 30 against the West Indies, he scored 15 and 19 runs throughout the series. Although Latham participated in the one-day international series of the tour, he could have made a more substantial contribution, with his best score being 32.
During the subsequent tour of Sri Lanka, he produced a match-winning 86 off 68 balls, which led to his return from the match against Bangladesh, when he first opened the batting and played a brilliant innings of 43. In February 2014, he played his first test match against India, and the match ended with him scoring 29 and 0 points. Next, in June, he went on a tour to the West Indies with New Zealand, where he participated in all three tests and two Twenty20 matches.
It was a very successful Test series for him, as he finished in second place on the list of best-run scorers for the series, only behind his colleague Kane Williamson. He scored three half-centuries and a total of 288 runs. By acting in this manner, he contributed to the success of his team in an international series. After a string of bad performances by the incumbents Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton, he had already secured the position of opener by the time July 2014 rolled around.
In the first test match he ever played, which took place in Abu Dhabi on November 11, 2014, he scored 103 runs, which was his first century. Latham was selected to play in the middle order of the batting order and to serve as Luke Ronchi’s backup wicket-keeper for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. This was even though he was the opening batter in Test matches by default. Alongside BJ Watling, he was also responsible for maintaining wickets during the test match against England.
Kept for New Zealand in the first test match at Lord’s, which was played after Watling suffered an injury. It is common for him to field in the slips or near the wicket when he is not in the role of a keeper. It was announced in January 2017 that Latham would be participating in the Chappell-Hadlee series as the wicket-keeper for New Zealand. He equaled New Zealand’s record of five dismissals as a wicketkeeper in an India One-Day International innings during the first one-day international of that series.
His poor performance with the bat, on the other hand, led to his dismissal on March 1 for the series against South Africa. With many regular players competing in the 2017 Indian Premier League, Latham was recalled and given the role of captain for the Ireland Tri-Series, which was played in Ireland against Ireland and Bangladesh. The series was played against Bangladesh. In October of 2017, Latham was assigned the responsibility of keeping wickets against India. As a result of his ability to play against spin, he was allowed to move down to the fifth position. During the first game of the three-match series, he scored 103 runs off of 102 balls.
